when you wear in, you know it, compare to normal thongs which Targer/Kmart are selling, you wear it, you swear to it

    • +6

They're comfortable and very durable. Firm/flexible rubber. Not like your generic foamy/light/soft rubber thongs.

      • Alright.. what's the normal market price though?

        • +5

They retail for like $25+ depending on the type, which is laughable but even so this is a good deal. I got a couple of pairs at the last Aldi sale for like $9 and they are top notch.

        • +4

Around the $25-$30 (or $40 if you like the ones with bling) mark in most physical stores (SDS, Citybeach, etc.) or $12 at Costco or COTD but they require membership/shipping costs.

The slim metallic ones in the catalogue retail at $30 so this is a solid, easy bargain for anyone who needs comfortable and durable thongs that look nice too. Totally worth their price in terms of quality!

  • +3

$29.99 today at City Beach DFO

They decided that didn't warrant showing the price until they scanned.

    FML never again.

  • +2

I am sure they are better than The Reject Shop or KMart ones.

  • +3

I'm not arguing about the quality of the thongs but I've always wondered about the cost price and wholesale price of these mass produced footwear. When I was in Brazil the plainest you could buy was probably about 20 Reals (around $7, but I'm not a BrazilBargainer so maybe I wasn't looking hard enough). I'm no industrial economist or whatever they're called but the usual retail price seems pretty pricey for the world's most mass produced "flip-flop" that was once popular with Brazil's lowest social classes - ironically due to its low cost.

"world's most mass produced "flip-flop" that was once popular with Brazil's lowest social classes - ironically due to its low cost."
      checks out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Havaianas

      Also,some other interesting facts:
      - "Havaianas is a Brazilian brand of flip-flop sandals created by Scotsman Robert Fraser in 1962. It is currently owned by Brazilian manufacturing company Alpargata"
      - "The name Havaianas is derived from the Portuguese word for 'Hawaiians'"
      - "the pattern on the soles of the sandals is designed to resemble the straw soles of zōri."

  • +8

Knowing Aldi they will be sold out of them at 8:07am on the 19th.

  • +7

I'm still wearing flip flops I bought from Malaysia in 2013, cost $1 AUD.

Havaianas I bought for lulz for around $30 in one of those cbd vending machines in summer 2014 lasted exactly 1 year, plastic bit between toes snapped last month.

So no, I do not believe Havaianas are value for money.

    • +1

Perhaps you're just fat-footed and didn't take care of them? Everyone will have a different experience with these sorts of products.

      • +3

I thought footwear is supposed to take care of your feet not the other way around

      • I felt it was more of the plastic, the ones I bought from Malaysia actually used better plastic - the little bit of plastic actually outlasted the foam the flip flop was made of. The ones here including Havaianas always have the plastic thing pop out or snap rendering the flip flops useless.

  • This will be highlighted on the front page on the 19th, right?

  • +1

I'm not sure $12 for thongs is cheap…. these don't look anything special? What am I missing!?

    • +3

Did you read the replies to the first comment? This is discussed literally every time a Havainas deal is posted.

  • +2

For sydney siders in the area, they are $10 (except for plain black which are $15) at the havaianas store at Birkenhead point and dfo homebush when I last went two weeks ago. I got a black slim line pair with pink writing. Got hubby a regular navy blue pair with yellow/green stripe along the back.

    AlDi more convenient though.

  • +1

I find it difficult to + an Aldi deal.. They never have stock.

  • +1

I bought a pair from aldi when they last sold them and they're not the same as the standard models. They feel cheaper (ie stiffer) and the straps curl inwards which you can see in the photo of the catalogue.

It ain't like for like so I'm negging this just so people know.

    • -1

That's your opinion and unless you have some proof then you shouldn't be negging this deal. I have a couple of pairs and so does my wife. No complaints here whatsoever, they are definitely quality rubber.

      • -5

I concur with frbargain. They are over rated. If you actually USE your thongs for going to the beach, throwing them at your kids, using them as a dog toy then they don't last. If you just walk from your car to the coffee shop to sip your latte you should get 1yr use, provided it's not raining.

        • It's a thong…I'm not sure what your expectations are but these are superior rubber to any of the other offerings from Kmart etc and they're definitely still havaianas. My two pairs were different, one was the classic larger style with thick straps, the other was the newer one with thin straps. Anyway, it's a moot point since neither of your negs constitute a proper use of a neg vote. Check the wiki.

