Vornado Air Circulators - Are They Worth It?

Looking at buying a new fan for work whilst tiling. Having read a fair few reviews, most seem to be pretty positive but some suggest that these are no better than a High Velocity floor fan.

Wondering if it's worth shelling out the extra $100 or so? It's the 660 modeli'm looking to buy.

I would say yes. The Wirecutter (The Sweethome) has it as one of its best fans: http://thesweethome.com/reviews/best-fan/

JB Hifi regularly has demo models in its stores. Although the JB website has only white models, I've seen black ones in store, and sometimes the 600 model is under $200.

Personally I like them because they pack a huge punch, and do it very quietly.

    • Both those sites appear to be Advertorial sites to me.

  • I have a small ~30cm one from a few years ago.. personally don't notice any difference to a regular fan apart from the lack of a swing function.
In summary, save your coin and buy a regular model (ideally with large blades so you can run it slower and quieter for the same airflow) with swing function.

  • Yes also don't notice much difference. It does "push" more air around on the higher settings compared to a regular fan. If you are just putting fan in front of you then better to use a normal fan. I found I'm cooler with the fan in front than it sitting on the side "moving" air around.

Also just for fun it uses more electricity than a regular fan. So it basically costs more to buy and use. You do get long warranty but found that I've run a cheapo fan on most of the time no problems for many years and is easily replaceable.

  • We have one of the smaller ones at home, it does the job and if you point it at a corner and crank it to maximum it gets the air moving quite nicely. We have used ours to keep the air in the bedroom circulating on the warmer nights. Ours does feel very robust and well built as well.

Compared to other fans, they dont swing, they can be noisy and are on the more expensive side of things.

  • These are not fans, they are air circulators. They will work if you position, aim and use them right.

    • The fan blades on my Vornado look identical to those in my cheapo Woolies fan.
The motor may be more powerful, I haven't checked.

The only vague difference is the plastic grille has wider fins which might assist to steer the air in one direction (although I'd like to see an aeronautical engineer's take, cause I half suspect the extra fin length will just introduce more surface turbulence and result in less directional airflow than a fan with a thin-wire grille).

  • We got a Kambrook KFA624 fan. This works really well at moving the air around, even on low. It costs about $89 RRP. We liked it so much we bought a second one for downstairs. (We got the second one for 20% at a Myer sale).

  • Sorry for reviving an old thread.

OP, which one did you buy at the end?
