  • How does the warranty work if buying from Amazon? International warranty?

I have had a WD HDD fail on me from Amazon, they sent me a replacement for free express shipped and paid for the shipping of the faulty one back to Amazon. Was pretty happy with the outcome.

  • hot price or bad price? :P

  • I don't like it that WD portable HDs can't be removed from their enclosures.

    • How about Seagate or Toshiba?

      • I think they're OK.

        • It's not possible with Toshiba any more.

  • Two simple rules in life..

    1) never flash your computer bios in windows
    2) never buy western digital portable hard drives, because the usb interface is physically on the drive.. (in order ot decrease costs and size of the drive( It anything happens to the drive / data, you cannot remove the drive from the enclosure and expect to get it working in another computer..

Failure of the usb interface is recognised issue amongst external drives…

I'm pretty much prepared to pay a premium for a portable unit that can be dismantled… pretty much all the seagates, I've come across so far are fine…

    • Dare I ask, but why not flash your BIOS in Windows? Never had an issue.

      • 1) Long ago when I bought a new PC, I mananged to screw up a BIOS upgrade (and I don't know how). Shipped the BIOS chip to vendor and they shipped it back and it was still not working. Luckily a friend had a contact in a shop and did a swappy for me. Since then I bought dual BIOS MBs.
        2) My WD drive started failing and they sent me an equivalent BUT USB 3 version. How nice!

  • Do portable enclosures fail very often?
I know the desktop ones do but they have more things that can fail.

  • My 2TB WD Elements died yesterday after a 10 cm drop to the floor. I'm contemplating suicide. My whole life was on this thing and it's lost and un-rescuable.
