6TB HGST NAS Hard Drive $351 AUD Shipped from Newegg

180

Good price for a 6TB drive from pretty much the only hard drive manufacturer I trust these days.

$50 cheaper than the best price on static ice

The price is $320 + $30.97 shipping. Get 2 drives and shipping is $43.81.

Get 3 drives and pay GST - so don't do that.

2.65% cashback for newegg at topcashback also (don't think the $10 referral bonus is running at the moment sadly).

Really, really good NAS HDDs right there.
I've got two of the 4TB models myself. If you don't need 6TB drives, get yourself the 4TB models from MSY for $245. Cheapest price by miles.

The Deskstar NAS HDDs have rotational vibration sensors, 1 million hour MBTFs and despite having 7200RPM spindle speeds, my two Desktar NAS HDDs are quieter than other 5400RPM drives and hit 34C at the hottest.

The TLER/CCTL time-out delay is also configurable via Smartmontools; these are true enterprise-class HDDs (unlike the WD Reds) that are around $60-80 dollars cheaper than the equivalent-sized variants of the WD RE/SE, HGST UltraStar or Seagate Enterprise series.

See why are useful comments like these so hard to come by nowadays.
Every deal is filled with memes and self-referenced nonsense.

I already had my NAS specs/setup planned out and this has completely changed my mind.
My setup was going to be 3 x WD Red 4tbs (for NAS 2.0), but given this feedback I will be looking to purchase a HGST trial HDD.
      Thanks mate.

    • Agreed! Thanks for the awesome info. Do you know if the Deskstars are quieter than the WD Reds specifically? I'm planning a local RAID storage box that will sit on my desk so I'd prefer less noise above all else. Looks like the Reds run a bit cooler - I have Reds in a NAS already - just checked temps and all 4 Reds are sitting at 28C or 29C.

      • well say you were buying 12tb

        $245 * 3 = $735

        or

        $320 * 2 + $43.81 = $683.81

Plus you only need a 2 bay nas with 2 drives (2 drives are also less noisy/use less power than 3).

        • but with only two drives, you have 12TB with no raid, or a 6TB raid 1. You'd want to be religiously backing up to external drives as well if you went the 12TB option.

        • @jdr:

Raid doesn't help (and striping makes recovery much harder if something does go wrong).

You should be backing up anyway. I always run JBOD on my NAS with an external backup.

If the HGST drives are 7200rpm they are likely noisier.

I'm sure toms/anand or someone has tested the dB noise output of them.

That's already a pretty good temp for a 4 x Red setup, can't imagine you'll improve it moving to a higher RPM drive.

Last second edit: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1364-page6.html - seems the WD Red 4TBs are among the quietest

        • that is from 2013 - these drives didn't exist then

  • Would you really risk it tho coming from the US?.
I haven't seen a Item yet come from Newegg or NCIX without the box looking
like its gone through a war zone so far so risking on a HDD seems silly.

All the items (10+) I've ordered from Newegg have arrived in good condition. I only used the express shipping option though… I think they use Toll from memory.

I bought 3x HGST 4tb from US based store bhphotovideo a few years back that have been fantastic - got here fine. The packaging for the drives should offer quite a bit of protection irrespective of handling.

Anyway, for $100 I'm willing to risk a bit.

Just to add, Newegg will actually ship HDDs in their original manufacturer boxes (the kind with the thick plastic inserts to absorb shock); not merely wrapped in a plastic ESD bag and shoved into a padded envelope unlike some vendors I know (cough ShoppingExpress).

        • Australian computer shops get the standard WD and Seagate hard drives from suppliers in a bulk box of 20 hdd's. The bulk box is a standard cardboard box with styrofoam which has slots for 20 hdd's. Once the bulk box is open you basically have the individual hdd's in ESD bags only. The only "internal" hdd in Australia that I have seen come from suppliers with retail boxes is Hitachi and that is not every model. External's obviously come with retail boxes, being external.

        • Retail vs OEM packaging.

  • Anyone have any ideas on a parcel forwarder?

If you put through 2 orders and got them consolidated - you'd save $50 USD using the visa checkout deal.

    • Most obvious choice: https://www.shipito.com/

    • Is auspost shopmate still 25% off? That should be the cheapest.

      • They all have various deals and confusing fees for consolidation etc - comparing is hard.

Would be nice if someone with experience could post one they like.

This deal could be a good one to test it out on, as with $50 USD off I can't see how you'd possibly come out behind (newegg ships free within US also).

      • Used auspost 2 months ago, my item just arrived on Monday. Pay a little more for a better service.

Newegg doesn't accept international orders shipped to US addresses. Unless you have a debit/credit card from the US which will pass their AVS check (Australian-issued cards don't have this feature), then it won't work. I tried everything to no avail.

      • Ahh ok.. well good to know - amended the deal.

Some forwarding services can buy for you on their USA CC, but you would have to really want something.

    • Newegg is shipping to me in Melbourne

Reading the backblaze blog post on the hard drives they use, HGST seem to be the most reliable that they've used….. and this is testing thousands of drives per model. Doesn't seem they've tested larger than 4TB but those failure rates are certainly promising for what to expect from these!
