Beware Dick Smith "up to % off Sale"

Well, I have seen a few deals and read the sales in the papers.

Well yesterday I left the Doncaster store feeling like I had been DICKed. Complete waste of my time.

Up to 60% off Cordless phones, yet every phone I picked up was at full RRP (only after getting scanned as they did not have price tags).
Even worse, the Uniden my Dad wanted was $163.16 at Dick Smith online, yet full $199 instore at DS with a big "up to 60% off" sign on it.
Pretty sure this is called bait advertising.

The Blueray players "30% off Display and clearance lines"

Sony BDPS1500 Was labeled Was $129 now $109 save $20. This scanned at full $129 (Online DS is selling for $101.25 today)

Sony BDPS6500 Was labeled Was $199 now $169 save $30. This scanned at full $199 (Online DS is selling for $154.42 today)

All they said was those are old price tags and those prices are no longer valid the players are now full price.
Now they are still rubbish prices so I was not going to argue with them to honor the price.

Anyway, I bumped into a fellow OzBargainer and he mentioned that the guys at DS Doncaster were useless yet he had great service at DS Camberwell.

How has your local DS store been treating this sale?

After my experience I will now be less likely to shop at DS in the future.

    Those fateful words, 'Up to'

Some items were discounted heavily whereas many items were not on sale at all.

It didn't help that you had to get every item scanned to price check as no sale items were tagged at the stores I went to.

It really is hit and miss with some stores much better than others. Really don't understand why some salespeople take it so personally when big sales are on - Unless they feel they'll be out of a job soon you'd think you're taking the discounts out of their bank account.

    • Don't sales people have $$ kpi's to meet?

Mr Maxwell "you'd think you're taking the discounts out of their bank account."
      Very well put.
this is the impression i got from the Doncaster store.
Less than helpful. If the store closes, they will only have them selves to blame.

  • I'm always surprised when people expect their to be savings instore when it mentions up to. Happens so often I don't even bother now.

    • Difference here is that Dick Smith has a stock and cash issue. The sale is meant to help with that. They need to concentrate on getting some cash flow and reducing inventory yet seem to be doing a very bad job of it.

  • Went into DS and found nothing to buy. There are a lot of phone cases for sale at $1, I think those items on sale are items that nobody wants. Some laptops are on sale as well and they have a sticker telling customer to ask for a deal, something that JB Hifi is famous for. Some PS4, XB1 games on sale as well for $20.

Well yesterday I left the Doncaster store feeling like I had been DICKed.

Stopped there because I didn't need to read any further.

That's how I've felt on just about any deal I've done with dick. Done meaning buying and then being derailed by 2 year stocktakes, theft, having to pickup up stock from other stores meaning 10 etc.

    Remember the old logo? http://www.trulydeeply.com.au/madly/files/2010/02/Old-DS-Log…

The word Dick is followed by a picture of a head :D

What's ironic is that the business was actually good back when a Dick was running it, as opposed to now just being run by dicks :P

i wonder why they're going out of business

  • Picked up Xbox one gtaV for $20. Great deal. I was happy

I managed to pick up a cheap point and shoot camera, the nikon coolpix s02. Seems to be selling for $199, but I got it for $29. Maybe I should have got 2, but that opportunity is gone now.

Having said that, I think it will be very difficult to get a good deal from DSE now, because a lot of stock seems to have been sold and the stuff that's left is often the expensive junk like old ink cartridges, cables, etc.

Interesting to see what happens tomorrow though, that's their BIG BIG BIG CLEARANCE sale.

There was talk of 70% off whole store.

But is that going to be Up to 70% off?

      • Yes I heard those rumors that everything will be 70% off tomorrow, not up to.

I just saw the latest news and the Dick smith stocks have plummeted quite badly. So in saying that, there maybe some truth in the rumor. I will be waiting in front of DS tomorrow morning on a chance of it happening. lol

I went into the Springvale shop on Thursday, the day the sale was announced. ALL the camera display stalks were empty, except for the full price Nikon. I was not surprised.

  • so many people got bargains… and the minority who missed out get so annoyed. this thread was crated 5 hours ago. the sale has been going for days. good luck getting many more bargains.

could you purchase the Bluray player online and do click & collect from that store? i would have just done online and make the staff honor the sale.

