It is illegal to touch your phone whilst driving, even in this holder.

    • +4

      From VicRoads:

      Fully licensed car drivers

Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, except to make or receive a phone call or to use its audio/music functions provided the phone:

is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle, or
can be operated by the driver without touching any part of the phone, and the phone is not resting on any part of the driver's body.

Using a phone as a navigational device/GPS while driving is prohibited unless it is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle. All other functions (including video calls, texting and emailing) are prohibited.

Got anything to back up your claim? Not illegal in NSW.

      • In Vic. if craddle affixed to the windshield and phone in it secured, not illegal to make or answer phone. You can do it, ONLY to answer/call.

        • -7

Anybody who plasters anything to the windscreen should be slapped in the back of the head then given a ticket for being a plum. What in gods earth make it smart to impead your vision in anyway.
Law should be changed to ban anything that is not standard from factory may not be placed above or on top of dash.

Seen cars with wires cammeras, gps and phone all plastered to winscreen…what blind spot, what distraction…
          Stupidity at the highest level.

        • I rang St Kilda and Caulfield Police stations and was told you cannot touch your phone whilst driving. She said that includes touching the green button to take the call or the red button to hang up. I will call Vic Roads tomorrow about the "or" word here which is very misleading

          https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/driver…

          and report back.

I think it is very not nice to give bad advice when it can cost OTHER people $443 and 4 points. If you are not sure don't give bad advice. If you get booked you can't really say 'oh, another ozbargainer said it's ok'.

If they are illegal. you can leave the phone in your pocket or bag and use bluetooth to automatically answer and then there is no need for these cradles or holders. I don't know about GPS. I guess you can ask Siri or Google for directions without touching the phone.

        • Anything to back up your claim?
What is you are using it as a GPS?

        • @abacus: I tell you that you can receive/make a call IF the phone is in a cradle that is permanently affixed to the body of the car. ONLY if you are the holder of a full driver licence. I'm 100% on this.

Not allowed to text or anything else for that matter.

        • @zapy: That's all very nice. No-one is disagreeing.
Question is 'can you legally touch your phone when in a cradle and you are driving'?
          Very simple question.
And would you be happy to pay my $443 fine if you are wrong?
From what I have been told, you can only use a mobile while driving if the phone is answered automatically usually via bluetooth and you don't need to touch the phone at any time. And hence, you don't even need a cradle.

          From Vic Roads
          "Fully licensed car drivers

except to make or receive a phone call or to use

and the phone is not resting on any part of the driver's body.

Using a phone as a navigational device/GPS while driving is prohibited unless it is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle. All other functions (including video calls, texting and emailing) are prohibited."

I presume the first condition should say "is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle and you don't need to touch it for it to operate" ?? I will call Vic Roads tomorrow and get back to you.

        • Could theoretically be fixed to any part of your car, as long as the manufacturer's instructions are followed :)

        • @abacus:

So, if you don't have a Bluetooth enabled car but still have a smartphone and a cradle, you can't take the call via speaker?

Well that rules all Ford Festivas and Ford Lasers then lol

      • He's partially right, in NSW at least:

        http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/mobilepho…

It is legal to answer and make calls whilst in a holder, or bluetooth / voice activated if not in a cradle.

However touching the phone, even if stationary on the road (i.e. red lights, not pulled over) is illegal.

Anecdotal, but I've witnessed this personally commuting on a motorcycle: A cop motorbike in front of me at a red light. I see him look over to the young P plate girl to our right and tap on her window. I look over and she's holding her phone. He signals for her to pull over at the light.

        • -1

However touching the phone, even if stationary on the road (i.e. red lights, not pulled over) is illegal.

Did you bother reading the link? Holding a phone is illegal (unless passing it to a passenger) but okay to touch it for some purposes in a cradle

5 - Can I dial a number if my mobile phone is in a cradle?

Yes, if you have a full unrestricted licence or a provisional P2 licence (green Ps). You can use a mobile phone for calls if it is secured in a mounting fixed to the vehicle. Using a mobile phone legally can still be distracting. Consider if the call is urgent and the demands of the traffic before using your mobile.

No, if you have a learner or provisional P1 licence (red Ps), you are not permitted to use a mobile phone at all while driving

That last bit may be why the P player was pulled over but it's a stupid example unless you know what happened next…could've just as easily been her dad telling her what time to be home for dinner.

    Links are down

  • 404 Page is dead.

  • Gone from Dick's site.
However, I was able to click and collect from Majura Park DS via eBay.

    It's gone, folks.

    Page doesn't exist

  • $5 @ reject shop :)

  • Beware. The side grips eventually give way and then it's history.

  • Will it fit note4 or iphone 6 plus?

    • +1

Will find out soon enough.. :S

    • Does indeed fit a Note 4 with a case.
(I think it said upto 3 3/4" wide.)

