I thought Ozbargain got notices not to post catalogs deals before they are officially available online at Coles and woollies

    • +6

I think only Woolworths have complained so the Coles deals are okay for posting.

      • +25

That's ok, more people to go to Coles/Aldi/IGA then and hopefully the long slow death of Woolworth's by their own doing :)

        • +6

thats true…Woolworths is gradually falling in the market :)

        • +2

          @CrazyMexican:

I don't shop at Coles but what are they doing to beat Woolies? I'm sure they don't undercut Woolies on price or number of specials each week. Woolies, Coles and IGA all seem to have products on special at the same price.

        • +6

          @CheapRichGuy:

Can't see the harm of posting the specials a few days early. Aldi advertise their specials about a week earlier than they're on sale.

          Seriously, what's the harm?

        • +1

@CheapRichGuy: Price trust is the main thing (which the CEO said) and the other is the fact Woolies cannot cut prices as deep because of all the extra money the need to pump into Masters

        • +1

My parents still go to woolworths just "because" out of habit or brand loyalty, they associate woolworths more as an icon of australia, like holden i suppose. Coles has always had the image of the little brother with smaller sized supermarkets and less accessibility with opening hours etc. anyway, everytime i go in there to check out a few items it seems exactly the way it's been for 20 years, coles you get the impression they're making a genuine effort to do something new, woolworths just feels trapped in the 90's

        • +1

I was BEGINNING to feel bad nuked woolies on the coke and quilton deals posted here. I am glad I won't feel bad any more because woolie is digging its own grave with this latest BS on weekly sales embargo as we are just helping them to dig faster.

    • -3

I don't understand the negs. He's not wrong.

    • +5

Wonder what's so confidential about it, hardly a trade secret when you sometimes receive the catalogue in the mail before Monday 5pm.

    • +2

is Woolies worried that people won't purchase the products until they come on sale on Wednesday? Most people don't even read the catalogues.

    • +7

Hahaha, its funny that a business (woolworths) does not want free internet marketing by unpaid sales agents(ozbargainers). A clever business would actually release the catalogue in ozbargain one week ahead of the competitor to increase their sales. Anyway, we are not loosing anything but woolworths is the looser by taking this action.

    • Not sure why EC is getting Neg'd?

you should be joining FB & friending woolies, having a whinge & then unfriending them.

      • +1

Not sure why EC is getting Neg'd

Because he was wrong in saying that both Woolworths and Coles requested their catalogues not be put online. Only Woolworths have asked for it (through their lawyers of course) so Coles shouldn't be painted with the same brush (yet)..

        • +1

What he said started with "I thought…" that's a query, not a statement. He thought wrong, but that's not neg worthy. Anyway he's a heavy contributor to the site, so IMHO he should get plenty of leeway, obviously others don't agree.

        • @supabrudda: agree with you. People are too harsh

    • +1

what would Woolworths actually do if people didn't stop promoting them!?

Their legal team probably had a knee-jerk reaction and wanted to write a letter to justify their existence. But the next step? I couldn't imagine the CEO and executive team signing off on funding a lawsuit against a 20yo blogger / grandma learning wordpress for promoting their catalogue which they received in their letterbox.

Seems like a bluff. (hint hint MyGroceries + the other mob that has since evaporated! lol)

    • +1

Woolworths is good at shooting themself in the foot

    • +1

Why do Woolworths just keep digging their hole deeper and deeper? They should take any free advertising they can get. I don't get a catalogue so seeing a special on here is the only reason I would step foot in their store these days. Speaking of which, I'm off to Coles LOL.

  • DSE currently have 20% off iTunes cards

      It's always the case.

  • "50% Off Cadbury Roses Boxed Chocolates 450g $7.75"

As a child my friend taught me to eat the chocolate and fill the packet with tissues.
Even now I always double squeeze the chocolate before I take it.

  • +9

I had no about the woolworths thing until I read this post. How petty and cheap are they, no wonder they are losing money hand over fist.

    • +11

Yeah especially considering a lot of Aussies already have the catalogue in their mail boxes lol

  • +6

I will up vote this just because of woolworth's pettiness,

    • won't be long until Coles follows suit. It'll be fine if someone post the deal on Sunday but not nearly a week in advance, I've seen Woolies and Coles weekly deal being published even more than 7 days ahead (which meant the upcoming deal weren't even active when the deal after it showed up), that's why Woolies is being anal about it.

  • +2

Aldi have their catalogue out a week in advance.

Besides, I think Coles and Woolworths only have two catalogues and just rotate them with a date change. Same crap every time in their catalogues.

    • +1

Aldi have special buys on their non grocery products but rarely have any of their generic grocery products on special.

I guess that's why they release their catalogues so early. They know it won't really affect their basic grocery sales.

Better spend it fast, before DSE goes under.

      • You joking or being serious?

      • I CANT wait for the day. When DSE goes under, I'm going to be like one of those doomsday guys naked with a double sided bill board marching in front of their stores proclaiming the end just happened!

        • Why would you want less competition in the market?

        • @Agret: Cause they are useless and have caused way more trouble then benefits. If they were reliable and had normal phone customer service then they would then be considered a retailer. If they then went above and beyond I would shop there. So currently, they fall below the norm.

You do realise that they have a multitude of ACCC complaints against them right?

        • Even if you dislike the store, competition is good for all consumers! Plenty of us have purchased Dick Smith deals in the past year, whether it were gaming software (before it started being excluded) or Eneloop Batteries. Not to mention the people who are employed by the company being out of a job!

If you don't like the place, don't shop there and if that's the case, you shouldn't even be on this thread!

        • +2

If you don't like the place, don't shop there and if that's the case, you shouldn't even be on this thread!

Sadly that doesn't work for the best interests of society, people need to be governed and protected

    • Used mine last time to buy my iPad Mini 4.

      • Does it show the discount when scanned at the register before purchase? I went to Coles Central on George St. Sydney CBD and the helpful checkout attendant said nothing showed up to indicate they are participating and said Coles Central is different to ordinary Coles supermarkets with stock and offers that differ. I left them as I didn't want to take the risk.

        • +1

It was confusing but when I did it you paid for e.g. $750 worth of gift cards and when you use them they become $820ish. It worked, but I was a tad dubious about it.

        • @try2bhelpful: Gotcha, thank you. I bought some gift cards from an ordinary Coles supermarket. The staff didn't know anything about it and no extra value showed on checkout/activation but 110% of the value does indeed register when redeemed during checkout when purchasing online at the Dick Smith website, thanks.

    • +1

Can I buy iPhone with these cards?

        • Do you know if you can purchase it online using a gift card or in store only? Thx mate

    • Usually $50 and $100 denominations.

    • Wanted to use the Dick Smith Gift card and David Jones Market / Elizabeth St store. Called to confirm but the guy said they only accept David Jones Gift card and have no system of accepting the Dick Smith - can someone confirm if this is true

      • +1

David Jones would only accept their own brand of Gift Cards… That's just normal practice across all stores.

      • They will also accept Westfield gift voucher since both stores are attached to the Westfield complex.

        • thanks for clarifying that.

    • Is this still on?
