Do replacement products have their own warranty periods?

Say I buy a washing machine with an extended warranty to 5 years and the product is replaced due to a major problem with a month of warranty left. Does the replaced item have its own statutory warranty? Or if the product lasts 6 months have they met their part of the original agreement?

We had something similar about 6 months back. Our washing machine couldn't be repaired and had a few months left on the extended 5 year warranty. It was through The Good Guys. The warranty company gave us a budget of ~$900 to pick a replacement in the shop. The replacement comes with it's own factory warranty anyway (as it's new). We then purchased an extended warranty ourselves to take it up to a new run of 5 years.
I was quite impressed by TGG's extended warranty - no issues at all.

    • Thanks for the info. I suppose since our model breaks every 2 years it may have been economical to get the second extended warranty as well (despite the frustration of having no machine for a while).

      • You may still be able to purchase an extended warranty if the replacement is still within the factory warranty period.
Yes, it's a pain being without a machine for a while. The only issue we had with the whole extended warranty thing is that it took about 3 weeks in total to turn around (there was a bit of confusion by one of the CSRs but after that all was good).
I rarely purchase extended warranties but when you have something that is used in our house at least every day, has heavy moving parts and involves water….

In most cases, I would expect the replacement or repaired device to have only the rest of the original warranty period.

theclearout has done very well for themselves.

    • That is what I was expecting the situation to be, especially if an extended warranty had more that 12 months to run. OP should get the full benefit of the manufacturer factory warranty if they receive a new machine as replacement, so essentially getting more that the original 5 years.
Worth checking with the supplier of the replacement machine if they have an option to purchase a new extended warranty.

  • May also depend on how they check to see if it's within warranty. With my PS4 Sony just asked for the serial number without any other proof of purchase. Apple have also done the same in store before. New washing machine new serial new warranty? Maybe…

  • I know with Apple products its 90 Days or the remainder of the warranty, whichever is greater.

i.e. if you have your iphone replaced on the last day of the 2 year warranty, it will be extended 90 days from the replacement's date.