  • I picked up a $5 universal one at Fountain Gate Dick Smith. It actually looks to be exactly the same as this one

  • I picked up 2 Logitech drive+ for $12
If you see them in store nab them

They even hold my 1520 firmly through a clear case

  • The old Universal one was rubbish. Got the Universal II on a previous deal for about $12.00 and it's so good.
It's a quality made product and has been holding my GS5 daily, including my weekend trips 3 hours each way, with an hour on bumpy dirt roads each weekend.
Hasn't fallen off, phone hasn't come out, and the holder has held position firmly in all this time.
Gutted I missed this $8.00 deal. would have got a few for the parents and our second car.

  • Scored one of these from Karingal (Frankston). Will pick it up next week.

    • +1

Ooooh I'd be counting my lucky stars if DSE orders got fulfilled that easily…

  • I ordered a Sony bluetooth headphones last week and choose to Click & Collect from Blacktown store. Didn't get a 'ready for pick up' sms so went to the store today. They said due to this clearance sales, they did not go through C&C orders yet. When checked in their system (there was 50+ orders), my order was there but product was out of stock. Got a refund.

  • +1

Tried to order one with CnC to Eastgardens and appeared OK but failed at final checkout.

    • +1

Same here, got error "These items are not available. They may have been purchased already, or the listings have expired."

      • It's just means the store you selected is out of stock. I too got this error when selecting Glen Waverley but went through ok when selecting karingal.

  • I rang St Kilda and Caulfield Police stations and was told you cannot touch your phone whilst driving. She said that includes touching the green button to take the call or the red button to hang up. I will call Vic Roads tomorrow about the "or" word here which is very misleading

    • they are wrong.

      • I will ring Vic Roads tomorrow. Thanks.

        • you call vicroads for no specific purpose. They will be right but Victoria Police is giving you a fine and it's up to you to lose hours of your life in court to prove it wrong.

Call the station again and ask to speak with the Sergeant or whoever is in charge.

    • you cannot touch your phone whilst driving

      That's a load of BS.

You can indeed touch your phone for receiving and terminating calls, provided you have a full licence (not an L or P plater) and only when the phone is fixed in a commercial holder.

Did you mention to the police that the phone would be in a holder and wasn't to be held by hand?

      • Yes I did. Why don't you call a police station and see what they say. They are the ones booking people.

        • +1

          I intend to - tomorrow :)

But regardless of what they tell me, I'm going to follow what the written law states. It's up to them if they wish to book me, and similarly it's up to me to contest such a fine in court.
And once it hits court, the magistrate won't be following what Sargeant John told me once over the phone - they'll be applying the written law.

          http://www5.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/vic/consol_reg/rsrr20092…

And, as you'll find above, section 300(1)(a), section 300(1)(b) and section 300(2) of the Victorian Road Safety Road Rules 2009 explicitly provides the same information that the vicroads website provides.

And who/what would I trust more?

          (A) A copper who dishes out questionable legal advice knowing that the content of that conversation is not legally binding in any way

          Or

          (B) Victorian legislation?

          Hmmmm….

          :)

        • @KaptnKaos: Let you know Monday.

        • @abacus: I spoke to Vic Roads, and they confirmed that you can push one button on a mobile phone in a cradle to make or end a call. You cannot dial a number on a phone in a cradle. The two policeman at two different stations were wrong.

        • @abacus:

"Push one button". Does that include sliding a finger across a screen to end/answer a call?

        • @The General: I can't give advice when it might be wrong. Best to call Vic Roads. (and tape the call which is probably illegal too.)

        • @abacus:

I can't give advice when it might be wrong

          Yes you can.

        • @OzBragain: Touche, but it did come from two different police stations, st Kilda and Caulfield.

  • gone from e-bay too :(

Found stock in Sunshine, bought it and said I'd collect, got the call this morning to say they didn't have the stock and would be issuing a refund! Annoying!

  • Got the DashView Universal II from Traralgon, click and collect for $8 still.

  • has anyone got it price matched?

  • i think this is all sold out for both products now

  • Ordered it with some other stuff on the Gold Coast but my order was cancelled no stock.
I reckon over the past few years dick smith have cancelled ~50% of my orders due to stock issues.

I've tried a dozen of these kinds of air vent holders for my iPhone and they've all been awkward and then broken in a fairly short time. But I've discovered that the very simple type that has rubbery fingers that squeeze on to the air vent grills are by far the best, and also very cheap. I have one that was a better build but a bit too springy and thus harder to get the phone in and out of. But for our second car I got one of these for around a dollar and it's the best! http://www.ebay.com.au/ulk/itm/301796072582

  • Dick like their name, I was order one to pickup in store and when I went pass the store I just pop up to check is my order ready or not.
They said, they have no stock of this one and refund my money. Said the online busy to update the stock.
