Grinders Roasted Beans 1kg Coffee $21 @ Coles

50

I've tried a few freshly roasted beans but for some reason I like Grinders the best, they are on special @ Coles for $21 this week.

  • How much do they normally sell them for?

    • click on the link and look

      • Not everyone has internet access…

    Lavazza is only $15 in the same special.

    Personally I prefer it, but given this is supermarket coffee the key determinate is probably when it was roasted and how stale it is.

    Grinders is owned/mass produced by Coca Cola. I would suggest looking at some of the 2kg deals Sweet Yarra Coffee or Manna Beans post here. Not much of a price difference but a huge step up in freshness & quality.

    • Agree - and this is what I do. But there is still a fair price differential. In each case you need to have access to a decent grinder.

      For what it is worth, I've been quite impressed with some of the Grinders blends available in small packages on supermarket shelves - good quality for when you have to buy pre-ground. Not sure what quality the coffee is in this offer when compared with those smaller pre-ground packets.

  • When was it roasted and how stale is it?

    • this is quite difficult to quantify. There is a use by/best before date, but each large roasting company selling beans through supermarkets probably keeps the roast date secret, because they can. You can't even count backwards from the use by date (like you can with eggs to find the laying date).

      The stale factor is correlated to the expiry date, but can truly only be tested by taste. For these reasons, it really is best to go with sellers who are far more transparent with roasting dates.

        Emailed a few companies once to try and find out how long from roast date to "Best before". I got a few replies, as per below, for what its worth.

        Grinders = 24mths
        Harris = 12mths
        Republica = 24mths
        Vittoria/Aurora (Same Company) = 12mths

        I have managed to get down to a week from roasting date, but often find some over a year!

        • Forgot to mention this is for whole beans, not ground.

        • I think Lavazza are 24mths.

    Manna Beans for me!

    Lots of different tastes, and freshly roasted.

    Super quick delivery, too.

    Grinders Coffee Beans - "Romanza" (Dark Esspresso) $5.99/kg at NQR this week! Expiry date 04/17

  • Caffe aurora Italian blend for approx $13 when on sale at woolworths is worth a try for milky espresso based drinks. Can make a drink better than your average cafe, and I'd also argue better than many fresh roasts.

  • I've had Manna and some others but for some reason I like the Grinders, everyone has a different taste.

    This post needs a trigger warning

    • I assume you're alluding to the freshly baked bread debacle, but in actual fact, most of the time the grinders coffee I've come accross has been pretty close to still having the 2 years before use-by.

  • Grinders beans are pretty good, though hunt around and get 1kg a a better price.