    • The post was more about poor staff attitude, misleading signage and no price labels.
Discounted one off floor stock is not really an amazing deal.

      • It's a clearance sale so it would be floor stock + older stock already in the stores not brand new stock

  • Well I went in to our local DS (Cranbourne) 2-3 days ago; was told there were no special/sale prices for display phones, etc … and told to check out another store … didn't bother. None of the tablets were offering display stock prices too, only one an Apple I think, had some special sale price on it … but nothing to do with display stock sale.

  • In response to BlueDuffelcoat, I bought the same Nikon Coolpix from DS Cranbourne, last night. It cost me $89 - now I read from your post that yours was $29! I feel as though I was Dicked too, after seeing that. Never again!

    • Can you return it?

I actually picked up a second one today for the same price, at MOVE.

  • I also got a pair of skullcandy earphones for $12.

Here's me recent experience at a Dick Smith (DS) store. A couple of days ago I went to DS to quickly grab something, referred from another DS store that said this store has it; and here's how it went:

Rocked up to said store that has it, took good look for it - not even there, asked staff…
Staff: "I can't find it too".
Me: "Well check your computer if it says so",
Staff: "Well the computer's gonna say the same thing because whatever's here shown instore on the shelves - if it's not there, then it's not there",
Me: "Well can you at least check the computer for me to assure me on that?"
Staff: "Fine". Goes on the computer, does something and says, "computer says no too."
Me "are you sure? Because another DS store told me this store might have it as it said on their computer"
Staff: "Well sorry, if I can't find it, and computer doesn't see it either I can't help you."
Me "Alright, I'll be going to that other store just across the street in the shopping centre"
Staff: "Well they'd be close, try come back here tomorrow"
    Me: "Okay!"
Staff: "Now is there anything else I can help you with?"
    Me:
Staff: "If you don't have anything, can you please leave?"
Me: "Hold up I'm thinking…okay there's nothing - I'll take my leave." => I thought there might have been something else I wanted - well whatever it was at the time, it has eluded my memory banks.
    Staff: "Thankyou."

The very next day, I drove back to the same place, but this time checked the DS store in the shopping centre. I questioned one of the staff if you have this item in the back or something because I can't see in the shelves. One of the staff replies "Sure what is it?"
I answered: "PS Vita memory card" And he says:
"Okay, let me check for you, give me a moment" Goes the computer and types something up, and reveals to me that they have two in stock, but they're the 4GB ones. I asked them where the 8 and 16 and bigger ones are at as I was told there were some here. He says, well there should be an 8 and a 16 one from the DS store right across the street. I replied saying that I tried them yesterday right before they closed and they said they don't have any. "well if they don't have it either, bad luck then." he replies. He then prints me a piece of paper and told me to give this to one of the staffs over there so they know exactly what you're after.

Ok so I'm thinking - alright, I'll try again, and if they still say no then I'll just come back here and grab the 4GB one and hope that it will last me till the 64GB goes on sale at a later date. So I'm walking to the DS store across the street, go straight to the counter and queue up. I saw one of the same guy's from yesterday working today and I think he saw me and then walked out trying to avoid eye contact! Or maybe it was just a coincident that I happen to come here on he's break/last minute of his shift. So after a some waiting, I got a different dude, showed him the piece of paper and he's like yeah look into that. Moments later, shows up with the 8GB card! To my amazement, I was like "Oh you do have it?! Do you have the 16GB one that's reported by the computer?"
He's like "oh you want that one instead?" I was like "yeah". He goes to the back somewhere, comes out with the 16GB card and I gasped!
"So that guy I was with yesterday…………" thinking in my head.

So paid the guy for the card, walked back up to the one in the shopping centre and reported back to the same staff who helped me earlier and told him "Look what I found" showing him the 16GB card "Probably the other guy I was with yesterday didn't even try, or was hiding it…." And he's like:
    "yeah probably, lazy bastard…"

And yeah, my recent DS experience. There's probably some grammatical and spelling and layout errors, but this isn't an English test - for all yous grammar/spelling nazis! :P

As for that DS staff who caused me grief, you know who you are - if you're reading this!
