eBay, Chinese Based Sellers & 'Lost/Undelivered' Items - Anyone Else Notice an Increase?

Hi,

I'm just seeking feedback, comparative views from other OzBers. I've been a long time Ebay buyer & often bought from overseas and Chinese sellers. In all these years very rarely had an item I bought not arrive from the seller (whether the reason for this was it not being sent or lost by the postal service etc).

However over the past year I've noticed a massive increase in the low price (sub $AUD10) items that I've purchased from China based sellers not arriving. It's hard to be precise but from something that used to very rarely occur it's now seeming like 10-20% of all items are not arriving.

Has anyone else noticed a significant increase in the lower priced (and generally sent via non-tracked postage) items not arriving after you purchase them?

It's purely a theory but I suspect that many sellers are not sending a % of their sale items. Worst case scenario for them they refund the monies if & when (and this is the key thing) the buyer complains enough to get a refund made. So there's actually no net cost for the seller do do this - if anything its almost an 'interest free loan' for seller funds that they refund after a month or so.

I'd like to think I'm completely wrong and there's no systematic practice to defraud Ebay and buyers but I'm puzzled why so many items are not arriving compared to in the quite recent past.

Thanks, Nick :-)

  • Surprisingly all of mine have arrived and I've ordered around 10 things this year haha.

  • +2

I recently ordered 2 Items from a Chinese Seller, and after neither arrived I ended up with a full refund.

With low priced Items some Buyers may not bother going through the eBay refund rigmarole, and just write off the purchase, leaving a nice profit for the Seller if the Item was never actually sent!

    Food for thought!

    • Bourb,

Yes, this is exactly the theory I have - they tend to only do it on the very low priced items $10> as many buyers will wait for the obligatory month (during which time the seller emails saying - expect shipping delays etc etc) and when it doesn't arrive a % of buyers can't be bothered complaining & going through the refund process. Which is 100% profit for the seller.

Obviously my sample size is incredibly small & uneven to draw anything from BUT I just find it ever so odd that lost items never occurred to me at all - and yet over the past year or so I'm suddenly getting a significant number.

Haha and it's not a light fingered postie etc - I actually personally know the guy who delivers here.

Anyway Ebay's refund system is much more user friendly & simple BUT its a PITA on those items you needed and after a months wait have to face ordering all over again. :-/

PS. The other funny thing is on an order like that which never arrives I feel the sellers often have an expectation that if they give a full refund the buyer will still give them a Positive feedback rating……but really I find this illogical and find myself either not lodging feedback or going with the neutral rating. The feedback system is there for a reason and I find it wrong on every level to 'reward/endorse' the seller when the transaction wasn't a positive one. Sellers and neutral feedback is a whole other conversation though - they're very funny about it!

  • Yep, often order multiple items, usually all is good, but last 6 months had four orders with items left out, all bar one refunded.

usually all good form me. Maybe just the 1 mishap out of a dozen +…. These days i try and only order from Hong Kong sellers if im buying some generic things.

My latest 3 purchases last week were all from hong kong sellers (even though the chinese sellers might be have been a few cents cheaper. Hopefully they should arrive before chrissy as the backpack is a work kris kringle gift, the toy blocks for my kid at xmas, and the rockets for my nieces pressie :)