        • +3

          @Rupture:
Here's the bit FROM THE WIKI:
          Negative Vote

          Purpose:

To let others know about issues with the deal, merchant or product.

Both frbargain and goober pointed out that they think these items are poor quality, which is an "issue with the product".

If you're going to call people for supposed inappropriate neg votes, there are plenty of examples of inappropriate reasons in the wiki. Cite one.

        • +1

@Russ: Completely incorrect context you're using. What you quoted is a reference to what the PURPOSE OF a negative vote is. It is not the reason for issuing one. Here is the part from the wiki that is actually relevant, stating the applicable REASONS for a negative vote:

          Cheaper price elsewhere:
-Mention store or URL and price making sure to include shipping.

          Defective product:
          -The product has been recalled
-Major issue with product in that it doesn't work the way it should.

          Major issue with retailer:
          -Didn't receive previous purchase. Example
-Shipping time exceeding expected wait. Example

As none of these apply, then the negative vote is not applicable. Cheers

        • -1

          @Rupture:
Wrong again, those are EXAMPLES, not an exclusive list.

        • @Russ: If we're going to make assumptions and make up our own theories, then where does it say 'examples of appropriate uses of a negative vote'? It doesn't, therefore we can deduce that it must be an exclusive list. You can see these reasons listed at the very top of the page under the negative vote column too. The only thing that comes close here is 'defective product', but that is an insane stretch to claim that Aldi is selling a defective product. I for one can tell you the pairs I bought are great. You've also completely ignored the fact you quoted the wiki out of context but let's let that slide I guess?

        • -1

          @Rupture:

Not an exclusive list, or the wiki page would have the heading "voting rules" not "voting guidelines".

If you think I am incorrect, click the "report" button beside my comment, and report it to a mod. Then we'll both have a definitive answer.

      • -4

I'm negging the deal to bring it to people's attention that it's highly likely that $12 doesn't get you the same thing as a standard $30 thong.

I have had several pairs of havvies and the ones from aldi are clearly inferior so I never wear them.

      • -1

        "proof" haha, get a grip.

        • -1

I want forensic analysis on those things please lol

    • +1

Yeah I have to agree with you, the ones from the last Aldi sale definitely weren't the same quality :/

    • i actually prefer the stiffer ones because they last longer. i have both types. the one with soft straps have stretched out that they are pretty much unwearable now.

    • frbargain, i found the straps also to curl inwards.. why is that? I've never had these issues buying havs elsewhere

  • +3

I believe Costco sell these for around $12 aswell. There is a difference in quality.

    • -3

Yep Costco had them for $12 ages ago. Didn't warrant posting as they really are not that good.

  • Not sure about colour/patterns variety @ Aldi but I generally find Haivana thongs near the entrance of Costco Auburn for about the same price (give or take a dollar). The downside is that the range there is quite limited.

  • is this nationwide?

  • +2

Hmm the quality of these thongs are so-so.

The ones I bought last year, I had to trim an 'excess' part of the thong as it started to dig into my skin (it shouldn't be there).

I'm not sure if Aldi is selling 'seconds' or perhaps I got a bad one. But if you're looking at buying, make sure to physically inspect the thong at the store and check!

  • Exactly same price at COSTCO Auburn, on sale now. Though obviously you need to be a member. It is the first item as you enter.

  • +1

great deal, wish I saw it before I spent 5 x $30 on them from city beach for Christmas presents!!

  • I guess these are a deal for havaina wearers.

I'm to cheap to pay $11 for branded rubber.

$3 specials are the models for me. 1 black, 1 brown, 1 blue all for $9.

    That's deal!

  • -3

Pointless… All the sale obsessed, cheap Mums will be gaurding them with their hips and backsides. I'd rather pay an extra $15 from a surf shop than have to deal with Aldi and it's clientele.

  • -1

I bought a pair of generic ones from Big W in 2009 for $7.50. They're still perfectly fine as my daily use home slippers. I'm not sure if these branded ones are really what they're hyped up to be.

  • While we're talking about thongs, does anyone know any thongs with good grip at the bottom?

I find it so easy to slide if the ground is remotely wet, especially on the zebra crossing.

  • Just so you know, last year it was around 8 bucks at Aldi. Increase in price is a very unAldi thing to do. I missed that deal and hoping to get it again this year, but for this price.. Nah

As people mentioned above, there will be out of stock quite soon, if you lucky you will get your size, but wont have much choice on color (and vice versa). You want black, you ll have brown lol good luck all
