Canon Powershot A480 - $78 - Harvey Norman - This weekend only (Normally $149)

330

Harvey Norman stores are having a special on Canon Powershot A480 digital cameras (close to 50% off Harvey Norman's retail price). It is $78 each (only suppose to be for 30/01 to 31/01 - limit 2 per customer). Harvey Norman web site is still showing $78 (01/02 9AM). Cheapest on static ice for one of these is $108. A good deal for a small / spare camera.

Photo from the Preston store provided. However, you can find the deal on Harvey Norman web site. Here is the URL (for silver one):

I was really tempted getting one myself. However, I am the kind of person who really needs optical image stabilisation feature and this camera unfortunately does not have it.

It is also possible use OfficeWorks price beat policy (to get another 5% off).

  • Do you know if it's the same price in NSW? :)

    • I'd like to know this too…. i.e. is it just the Preston VIC store, or will other Harvey Norman stores price match it?

See the (NSW) Sunday Telegraph (31.1.10; p.18):
      Canon Clearout:
      PowerShot A480 10MP $78 (limit 2)
      Ixus 95IS 10MP $247
      Ixus 100IS 12.1MP $288
      Ixus 120 12.1MP $346
EOS 450D 12.2MP (twin IS lens kit) $1267

      • Ah, that's probably a sign a new model is around the corner to replace the A480. Still, a good bargain.

  • Great Price, would get it as a backup point and shoot if it didn't have AAs for power, Never getting a camera with AAs again, even rechargeables just aren't the same, have to get a Li-ion built in rechargeable pack.

    • i have an canon a640, awesomest camera from a few years back. it takes AAs (well four of them, so thats probably cheating), its rated at about 500 shots, or up to 1500, without the LCD on. From my experience, with 2700mah sony recharagble AAs, i more than smashed those totals by a few hundred, ran out of memory card space before the batteries actually drained. so thats a +1 to AAs from me.

      • I have a prosumer Canon using 4xAAs. My concern was being able to substitute alkaline AAs in a pinch. Sure I can get hundreds of shots on a charge, but the drawbacks compared with Li are I have to take along a separate, heavier charger, and NiMH cells are heavier than Li. In fact the camera itself is lighter than all the cells.

Maybe it doesn't matter if you don't backpack, but it does to me. Next time I will get a camera using Li and buy a spare pack; hang the cost of the Li pack, the weight is getting to me.

Anyway this is getting off-topic. For a snappy camera, you could even put in a couple of alkalines, so low is the consumption these days.

      • I've the same camera and using 4AA Eneloop batteries. The batteries can be left in the camera for a long time without need recharge. Like you said, it could take a lot of shots and run out of 2GB memory card before the batteries drained.

    • When I go on holidays I carry two cameras: a high quality DSLR, and a much smaller Canon that runs on AA batteries. Sometimes access to a suitable powerpoint for a few hours isn't available while traveling, but anyone can buy AA batteries anywhere. Both Li-ion and AA powered cameras have value.

  • Netsurfer - sorry I hope you dont miss out on your own bargain but according to canon this camera DOES have image stabilisation

    to quote canon USA

    3.3x Optical Zoom
The PowerShot A480 has a 3.3x optical zoom lens (35mm film equivalent 37-122mm) that makes everything up close and unforgettable, and an advanced Optical Image Stabilizer that puts a moving subject in sharp focus.

    • You sure? I checked a few reviews and nothing was said about image stabilisation, but there is something called motion detection. Presumably it detects fast objects and chooses a faster shutter speed.

It's a pretty basic camera but a great deal at that price. Great gift for first timers.

No optical image stabilizer. Otherwise, I would have bought it (see my original post comment). There is an error in some of the US ads I reckon (unless there is a special model in the US with a different lens - quite unlikely).

However, for this price, you cannot expect that feature anyway.

  • The Taylors Lakes HN also has the same sale, no price matching required. :) They had two silver ones left… well, one silver one left now! ;) I have been waiting for a decent sale for a while now, my old camera broke a few months ago.

Went into Officeworks and had them beat it by 5%. Used a printout from the HN website.

  • Does anyone know if it can be remote operated?

e.g. IR remote, or wired remote. i dont mean computer tethered operation.

Reason is i want to use two of them for 3D video/photo. so need the two to be synced.

Any recommendations other than this camera?

    Thanks OP!

  • Yep… officeworks ticket @ $118 - they did beat by 5% :}

  • pity this sale only went for a weekend

  • Still marked @ $78 @ H.N. Noosa:} think black only in box - others on display if thats good for u…
