SSD for an Old School Laptop

Hi ozbargainers,

I've got an old school laptop DV6-2120TX and a DV6-1246TX.

Before I chuck them in the bin, I'd like to get some more life out of them in the form of an SSD.

Don't need a lot of space. 128GB would be enough.

More concerned with which brand. I have an Intel (I think it's a 525 or something like that) in my main PC and works well. That was a few years ago now and looks like plenty has changed in SSD land.

Which brands should I be looking at? Samsung? Sandisk? Intel?

Also, do I need this new M2 connection?

Your old school laptops won't need anything expensive. Since they run SATA2 ports, speed doesnt matter as the SSD will be bottlenecked by the interface anyway. Stick with well known brands like Crucial (BX100 series) Sandisk (Ultra II or PLUS series) or Samsung (850 non-Pro) series for the best bang for buck.

Intel is a great brand but alas their prices are usually slightly above average, mainly because they cater for business users, data centers and generally those lookng for reliability and performance consistency. Raw performance figures are generally not their focus, but they do produce very high end SSD's for the enthusiast market. But for your purpose you're going to want a keep-it-dirt-cheap solution.

M2 is a interface type used in the latest ultrabooks and desktops, this is a standard far too modern for any laptops not produced in the last 2 years to have.

I went with crucial bx100 because of the low power consumption which is something else to consider if youre upgrading your laptop hdd.

  • Thankyou scrimshaw and bangmango!

  • sandisk cheaper.
    samsung better.
you can pick up a sandisk from this site for about $50 odd

  • Before I chuck them in the bin,

Since when is a working i5 laptop something you chuck in the bin?

What a throw-away-society we have become.. if you don't want it, eBay it, if you don't want to pay for fees, Gumtree it, if you just can't be bothered selling it why don't you donate it? Even Intel Core Duo laptops have plenty of life left in them for people to use.

  • Ease up. It's a figure of speech. I was never going to actually throw it in the bin.

I actually have plans to use it as a plex server etc. But yes, donating would be nice, if I didn't have a use for it :)

  • $50 sounds fair for an SSD. I'll keep an eye out :)

Samsung 850 evo is very good, if not more than enough.

      • It'll fit straight into the laptop, right? I won't need an adapter or anything?

shouldn't need an adapter no, it will fit straight in

        • @andwae: Thanks mate

  • Guys and gals, stupid question.

I've upgraded the existing version of Windows 7 32bit on the hard drive to Windows 10 home 32 bit.

How do I get it to Windows 10 64 bit at the same time as changing to SSD?

Check Microsoft community forums.Saw something about that on there and they have a few MS Techs looking in at times.

      • All good dude. Long process in the end.
        You have to:
        1. Install Windows 7 on the new SSD
        2. Activate with existing product key
        3. Upgrade via windows update to Windows 10
        4. Clean install 64bit Windows 10

Painful but got there in the end.

        • No worries

  • If you can stomach 60GB (honestly I have no problems with it) then you can get them off Aliexpress for $35 delivered.

  • I ended up going for the Samsung Evo 250GB in the Futu sale.
