Technical bit of info:
This hard drive comes with formatted for use on Mac OS X operating system (Apple Mac Computers). It is entirely possible however to reformat the Hard Drive to the "FAT32 file system", which is compatible across Mac OS X an Windows. This can be done locally on a Mac OS X computer, or by downloading a small piece of Windows compatible software from the WD website (http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=201&sid=…).

  • nothing special. 100$ would be a good deal

So what's the point of formatting it for Mac computers if FAT32 supports OSX and Windows?

    • FAT32 has file size limitations and it can't be journaled or used for Time Machine backups.

      • Meld: There is no need to reformat it to fat32 for Time Machine backups. The formatting that is already on the drive will be fine for Mac.

Broden: When Western Digital send the drive, it formatted to a Mac only format, not FAT32. All we were saying is that IF YOU WANT IT FOR WINDOWS, it can be reformatted to fat32 which is cross-compatible.

have seen cheaper for just normal usb 500gb drives. there is no need to get a "mac" hdd

    • +1

      Agreed.

    • any hard drive that was cheaper was either a 3.5" external drive (larger and not usb powered) OR not Western Digital.
The cheapest on Static Ice for the same Western Digital Mac model is $148 + shipping. For a non-Mac Western Digital model its $152 + shipping.

  • LOL classic post, normally $99 or less but for our MAC users $38 more! At least it's in the spirit of apple!

  • this is and was not a good deal
