Dick Smith Display Laptop - What Warranty Do I Have?

Hi all,

Went in to dick smith today to get some cheap Kaiser baas gopro accessories, got excited and came out with a laptop. It was a decent price, 15.6" HP 2 in 1 laptop, 8gb ram etc, $550 because it was the display model. Looks to be between 35-45% mark down, more importantly I was in the market for a surface and this will do the job nicely, keyboard included.

So I've run the warranty check online via HP, and it says it actually runs out in 2 days, so Sunday. I'm unsure if the keyboard was working properly, so spoke to the guy and he suggested I wait more than 30 days so it wasn't "dead on arrival" and then go through the warranty process if its broken, I might get lucky and get a brand new replacement.

My question is, do I still get 1 year warranty from time of purchase, or is the warranty literally up in 2 days?

Thanks
Nick

    same as new warranty.
starts from when you bought it.
thats what most refurb/demo/display stock is so can't see why yours would be different.

if it had no warranty I would want it a lot cheaper.

    • Cool thanks, so even though when I run the serial number through the HP website and it says I have 2 days left on the 1 year warranty, that doesn't apply?

register the laptop or email HP and just say I bought it today from a store and here is my receipt.
They will go by the receipt.

they wouldnt know when a store sells a computer to be able to say the warranty is expired.

you get Dick Smith warranty and they will negotiate that for you to HP.
No problem to you. you get solid 1 year. (If they still exist within a year)

          exactly.

haha, if they exist is another matter! Thanks for your help.

  • Maybe it was a return? Original owner registered it 12 months ago?

  • Hi OP, I am very skeptical in ex display model in DSE because personally I have not seen one bargain from many visits to the shops.
Saw staff just pack up the old laptop in the box and put the same price on as the price tag.
May be ok if u know your laptop and price.

    • i know i got a good price - im on it now and its well worth 550. it outspecs the surface 3 i was looking at, and comes in around 200 less including a magnetic detachable keyboard. it's a bit bigger at 15.6", but that makes it much better for work.

just upgraded to windows 10 so i can use it to play xbox one if the mrs needs the tv :)

that's an interesting point about it being registered and returned…but under ACL i still have 1 year with Dick Smith regardless, is that right?

      • How long does the battery live on a full charge?

One of the main concerns when I had when I looked at the display units was whether or not the battery was run down and degraded. If your warranty only read for 2 days remaining, that means that your machine is actually about a year old because the countdown timer starts when the machine was first set-up. Dick Smith don't remove the batteries from the machine either when it's on display, since it's not removable…

that's what I figured. I had it on most the afternoon, with a bit here and there with the keyboard closed so 'asleep'. then an hour or so on netflix tonight, lasted the windows 10 upgrade without needing to plug in too, so don't think it's too shot.

  • What model 2 in 1 did you get?

      HP Envy X2 15.6"

Your warranty starts from date of purchase so keep the receipt

  • It's the opposite, if it fails within 30 days (dead on arrival) you will usually get a replacement, but if you wait longer than the 30 day period they will send it away for assessment/repair.

    • Hmm, wonder why he said to leave it >30 days then, hmm. As it's a display, is it easier to wait after 30 days? I don't think they will have stock so may just offer me a refund. Is it their duty to send away for me if needed?

      • Under 30 days it would be a straight exchange but because you got the last ie. Display stock it becomes more complicated with several options including a full refund, equivalent replacement or sending it back for repair, due to no possibility to replace with the exact same unit.

After 30 days the unit will go back to the manufacturers for repair or replacement, less work for the retail outlet.

  • Hi Nick,

    I'm a DS supervisor.

The above response from katie is correct. In the first 30 days we will refund or exchange on the spot. After that we have to send it to hp for repair unless we contact our Area manager or HP directly.

The warranty starts from date of purchase.

I would suggest you head back to the store you bought it from and either have them replace/refund (if you think it's damaged) or have them sign your receipt with a signature, staff ID and date to prove that you contacted them during the 30 day DOA period.

If you have any trouble doing that feel free to PM me.

    • Hi Pharos, thanks. if they dont have another, as its display and was the last one, whats the procedure? Would they usually check other stores? im happy with it apart from the keybdoard so dont want a refund. If they cant replace, do they need to follow up with HP?

      thanks

      • If they don't have stock they will check other stores, but you would need to collect it yourself from whatever store is closest.

If they can't replace it they don't need to contact hp and will just refund it. If you prefer a repair, they can send it off to HP for a repair but it could take up to three weeks because it's so close to Christmas.

Don't forget if the laptop develops a major problem you still have the right to a repair, exchange or refund at your choosing regardless of whether it's in or out of its '30 days'. HP was fined by the ACCC for their misleading assessment/repair practices in 2013. So if the keyboard throws it in on day 130, you are still entitled to the above, assuming the store did not inform you of the broken keyboard issue before you bought it. Read the ACL it's good to understand your rights :-)

I've read the basic ACL, but not in depth!

Just to update: Swapped my display unit for an entirely new unit this morning, $1400 laptop for $550. Happy with that :)
