Gas & Electricity in Sydney

Hi everyone,

I am recently new to the country after being abroad traveling for the last 8 years, I am currently on the coast and about to move to Sydney, can anyone recommend a decent energy supplier. I have done some digging and found that Energy Australia has some OK saver prices ( 18% electrical & 15% gas ) just wondering if I could have your input before pulling the trigger on something in the next day or so. It will be myself and girlfriend, 1 bedroom apartment and we work full time, we have no previous gas or electricity bills to go off so no idea what we are looking at. Melbourne seems like the place to be in regards to savings and customer service but I am here in NSW so it doesn't help.

Thanks,

  • You have to look at the baseline rates too - they are all different. Energy Australia is probably more expensive than another supplier with a lower discount but lower rates.

You can use something like iselect to compare plans.

Try using these comparison site, the government ones are probably best since they don't get commission

I recently switched to Powershop (electricity only) and they seem good, you can monitor your usage daily and buy credit when it's cheaper for you. Their pricing model is different to most other company so need some time/effort to understand and get used to. There is a $75 signing on bonus though and no exit fee.

  • Don't choose AGL. They are scum. That's all you need to know about them.

    • and actewAGL (if you're in the ACT). AVOID. They are a bunch of shunts.

Bastards tried to charge me $121 for 12 days of electricity usage charges. The first 5 days of which my house was vacant and this is in a 2 person place with gas heating, almost impossible to put that much electricity through the power switchboard. Initially they apologised and said the first meter reading was an "Estimate". Halved the usage bill, which was still crazy high. Then when I kept complaining they backtracked and said the meter reading were done properly the whole time.

In the end I gave up, as it was going to small claims. Not worth a day of my life for ~$40

      • Energy Australia seems like the only real option for NSW, looks like I'll go that way and hope for the best.

  • Haha legend, I won't thanks.
