I thought these butane burners are banned. Just bought one. Thank you.

    • Yeah there was a mass recall for these as they can explode.

      • +4

These ones comply with standard AS 2658-2008. The ones that were recalled didn't.

        • Yeah was specific models although the majority had been recalled good to know these are fine I have been using mine with no issues.

    • +1

A while ago a rep told me they would be coming back and now they are back. Anaconda are selling there original models again also.

    • Banned/recalled because they didn't have some kind of pressure safety valve and in some scenarios heat could be reflected to the gas can. So maybe these have fixed those issues.

      • Yes, all new models. Other stores have nee ones as well now.

  • Thanks for this

    I don't know why I needed a Dual Burner Butane Stove… but I did.

    • Trying to justify it right now myself! Only need the single one…but it's only $5 more!

    • +1

Yeah I was originally looking for a single burner too but I found the dual one easy to justify.

Cooking pasta on one side and a sauce or vegies on the other. Eggs on one, bacon on the other etc etc.

Plus if you're only using one side and the canister runs out, quickly swap to the other side while you go find the other canisters that you forgot where you put.

  • Good price for a dual. Kmart has singles for $20.

  • I don't need one of these but I have the remains of a SCA gift card to use up by January

    Decisions, decisions!

  • Thanks OP just ordered to collect. Good price for dual burner.

  • Thanks OP. Just in time for the camping trip next month. Had a single one already, but now don't have to wait for chops to be ready before moving onto the pasta :)

Picked up last one from SCA Ashmore, QLD.

  • Were all of them recalled?
What happens if you have one that's been recalled.?
I have the one from bunnings, bought 2 years ago……

    • None of them were recalled, they just became illegal to sell. At least in NSW anyway.

      • So are they still ok to use then?

Seems odd, tIhat if they too dangerous to sell, but ok to use?

        • Have a read of this link here http://www.elgas.com.au/blog/1419-nsw-bans-portable-butane-s…

Kinda says recalled, but not recalled lol.

I think at the end of the day they were just banned for sale.

We threw ours out, they are cheap enough to buy a new one. Would prefer to do that than cop a canister in the side of the head :-)

  • Not available in WA, not sure why as I've seen the single one's pop back up after they were banned.

  • +1

Can't seem to find a store in NSW? Anyone else?

  • +1

The reason that they were banned in SA I believe is because when a large pan like a frypan is placed on the burner the side of the pan encroaches over the metal cover that houses the butane cylinder. Flames and heat then follow around the sides of the frypan. The cover over the butane cylinder becomes extremely hot and passes this heat through to the gas cylinder which may explode it it gets hot enough! The metal cover also has a hole in it which allows heat to go into the housing of the gas cylinder. I personally wouldn't use one anymore. The risks may be small but the results of a canister exploding can be massive!

But these new ones have a pressure safety cut-off system and the gas cans all now appear to be the crv safety type. So where is the danger?

    • I thought the one that blew up was because someone put those hot rocks on the burner and then the saucepan on top.

Thought someone else might find this useful…

I have a Coleman dual-burner camp stove. Recently I purchased a fitting so I can run it from standard 8.5kg BBQ gas bottles. But I was thinking about getting one of these, because it's a bit smaller, weighs less, gas obviously weighs a lot less than an 8.5kg BBQ bottle.

So since it's cheap right now, I figured this was the time. But then I did some calculating…

On the same site gas cartridges are $4.88 for 4x 220g cans. That works out to $5.55 per kg, or, $47.14 for 8.5kg (which is the size of a standard BBQ gas bottle). I think 8.5kg refills are about $30 at Bunnings. But I see refills at garages for about $18.

Yes, I know - people will say, "But this is a lot lighter." I thought the same. But… You have to carry at least 2x cartridges (in case one runs out). And let's ignore the fact most people will carry the entire four anyway (or 880g). Assume you only carry two. That's 440g…

Now if I stay with the Coleman/Gasmate instead, and got a 4kg or even the smaller 2kg gas bottle… Compared to 2x 440g cans that's only 1.5kg heavier.

As previously mentioned, it costs $47 - $30 ($17 cheaper) to refill at Bunnings. But because the 2kg is smaller than an 8.5kg bottle, the per kg price for gas probably goes up. So maybe it matches, or is even more expensive than the cans. But Bunnings is the most expensive place to refill now.

So if you took the 2kg bottle to a place that refills your bottle (instead of swapping it), even allowing for paying more to fill a smaller 2kg bottle - it would have to cost less than $47/kg!

So you'd quickly make back the extra cost of having to buy the 2kg bottle, by refilling it. And get a better-built stove into the bargain. And create less landfill from all those empty cans.

    (FWIW.)

    • Thanks for that mate top post :)

    • All good, but your coleman dual-burner must have been $150+, compared to $35 for this? Lol :)

      • Dunno - it might have been, if I hadn't got it for free on the side of the road in a council cleanup. ;-)

Knocked on door, spoke to owner - nope, nothing wrong with it - works fine. Lady was only tossing it because she was moving and couldn't be bothered taking it with her.

Had half a bottle of gas.
Got a wire stand for it later off Freecycle for free too.

Besides, you'd soon make up that price difference saving on gas too. Or you could visit garage sales. Or Freecyle. Or… (etc.) :-)

  • Cheers OP :)
