[Resolved] Bankwest - How owing .29c quickly turned into $1200 without even knowing!!

Hi guys,

So it goes a little like this. I’ve had a Bankwest Qantas Platinum Mastercard for a few years. I make sure I pay off any purchases each fortnight, and with some weeks the account goes into credit.A couple of days ago I was charged .29 cents. I considered calling to enquire about the charge (and felt a bit silly over the small amount!) but in the end did. Luckily I did though. This afternoon I was told that it was due to a cash advance I made… nearly 3 years ago and that I owe $1200!!

If I have made purchases or withdrawn funds, I know I need to pay those off but this seems like they try and hide these amounts from consumers. So here are a couple of things I don’t understand:

  • How is it legal that if you pay off your credit card, these amounts aren’t payed off?
  • I was told the only way consumers find out the total amount the ‘truly’ owe on their card is if they contact the bank and then not use the card until the next statement. Why are consumers forced to contact the bank before these fees/charges/interest is payed off? Why doesn’t the bank contact them? Why isn’t there a limit that once it gets hit, the bank is required to contact the consumer to inform them?

I think this is really misleading and I asked the bank’s rep what other people do and she said they just pay it off when they close the account. I can imagine there’s lots of people walking around not knowing they owe these amounts. I mean, when do people close their account if they’re seemingly happy with it?!?

Anyway, is there anything I can do about this? Is there any way I can tell other people about this so it doesn’t happen to them? Hubby and I are trying to buy our first house atm and I can’t imagine having an even bigger bill that we didn’t know about and it affecting our credit rating!

Thanks for your help/advice.

Wouldn't the cash advance show up on your monthly statement?

Ive just had almost the same thing. My card got hacked in April and $3000 stolen from ATMs across Bangkok. I'm now, 6 months later, incurring cash advance fees for the stolen money! Lol. The bank refunded the stolen money, but nothing to stop the fees and charges associated with it. Go figure…

  • Im not sure I read that correctly, is the bank saying you took a cash advance 3 years ago of $1200 and they didn't notice?

They didnt charge you 3 years of interest on the cash advance did they?

I would say that you just pay back the initial cash advance as that is what you borrowed from them all those years ago.

Normally people depend on their statements being accurate in order to keep their finances in order, you could argue for a concession citing this and maybe get the current year fee for your credit card waived?

Thx for the posts, guys. So I’ve just phoned Bankwest to try and work out a payment process. Another rep said that the charge related to a cash advance for Oct 2015 (I know, I’m embarrassed to even utter a CA on OZ – let’s just say we’re moving money short term for an application).

The amount of $1200 comes from the TOTAL PAYOUT for the card, right now. I knew of this current balance, so it’s all good. The rep didn’t apologise but said that the previous person gave me the wrong advice.. phew

    • Then please change the post title, description and request the mods remove this post. You are making out like Bankwest are theiving when it was entirely your mistake.

  • The card balance and the final payment are different things. For example, I pay off my card balance mid month. Because interest is charged monthly (although it is calculated daily) does not appear until the end of that cycle.

That could explain the 0.29 cents. Bit unclear on the $1200

  • Oh dear. So it was a mistake. Nothing.

Can we close and delete this post then? Just wasted everybody's time
