  • What's the shipping ETA to Melbourne? in time for Christmas?

    • I reckon between 2-7 working days depending on the local courier dispatch speed.
You've got 3 weeks to go till christmas - so it should definitely reach you before then.

    • I bought a HP microserver from Shopping Express on last week and got it on Tuesday.
      Btw. I am in Melbourne.

      • You've deserved it :D!!!

      • I'm sure the fortune that you are making selling to the Ozbargain community helps too ;)

    • Until you can't fit more RAM in :>

      • LOL than you buy another mobo, cpu, gpu, psu, case, ssd and than you use the more Ram you obtained. And repeat. SimpalZ!

        Eneloop has been mentioned.

  • Rep, any 2242 sized M2 SSD?

    • unfortunately not.

  • Hi Rep, any chance to do a deal for the Sandisk CZ80 64GB USB? Been looking to get one, just waiting for the price to come down a little.

    • we have not score a good deal on that model yet. Please PM me your expected price, we will try harder.

  • Do you stock low profile DDR3 RAM at all? (Does it every get discounted this well?) :)

    • unfortunately, we don't stock low profile DDR3 RAM at this moment.

  • hi Rep
Could you please tell me if the Kingston DDR 3 is compatible with the motherboard GIGABYTE GA-B85M-HD3?
    Thanks

      yeap

  • DDR3 RAM is the low voltage version?

  • Is RAM with heat sink better than without?

    • No. Unless overclocking?

    • +2

DDR3L and DDR4 memory don't need heatsinks, ever, due to their lower voltages (1.35v and 1.2v respectively) they run a lot less hotter than their 1.5v counterparts.

      Less volts, less heat.

With RAM the heatsinks installed on most branded memory don't do a proper job as a heatsink — so often the term 'heatspreader' is coined to more accurately describe what they do. They distribute heat evenly amongst the memory modules by having a aluminium or copper strip running horizontally across the RAM, but they won't do much to actually dissipate the heat.

      • Were the heat sinks ever necessary or just a marketing gimmick to charge more because they look cooler (admittedly a good reason to get one)?

        • +1

Heatspreaders allow for cooler designs and branding stickers to be attached to the RAM.

Other than that, back in DDR2 days they may have served a purpose, because to overclock DDR2 memory one would have needed to pump around 3.4 volts of power into their memory to get them to run faster. This article from 2006 has some test results
          http://www.legitreviews.com/do-memory-heat-spreaders-make-a-…

Nowadays with RAM running at 1.35 and 1.2 volts the heatspreader now merely serves an aesthetic purpose.

  • The model number for the kingston 8gb ram is KVR16LN11/8, the one installed on my computer is KVR16N11/8. Whats the difference?

    • +3

      voltage difference.
the one installed on your computer is 1.5V, the one on offer here is 1.35V

      • Thanks for the quick reply

        • +3

please do not mix them as it may not work.

  • thank you for the post! by the way ssd deals are not bad for those who missed sandisk ultra II deals from amazon

  • Hi rep, can you confirm if either of these RAM modules are compatible with the HP Microserver N54L? Most of us bought our Microservers from you guys ;)

  • Any more Crucial 8gb ddr4 sticks rep? I want to get one for dual channel!

  • Far out I could build a cheap skylake system now. MSY are now selling basic motherboards with DDR4 for $94! No M2 slots or USB 3.1 which is fine by me.

    • CPU's are still pricey though. I'm gonna wait till next year for the prices to drop a little.

      • You probably have to wait until AMD comes out with it's next generation called Zen. Maybe June next year? I'm looking forward to it. But was let down by bulldozer so if some great specials come in the next 6 months from Intel. I'll probably just cave in.

  • Hi Rep,
Any chance of getting a deal on the Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 8GB (2x4GB) kits in the future?

  • Hi rep, will the Kingston 8GB DDR3 RAM for Desktop PC work for an Alienware Alpha, replacing the stock Samsung Ram 1x4GB PC3-12800 DDR3L 1600MHz?

    • DDR3L and DDR3 memory are different. While their form factor is the same, the voltage isn't, and your machine will generally only take DDR3L or DDR3. It's best to buy the same type, and to never mix RAM types (i.e. you can't boot using a mixture of DDR3 and DDR3L, even if the computer supports both types)

The Alienware alpha, from memory also does not use Desktop RAM, so you'll be hunting for SO-DIMM modules.
