Best 85c Supermarket Bread Poll

I have tried the 85c bread from Woolies, Coles and Aldi. I like Woolies 85c bread is probably the best. What do you think? I realised that some people has special dietary requirements and can't take white breads. I apologise in advance before I get flamed.

    • Please explain. :)

      • I buy bakery bread because I prefer the taste

I buy a $2 loaf from the little Asian lady in the bakery down the road. Better than any supermarket and I know it is fresh

Not a fan of the $0.85 bread, does not fill you up at all and has no taste

  • +3

    kinda prefer the $3.5 ones
after you toast the cheap bread, its like cardboard….

they're all 85c loaves of sugar with no nutritional value.

  • +1

Oh my… I am not sure if this is a case of consumers thinking "cheap, therefore poor quality". I have tried other white breads, Tip Top, etc. The only difference is that Tip Top breads seems to stay soft longer.

Not exactly the crowd response I was expecting. I would have thought 85c breads and Ozbargainers go very well together, very much like peanut butter and jam. :)

For those who has complained about the 85c breads, I would be interested to see which ones you think taste like cardboard?

It's the Yeast we can do :)

Compared to the more expensive breads, all of the 85c breads taste like cardboard. I hate the coles one (the 85c white is literally the worst bread you can buy imho) but Aldi multigrain is okay.

      • Yea.. I agree about the Coles bread. I only buy Coles bread if both Aldi and Woolies has run out of bread and I needed bread the next day. Even then, it feel like it has pretty much nothing in it, except air.

Just curious, do you keep your bread in the fridge? And how long do you keep them for? If I buy multiple, I freeze mine, and finish the loaf within 2 days.

        • Your shouldn't refrigerate bread. Not sure why but heard some science on it and it sounded good. Freezing is preferred.

I don't taste the difference much if it's just normal white bread :/ unless I want all fancy sunflower seeds, rye, etc etc then I go buy 85c

I read this as 'best 85c bread roll'

Was going to say that the Woolies bread rolls are light years ahead of Coles, (bigger, crustier) but if you are talking about the 85c bread loaves, no idea. I've never dared to buy one. I spend about $1.79 and get a nice decent loaf of bread instead.

    • Bread rolls here, too. Dough!

  • I like the $2 Coles Wholemeal.

  • The 85c bread is fine if your alternative is tip top or super sandwich maker or sunblest or some other mass market white bread. I usually have a loaf in the freezer for the day we run out of better bread.
We bake bread using the bread maker, it comes out very nice, but takes planning.
I buy the woolies bakery breads (turkish, parmesan cob and plain cob, sourdough and occasionally foccacia) when they are marked down at the end of the day.
The baker's delight loaves are pretty good too. Unsliced stays fresh longer, and you can cut nice, thick toast.

    • I buy the woolies bakery breads (turkish, parmesan cob and plain cob, sourdough and occasionally foccacia) when they are marked down at the end of the day.

I used to hunt for marked down 'Stone Baked Olive Sourdough Batards' from Coles. Damn they're good.

      • I had one of them on the weekend. It was pretty good.

  • +1

I have never eaten fresh $0.85 bakery bread. All bread is bought on the weekend and goes into the freezer or fridge until it is toasted for breakfast or lunch sandwiches on Monday. At that point all breads, from late night special $0.40 loaf to $3.50 branded bread tastes pretty much the same.

Bread goes stale faster in the fridge. Freezer is best. Google it up for the info :)

I BUY THE 85 CENT RUBBISH BREAD FULL OF SUGAR AND EVERYTHING ELSE MIXED UP. I GIVE IT
TO THE MAGPIES THEY ARE STARVING.

  • In my experience these 85c breads are at least 1 day old if not more and taste like crap as well.

  • I don't eat bread anymore, I just eat fats and protein… Mmmmmm :)

  • Since the supermarket brand bread dropped to 85 cents I have found that about 1 in 3 packs will go mouldy before their "best before" date. It was more of a problem when it first went down to this price, then got better with it happening to about 1 in 6, but now it seems to be more of a problem again.

For example, today I noticed a loaf of bread which expired yesterday had a huge circle of mould growing down the side, which would have been happening over the past few days.

Has anyone else noticed this problem? I keep the bread stored inside a closed cupboard.

  • Merged from Aldi/Coles/Woolies : 85c bread - which is better?

Probably all three are same quality but incase if someone specifically know the difference and suggest which is better amongst these?
