How Much Have You Saved with OzBargain?

Out of curiosity… How much do you think you have saved thanks to the site?

On my end I owe ozbargain, that I've been browsing since May, most of my electronics, laptop, speakers and phone, some clothes and cheap diners… Maybe around 500$?

Pretty sweet! :)

I saved more than $2000 on the last lot of air fares I bought, so I can't even guess.
The question is, if you spend $750 on a Macbook Air discounted from $1200, but would have bought a $600 windows laptop otherwise, is it a saving or did OzBargain cost men $150?

    • Yes, life's difficult questions are hard to answer, isn't it? There is always the temptation to "upbuy"(for the lack of a better word) something based on your scenario of if you are already looking for laptops and narrowing it down to paying $600 for a Acer/HP/Toshiba/Asus laptop, why not pay another $150 and get a Macbook Air.

    • Yeah, I usually see it on the brighter side and think I saved money, makes me feel less guilty..

is it a saving or did OzBargain cost men $150?

There are OzBargainettes too you know

      • Sorry, typo - "cost me $150"

It hard to say, while there are some genuine savings and some that are epic savings, I find that I am buying stuff that I don't really need or stuff that I normally would not buy or know about. Perfect example is this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208164

I think I am getting better at resisting buying stuff just because they are cheap though. Like this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/220350 or this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/220305

I don't think this site has saves people money as much as it enables people to afford things they wouldn't be able to otherwise.

I agree with you. Accidentally downvoted you, oops!

      • All good mate, +- doesn't mean much to me, personally.

  • A lot of times I wasn't considering going on holiday and then I see 2 for 1 tickets to Japan from jetstar and I buy them without even thinking so can I consider that ozbargain saving me money or spending my money?

    I've saved thousands.
    PC/ bike/ ps3/ woolies stackable codes - quilton, seafood, beer/ flights/ accomodation/ countless ebay promos/ Masters and Bunnings price wars/ Amex promotions.
The follow on effect means I can spend the money I saved on other things.

I also read the comments/ forum topics gaining great tips.

No one saved anything in OzB. We are spending to save. The initial spending is the real problem because we don't actually need these stuff! Since I have joined early this year I have bought 3 watches, 2 USB flash drives, a pair of shoes and a load of beef jerky. I wouldn't have bought them or cheaper substitutes had I not joined OzB.

If you use OzB only to buy stuff you always intended buying / regular essentials such groceries, shoes, clothing, then you can save money. But as others have said OzB can also tempt you to buy things you don't need or didn't intend buying. Discipline is the key otherwise it's not a bargain.

  • Ozbargain has saved me so far -$7563.

    With all the impulse buys….

  • I have a love/hate relationship with this site, I see a deal and because it's a good deal I buy it and I don't even need it or was even in the market for it in the first place…
    I know I'm a sucker :(

  • ~$200 I guess.
I buy more than I normally would with OzB.

Like earbuds. Mine die on a regular basis but when JBHifi had a clearance on them, I stocked up and bought 3 pairs. Ordinarily I'd just pick up a new set after my old ones are dead but now I have a several boxes and that tends to apply for other consumables that show up on the site, like toilet paper and batteries.

  • OzBargain saved me hundreds of driving hours as well as dollars on fuel/parking/depreciation. I used to drive a lot between suburbs in hopes of snagging a clearance special on electronic goods (eg. JB HiFi, Harvey Norman, Domayne, Good Guys, DickSmith, Teds camera house, Binglee, Myers, David Jones, OfficeWorks, Kmart, Big W, EB Games, WOW Sight and Sound, Allens, Retravision, Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, IGA, various HiFi stores…)

Many OzBargainers are considerate and will comment about the stock levels and which stores have no stock.

In the 4 years of being an OzBargain member the bargains have saved me THOUSANDS of $$$.

Hundreds saved on each of the following:
    - Overseas airfare
    - Telstra mobile phone plan
    - several mobile phone handsets
    - Pentax Digital SLR camera
    - Playstation 3
    - PS3 Steering wheel
    - PS3 games (usually $5-$10 max spend)
    - External computer storage (SDHC, MicroSD, 2TB Portable Drives)
    - 5% tap-and-go Visa paywave (ING Direct, Members Equity bank).

The main criticism of OzBargain is that no-name brand items never make it onto the front page. eg. KMart, Target, Action sports cameras from China, Hyundai cars, Huawei mobile phones. For some reason most OzBargainers are still suckers to the marketing industry and pay good money for that extra sticker/label.
