Need a New Phone - Deals?

So my current phone just died :/ It was a Samsung Galaxy S4, so I've been looking around. I thought I would be able to get some good deals today (isn't today Cyber Monday?).

Been looking at the LG G4, as I want to have a phone that can get the new Telstra 4GX service, as well as an upgrade over my old phone. I don't mind if it doesn't have a SD card slot, though it would have to be 32GB if this is the case. Removable battery doesn't have to be there, but it's nice to have.

Any ideas?

Otherwise I'll keep looking around… Thanks

  • I was in the same boat. Ended up buying LG G2. Much cheaper, very happy with my purchase.

Also, If I would change the phone from LG to something else, I wouldn't mind giving XIAOMI a try. They seem very reasonable.

    • Unfortunately the G2 and no Xiaomi phones don't have the Telstra 4GX standard. So I'll keep my eyes out for deals today.

      • My G2 has 4G and it's more than enough for anything you'd wanna do in normal circumstances. I think it's a bit slow if you want to do torrents but that's about it. No issues with streaming movies or anything like that.

        your call anyway :)

        • Reason behind wanting 4GX is that I am changing to a Telstra plan from my old Optus one. Coming from the grandfathered 3G $2 a day unlimited everything to the Telstra medium plan that was available awhile ago ($400 for a year, 7GB Data). So I want to take full advantage of a new network.

Also would rather a newer phone, coming from having a S4 for 2 years. It was a good phone, but I guess it's time for an upgrade since it died.

Also when you do the calculations, I'll be saving about $320 towards the new phone from changing to the new plan.

          Optus: ~ 60 a month x 12 = $720 a year
          Telstra: 33 a month x 12 = $396 a year

        • @Betabotx:

True. But technically you are not saving much :)

I went with Amaysim $40/mo (unlimited) which has 4G. (See offers here: https://www.amaysim.com.au/mobile-plans )

If you go like this you have 40/mo x 12 = $480 and buy the phone outright.

Your money, you can do whatever you want of course but it might not be the best thing to get a plan on optus/telstra as you usually end up paying a lot more for a lot less. You might be better off buying the phone with a credit card with no interest over 12 months. Donno, just saying.

Just thoughts and decisions … :) nothing wrong with either option.

          EDIT:
With amaysim you can have the $40 option for $5 for the first month. Just use the code "FIVER"

        • +1

I believe for myself that the Telstra deal is cheaper for me, as the Amaysim comes out to $445 a year (including the $5 first month). So I still save $49 for the year, and it has the extra 2GB of data. Even though the Telstra plan doesn't have unlimited calls, it has $1000 worth which is heaps.

Always was my plan to buy the phone outright, I have the money (wanna stay away from credit cards), but nothing wrong with trying to find a phone for a bit cheaper.

Also the Telstra plan is only for a year, which by that time will probably be time for a new plan anyways.

        • @Betabotx: Now you got me interested in this … :)

        • It's back to $40 a month now though. The deal that I'm getting was over in like a week.

Although it's taken me only a month to actually get the deal, since Telstra apparently thinks my account is Fraud-worthy…. (saw it on my account looking over a customer support dudes shoulder). Had to provide so many details of my life, it's not even funny.

  • Cyber Monday is tomorrow technically as its a US thing. Maybe wait a bit.

    • Hmm was thinking that, but would think Australia would just do it today to follow the Monday idea. Even though I think I heard something about Cyber Tuesday.

Haha I'll see how long I can last without a mobile :(

      No Music….
      No Social….
      No Internet….
      No OzBargain….
      No LinusTechTips….

      Gah….

  • Have a look at this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/221941

here is the mobile phone page. It's 20% off and they had

I've had a few emails this morning about cyber monday including one from Kogan, eStore and eBay… It is definitely a becoming a thing in Australia now… But yes there will be more deals tomorrow no guarantees the US retailers will ship to Australia.

Have you got a budget in mind?

    • Already have had a look through some of those, but of course they have been marked up to adjust for the discounts :/ So the deals aren't that great.

Think I'll hold off for today and tomorrow and see how it goes. If not by then, then I'll just grab something that's decently priced.

Budget would be in the range of $500 - $800.

  • A Galaxy S4 died? What happened to it??

    • Left it on charging over night, and in the morning it was dead. Turns on for like 2 seconds and then off again.

From what I can gather it probably is a power button issue, but I have tried to fix it myself and no luck, was going to see today how much for a fix. If it's reasonable price, I'll probably see if I can sell it off or give it to my dad (keeps asking for it when I get a new phone).

      • You need a battery replacement perhaps. Find a new battery first!

        • I have tried two different batteries (bought 2 extra ones for it, for those heavy use days), and I know both are fully charged.

      • Ahhh, the same thing happened to a Samsung Galaxy S3 of mine… Never found a fix for it actually, it still remains in a drawer safely out of revenue service.

        • Was able to get it fixed, well as far as I know it's fixed… It's currently charging from a flat battery. The guys at the repair shop charged me $65 for the job. I feel it was worth it, as even if I still get the new phone, I could sell it for around $180.
