  • spoken to two "panel beater" today - both are descent. one booked out till Jan.
Are you north, south, west or east or city? Sydney is so big.
Was there any dent? Is it touch up or paint the whole bumper?
How expensive is your vehicle? Does it need to be perfect?
    Options:
    1. Touch up paint $15 a can in Autoone - read the colour code from your owner's manual.
    2. $50 for a can of touch up paint can be mixed for you by your friendly panel beater.
    3. Scratch can get away by buffering - under $200.
    4. Paint the bumper bar $400 + or -….I think, could be wrong.

  • Hi eatwell365. Thankyou for your reply. I live in south/east of Sydney. Its a 2003 toyota camry. There is no dent but the color on the bumper are chipped out. All black. I have remove the scratch marks but the color is chipped out thats why it needs a touch up. Buffering is expensive.

    • +1

Bumpers are easy. Sand your chips flat. Mask up your bumper where it joins. Get a spray can done up in your colour and some clear and spray away.

Or… spray a couple of light coats of black where its chipped, clear it, give it a polish and see how it looks after that.

The thing about black is it's easy to colour match and blend in…usually….

    • agree with escimojo DIY. Camry is not uncommon, so should be able to get color easily. Found the spray can is easier than touch up paint brush. Show car club membership eg NRMA to get few percent discount. Watch YouTube clip or follow instruction above. If don't bother too much, simply spray colour on top. I would spray light coat (which means very light coat one at a time) over a week. It is always temptation to spray more and finish quickly. Leave the can next to the car in garage. Every time you start press once over the area at distance like 33 mm. Leave the can. Do again on another day. It will be good. If spray too much, not smooth.
No expert but from experience. I can be wrong.

    • You could try what I did and get some paint made up at Autobarn and try fixing it yourself. Good experience. If all else fails, take it to a pro.

  • I have a same problem but the car is dark grey metalic.
    Good advice about autoone!

Looked on youtube and they used putty to fill in the paint chip first and then they painted it.

    What's your experience?

Would I need to apply clear coat after I paint it?

What is the best way to dry it?

The car is only 1 year old.

    Thank you.

    • I got a chip on the bumper when kids scooter fell out while opening the boot. Car is pearl white, unlike metallic paints, it requires ground coat, pearl coat and clear coat. Went to Autobarn after taking a photo of the car plate on the passenger side door, which contained the colour code. Got 3 spray cans, shook it really well for 5 minutes each. Sprayed the paint into the cap, then mixed it with a fine brush. Brushed it on, and waited 15 minutes before the next coat. I gave it two coats of each paint. The colour matched perfectly, didn't even need to sand it. Don't worry about putty, just fill the chip with enough of the metalic paint so that there is a slight bump. The paint will dry and kind of level out with the rest of the paint. Then put couple of thin coats of clear. If you want you can get some rubbing compound to make it even flatter. For small chips say less than 5mm diameter, it isn't worth sanding. You will end up making the job bigger, and more noticeable.

      • Thank you for this. I got the touchup paint with built-in brush from autoone.
Put it on. Didn't like the result, took it off with alcohol and put it on again.
Still was bad. Then I desided to sand it off too smooth the area more and brusshed it back on again which made it worse.
The trace from the brush is too visible, the colour is slightly off and it's not glossy.

I am thinking of sanding it off, spray paint it and then spray with clear coat.

Please let me know your thoughts.

        • It depends on how big the chip is. I dont like the touch up paints that come in a bottle with a brush. They are much thicker than spray can paint. If the chp is more than 10mm diameter I would mask the areas around it and spray it. Build it up until you are almost flush with the rest of the paint. Do this in multiple coats. Wait 5 to 10 min between coats. Then wet sand to smooth out the edges. The 3 coats of clear. Then wet sand until it is flush and smooth with the rest of the paint. Them get some rubbing compound and buff out the fine scratches. Then wax. I find less is more when it comes to touching up scratches. It is almost impossible to match the colour exactly, so keeping the area to be painted to a minimal is a must. Unless you are a professional I wouldnt try to try and blend in the paint.

        • Thank you!

What kind of sanding paper do you use for wet sanding?

Can I dry the paint with a hair dryer?

  • How durable are those rattle can clear coats?
