Air con or Fan? Happy to buy second hand too

Hi,

Looking for a A/C or fan for a small room. For A/C, I do not want The room dimensions are approximately 3 x 3 x 2.5 (L x W x H in metres).

I've been kind of put of a/c as a DJs staff member told me that A/Cs are very annoying to setup (requires a tube to hang out the window, basically more effort than it is worth). I do recall there being A/Cs that just require some water and it'll emit cold air though. I think that would be ok.

That leaves me with fan as the alternative. I've had a look at this, Sunbeam FA7250.

My criteria:

  • Relatively portable (i.e. not too difficult to carry between rooms)
  • <$100
  • Good spread of air (i.e. oscillation/able to blow a large area)
  • Able to generate heat? (probably unrealistic with a $100 budget)
  • Not too loud
  • Relatively energy efficient (I would imagine fan > air con for this?)
  • Intended for long-term use (3 years+)

The one I linked to above is good because it appears to have good coverage in terms of cooling, is not too heavy and doesn't seem to be too loud. I did have a look in-store and I liked the fact that, unlike other tower fans, the tower itself didn't seem too flimsy. I find a lot of these tower fans feel very flimsy - i.e. when you shake it a little bit, the tower feels like it's very wobbly and very likely to fall.

I am even happy to be swayed into increasing my budget, but I would need to be convinced as to why it would be worthwhile to do so.

I am also happy to buy a second hand one if anyone has one to sell?
Located in Sydney!

Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance :)

  • You wont find an AC for under $100 new. They are big, loud and bulky. Do required you to drain the water out every few days and putting a pipe out the window for the excess hot air. Having said that AC is infinitely better, it is actually going to cool the room, a fan will just blow the already hot air at you. I used a portable one until I had split system put in place, pain yes but it was cool.

  • Fans on gumtree $0-$10

    • or dick smith on clearance

Relatively energy efficient (I would imagine fan > air con for this?)

You're correct, aircon will cool the room down quicker, but they cost more to run.
They are bulkier than fans and aren't as portable.

  • You could get a huge block of ice and get a fan to blow the cold moist air your way.

    • +2

Or you could just sit on the block of ice and put your fan money towards more ice

  • basic evaporative cooler.
Fan blower water of some material(cloth or so).
They should be less than $100.
But you need to keep air flowing (window n door open) otherwise you get build up of humidity, saturation and eventually you have a nice sauna.

    • Will an evaporative system work in Sydney? I thought it would be too humid to be effective.

A fan should be enough for all but the hottest days. Wasn't too any years ago there was no choice for AC

  • Thanks for all the input guys.

I went with an "Evaporative Cooler" from Kmart for $79
Used it on two nights so far. Not bad I guess, but it doesn't quite feel "cool" enough. I'll try adding more ice cubes to it to make it even cooler. Too early to say how good it is, but so far it seems decent enough.
