  • 8TB drive for $336.25 shipped:

Anyone know anything about this model or if it's any good?

    • I think these are quite slow (depending on what region the drive is being written to).

    • Wow that's cheap for $/TB. How do they compare against WD Red?

      • +1

Those archive drives are not recommended in a NAS. And IMO Seagate shouldn't be recommended for anything.

Stick with WD Reds for NAS use.

    • I've been through two of them now, as the first failed in under 2 months.

These are designed for what's known as "Cold Storage", e.g. files written to the HDD once and never retrieved or accessed for months and months at a time.
They use Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) to pack as much data as possible into each platter. This tech has only been around since 2013 and only a handful of HDDs on the market feature it. It's rather experimental and introduces some additional complexity into the writing process which leads to slower performance.

The price per GB is certainly the cheapest around, though their performance is definitely not meant for RAID arrays or media server NAS setups. Not saying you can't do either of those things with Seagate's Archive drives, but it's not ideal.

Me personally, after my experience with the first one, I'm using mine solely for offline, cold backups (meaning the HDD is unplugged and stored away for most of the time).

      • Youre scaring me, i really need a backup drive

        • If it's too good to be true…

  • For less than 10% off what a locally sourced drive can be had for, I know which option I would be taking.

  • I got two of these at ~219 USD each during the Amazon/Amex promotion. Now I'm wishing that i had gotten more :(

you can get 10% ebay at the moment (+3% cashrewards) so you can get it delivered for about $34x.
some sellers are selling at 395, others 398.

When you go black, you never go back.

  • too much prawn?

  • I was umming and arring about getting a drive for ages ended up settling on a 4tb HGST from msy and pretty happy with it so far

    • You made a better choice. That's actually a real Enterprise NAS HDD, unlike this WD Green with different firmware.
