PC Build Check for Newbie

Hey everyone. Looking to build my first PC this summer, ideally for gaming and being budget friendly <$2000AUD, cheaper would be better; I've been looking at PCpartpicker:

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/2qX8Vn
http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/ZZQpTW

Any comment/suggestions, or any obvious "won't work"s? Would you guys know if these all fit inside the NZXT S340?

Any suggestions to decrease the cost would be nice. Or whereabouts I should purchase these from, to be cheaper.
Currently it's around $2100 $1820 delivered, if i'm to buy all parts from http://www.pccasegear.com/.

  • $200 on liquid cooling is pretty overkill. Why do you need it?

    • Wouldn't it keep the CPU running at lower temperatures/ overall less noise? Noise and heat don't sound too good.

Air cooling will be absolutely fine. Get a decent, cheaper fan like this and put the rest of the money towards a better GPU.

I would rethink that motherboard choice as well. $270 is a lot to pay for a micro ATX motherboard with nothing to distinguish itself from the pack.

        • agree
IMO Cm hyper best bang for buck passive

Liquid cooling has been found to be almost equivalent to a good fan cooler in most cases. It particularly is not needed by this CPU

  • do you plan to overclock at all?

  • will it fit…
dont know the graphics card length but would say …most likely yes

videos everywhere if you aint 100% sure just start googling

    • 308mm, looks like it will fit.
      Any opinions about the build?

this is definitely not a bang for buck build
i would say its slightly upper medium

i would ditch the kraken and just stick to a passive CPU cooler like the CM hyper
your PSU is probably overkill unless you plan to Crossfire later…there is a price for expand-ability

mb - dont know it…looks on the higher end of specs (and price)…if you want to spend the extra that's up to you
i paid slightly more for my MB when i upgraded for slightly better sound…in hindsight i've got shitty little speakers so it wasnt worth it

your comp is well beyond single screen 1080p
what monitor/res do you plan to play at?

  • With regards to air vs liquid cooling, liquid isn't automatically better.

Liquid tends to run cooler at load by 5-10°C which would give you more overclocking headroom but most of the time liquid is actually noisier and, anecdotally, it would only give you an extra 100-200mHz at the expense of increased power draw, heat and noise. Check out some reviews: 1, 2 and there are lots of others that say similar things

As long as you don't get really unlucky in the silicon draw you'll be able to OC to 4.4-4.5GHz pretty easily just on air.

I would second others in the thread and recommend a good air cooler instead. With the $100 or more you save you can get a few goodies or put it towards other components :D

Modified it a bit for you,

    http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/xJzJLk

You'd rather go with a 6700K with a slightly worse cooler than a 6600K with liquid cooling. The 212X is a great cooler, you'll probably get like 200-300 MHz more with a liquid cooler on OCs and it's not worth it.

Changed motherboard - better to get an ATX board for an ATX case, you get better expansion options and it's generally less cramped and easier to build with. Cheaper as well. No need to spend plenty of money on your board.

Changed the GPU to a GTX970, better GPU for the money compared to the 390. The 390 performs only ever so slightly better than the 290X, which is worse than a 780 Ti and the 970 is slightly better than the 780 Ti. Uses less power as well. The 390 does have more VRAM, but unless you're running CF or SLI, I can't imagine needing that much VRAM. The 970 is a better card for the same money right now.

Changed the PSU to a 80+ Bronze unit, no need to go for an 80+ Gold. I did the calculations once and I don't know where I put them, so you'll have to take my word, that for an average user, an 80+ Gold unit won't pay for itself over the life of the unit, i.e. you're paying more for the gold PSU than you'll make back through energy savings. Realistically, Gold is like 10% better than Bronze. Most of the time your PC will be at idle, drawing a max of 100W, so you're only 10W better off, you save more energy by turning off an unused light.

    • Some good advice thanks.

I'd replaced the liquid cooling to a CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler, a few more bucks than the 212X, some say its better, and it looks beast. I'll stick to i5, keep it budget friendly, i don't think i'd really need to overclock, but i'll be able to if i want to in the future. Gaming should be fine, right? But i get what you were saying with the i7 and fan, vs, overclocked i5 with liquid.
I had someone else say similar about the motherboard, so i've changed that in my other build list too, definitely cheaper.

The GPU was something i was having issues deciding on, and someone on reddit said to just go with the 390. I did a bit of reading, and as i'll only be playing at 1080p, you may be right about the 970 being better option for now. The price point was similar for both cards. One thing i did note was you picked a 970 FTW edition, as opposed to cheaper 970 GPU models, whats the difference?

And thanks for the input on PSU. I change that also. Cheers.

      How's this looking?: Definitely cheaper.
Will probably end up being $1850 delivered if bought at full price, which isn't too bad

      • I noticed the motherboard you picked was cheaper too,
        so

        http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/ZZQpTW

I wasn't sure at first so picked one that had a high user rating on pcpartpicker. They should all be similar?

And what i meant with FTW, is will it heat more? as apposed to just SC or OC or even standard

Yep, sounds good, they're all basically the same anyway.

If you don't want to overclock, there's also the option of going with a Xeon E3 model, it has hyperthreading for the price of an i5 (not sure if the Skylake ones are out yet).

I did a bit of reading, and as i'll only be playing at 1080p, you may be right about the 970 being better option for now.

The 970 is definitely the better card, no doubt about it - the only thing the 390 has going for it is the extra VRAM (which you won't need). The 390 is definitely overpriced for what it is. The thing is, the 390 performs pretty similarly to a 290X, which you can find for like $300 on Gumtree and easily bargain to like $270 or thereabouts.

One thing i did note was you picked a 970 FTW edition, as opposed to cheaper 970 GPU models, whats the difference?

Slight overclock for not too much money, assuming it'll have better binning so that you'll be able to get furtuer OCs in future as well.

  • I'd upgrade the card to a Fury or Fury X, motherboard so expensive, liquid cooling the CPU is too much, plus the pricing on new tech is a tad high atm too

a lot more juice for the top games for your dollar at this moment in time, there's a trend towards the top title games utilising CPU cores, also if you're only playing at 1080p then you could snag a HD7970 or gtx 770 that will do the job just fine
