$1 for $11 Donation to Starlight Children’s Foundation @ Scoopon ($0.34 after CashRewards Cashback)

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Using promo code VISA10 and VisaCheckout at Scoopon, we can donate $11 to the Starlight Foundation for basically nothing!

Put 11 x $1 donations into your cart. Apply VISA10 code to reduce your payment to $1.

If using CashRewards with 6% cashback, your net cost is $0.34 to donate $11! (66 cents cashback)

After tax, your net cost is zero!

All donations over $2 are tax deductible so after tax, you'll actually make a profit! (The amount depends on your tax rate. But say for example you're in the 19% tax rate, and you claim $11 deduction for for the donation, you'll get $2.09 back but you've only paid $1 or 34 cents, so you've made money!) The point really isn't to make a profit but to use this opportunity to donate money to a great foundation basically for free!

I used VISA10 a few times to grab some bargains, and when I saw this I just had to create another account to make the donation. I know we all get tired of being asked to donate, but this time just think of it as a few minutes work to make Visa make the donation!! I hope you'll all get on board!

*This is my first ever deal post. Sorry if I've broken 100 rules. But my intentions are good =)

I like supporting a good cause especially if the money comes from big corporations like Visa.

  • if you only paid $1 I don't think its wise to claim $11 on tax

    • It is an interesting situation but the official tax invoice from the Starlight Foundation will be sent in 2016 (according to the site) so I would just claim whatever the official receipt says.

Either way, can't go wrong with 40 cents to $1!

      • +1

The bank deduction amount needs to match the receipt amount, if they audit you they'll check these things.

        • +1

I don't really wanna get into a detailed conversation about this because the deduction is not really the point. It's more that for 34 cents we can make a $11 donation.

However, for the benefit of other people, who should make their choice themselves, I will say that I work in tax and I will be claiming whatever is on the official receipt.

        • it is whoever is on the invoice.

the money can come from wherever, the person claiming needs to be on the invoice. and you can only claim the invoice amount.

        • @thydzik:

No it's not, it's what came out of your bank. Visa claim the the $10,you claim the $1. Otherwise I could write plenty of invoices for any amount I want - who would be to say otherwise?

        • @DrStinge:

If the full amount is made out to the purchaser, the purchaser can claim the full amount.

if I give a $10 cash donation to a charity, it doesn't matter where I got the $10 from, it is whose name is on the receipt.

writing plenty of invoices for any amount is fraud…

        • @thydzik:

The logic make sense but I can't find actual examples. The ATO website says otherwise, may be a result of my googling. Can you find any evidence to support?

Eg "You cannot claim a deduction for an expense to the extent that: someone else paid the expense"

Not being a spoil sport, but do often wonder Just how much of the donation actually makes it on the ground to the kids/people in need, after the CEOs salaries, administration costs, other sundries, and wonder whats left to actually do any good.

    • I think its about 60% admin costs and 40% actually goes to the needy

      • +3

according to the Starlight foundations 2013 annual report they raised $25,955,000. employee expenses was $10,499,000 (40%), my accounting skills are so rusty (Diploma of Accounting 1993) that I have no idea how to read balance sheets, P&L statements, etc

    • +1

The true test of effectiveness for any group like this is how much difference they actually make, not what proportion of revenue is spent on admin/projects. For most group it's vital that they spend money on things like admin and staff costs because it helps to ensure that their projects are as valuable as possible.

Hhmm, not sure why this was moved to the forum? (I don't know the rules) Hope it still gets good exposure!

    • Deal Posting Guidelines. Help is available at the bottom of all pages. Thanks for posting!

      • +4

        Disagree with that guideline 100%.

  • cashback is 6 cents only. still a good "deal" though.

    • Nah 6% of $10 (i initially calculated on GST exclusive amount) is 60 cents.

But my cashrewards email came through with 66 cents credit. So even better!

      • got my CR email with 66 cents too! didn't realise they were paying back on sale value!

    Done. Thanks for posting.

  • Would it be $1=$22 because government matches donation $1 to a $1.

Merged from $1 Donation - Grant a Starlight Wish

Hi guys, this is my first post, not sure if this is allowed, but worth a shot. I think this could be a real "bargain" for donation. For those who haven't use your visa checkout $10 code for Scoopon, may be you can just buy 11 of this $1 deal for donation, which comes to a total of $11 and with the VISA10 coupon code using payment method visa checkout, you pay/donate just $1, but in total the foundation receive $11. So, this is a bargain too right?

I like this. Great first post

You serious? Donate 1 buck of your own money and the charity gets $11 and you're whinging about it? That's low man.

        • low blow? Hell no

    • +1

If they provide a receipt you may get up to $4.50 back in your tax and when you redonate that they get $15+

        Hi TB.

Great idea and yes they do :-)

All donations over $2 are tax deductible

      • +1

Great idea with the tax refund. In fact, we can do that recursively.
It is basically a geometry series:

        y = (10 + x) / (1 - i)
        where
y = Amount received by Starlight
x = the amount that comes out of your pocket
        i = the tax rate

        E.g
If tax rate is .45 and we buy 20 dollar donation, 9 dollar is from tax, 10 is from visa, 1 is from you.

Hi moonster. This was posted last night then moved to forums…

Hopefully it'll stay here this time, needs more exposure. One of the best charitable bargains ever posted.

        • +1

Absolutely laughable that this gets buried in the forums where nobody will see it, and yet there will be a zillion deals posted by store reps this weekend, and nearly all of them will garner 1 vote….from themselves.

  • this is really good

  • Damn, I only have Mastercard and AMEX, anyway to help support this?

    • +2

You pay using your visa checkout account. I use my mastercard on my visa checkout account

      • Cheers, will create one now. Never used it before XD

  • +1

Thanks for this, too bad it isn't in deals page where I would have gotten more exposure.
If you think of it you "receive" at least $1 when you do your tax return next year so technically it is a deal!! :)

  • Out of interest, I wonder how much Visa loses and how much Scoopon loses from the $10.

  • +1

received my donation receipt with the full amount.
