    Allwinner CPU.
    Low resolution.
    Old Android OS.
    Low RAM.

    No deal.

    • +1

For $99, I don't know why you are whinging. 1GB is OK, and unlike many of the no-name cheapies, this one has a good display.

      • +5

I've wasted enough money on tablets to know rubbish is rubbish, regardless of how cheap it is.

Just like I've wasted enough money on a $900 iPad to know rubbish is rubbish, regardless of how expensive it is.

The sweet spot is in the middle.

        • +5

          What he said….,avoid this one

Especially when it comea to HP tablets they willbe forsakened in software updates…and lack of xda support will make you throw it away shortly

    • 1GB RAM on a tablet is low ram, oh ok.

      • +2

        1GB is terrible, yes.

        • Each to their own, personally i think that 1GB RAM on a tablet is acceptable. Fine for general use. It's not like it's a high end desktop PC.

      • +1

        Yep, consider yourself educated.

      • +3

1GB ram on any android device, KitKat and up, is infuriatingly laggy. One reason why they omitted the RAM from the specs list.

  • +2

For those interested, it appears that it may be possible to get root access on these:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/help/hp-8-g2-hp-8-14…

Not a lot in the way of custom roms around though.

Oh, and it isn't listed but this has 1GB Ram

  • +1

THe resolution kills it for me, if it was fullhd then its a good bargain

    • Same res as the original iPad. Probably the reason that one failed so badly.

      • Didn't Apple sell many original ipads?

        • +2

Haha, sorry too subtle for me.

      • yes, but in 2010 when the ipad was released, the newly branded "retina display" in the iphone 4 was a measly 960×640.

fast forward to now, and phones sporting 2560×1440…1024x768 on a tablet is not going to really cut it for a lot of people…

        not an apt comparison.

    • It's $99.

      What do you want?

      • +1

not this. if you've ever used this you'll know. At $99 it's extortion. $50 is about what you should pay for this.

        • Which one would you recommend for similar in price that isn't extortion?

I am considering replacing my old ASUS tablet and am curious what you could recommend

        • +1

@diddy50: Honestly, I've not seen anything recently on here. But budget tablets are less like budget phones. It's not like a phone where if you skimp on screen resolution on a small screen you might get away with it. Its deficiencies are somewhwat glorified at even this. If you prefer web browsing over app installability then the MemoPad 7 or Dell Venue 7 are much better choices. But I'm partial to doing simple things right, instead of being able to start something complex and not do it at all. You can generally find these second hand around the $150 mark. I got a Dell Venue 7 for $130 for my uncle and he's very happy with it but he only uses it for mail and Online banking. Personally, HP has skimped on too much on this particular one for it to be of any use to most people.

  • The chip costs $4 ☺

  • +1

Spend the $100 ebay voucher on? :)

  • Anyone play around with this one?
Basically want it as a replacement tablet for my mom as shes still using her hp touchpad from 2011-2012. Basically needs to solitaire, ridiculous fishing, and a few other games. Is there any way to figure out compatibility with apps yet other then buying it and hoping for the best?
Also does it come pre-loaded with telstra apps? How about a physical telstra branding on the outside?

    • +1

This one should do the job.

      • +1

Cheers specs look like they'd be up to the job I was just concerned about bloat ware/branding, and compatibility. Do you happen to have one by any chance?

        • +3

I have two. No big deal about bloatware. It's android kitkat. So pretty decent.

It's basic and works. Good price

        • @diddy50:
cheers ordered one then. Hopefully any issues can be solved with rooting heh.

    • +1

My wife uses this as an e-book reader, basic web surf/Facebook & couple of light games. Does the job just fine.

      • Excellent sounds like it fits the ticket then. Very reassuring thanks!

I bought two of these refurbished for 82$ a few weeks back for Christmas for the kids.

It's a pretty good tablet for the price.

So it doesn't have marshmallow. It plays almost everything normal for kids.

    It has Netflix Iview etc.

The screen is fine as well.

    It's also not a 600$ tablet. It's only 99$!

    • +5

People expect FHD and 2GB RAM for $99 nowadays.

      • +2

Well considering I got very similar specs to this for $40 from target (and it runs brilliantly), yeah, I would expect a whole lot better for $99
Basically, they're charging a $60 premium for the HP brand

  • 16 GB tablet should be banned these days. After some system updates, App install, taking a little bit of video/photo, these are quickly unusable. Don't get fool about the expandable memory (SD slot etc), not many thing can make use of that.

    • +1

not many thing can make use of that.-quote

Hence the rooting mentioned above ;)

  • Looking at this, it's incredibly similar to the Netgreen target tablet from the other day. Which I bought.
It comes with the same processor, similar species cameras (aka terrible).
The differences are, this only comes with 1gb of ram, the $40 target one comes with 2gb. This has an 8" screen as opposed to 7". And a slightly better resolution (most of which would be lost with the larger screen area).

For $40, the Netgreen tablet is great. For $100, I'd have to say definitely not.

    • Just did the calculation, this resolution actually produces a slightly lower ppi count, because of the larger screen. 160ppi vs 169 for the Netgreen

    • I'm interested in the Target tablet can you still purchase them at that price? Also does it have an IPS screen?

      • +1

I made a mistake. It's only 1gb, same as this one. Still a good tablet
Sadly not, it's a TN screen. Which is probably it's biggest flaw, alongside the battery.
I imagine you could, so long as you can find stock. Because it's a discontinued model.

  • +1

chuwi vi8 or hi8, is a much better option for $25 more.

  • +1

Thanks Trickypie, I just bought it. Been looking for a while. Excellent bargain!

  • +2

Somebody just bought 30 of them

    • +1

Probably an online seller. There's no other reason that you'd buy that many of them.

      • +1
