  • I'm in the market to buy some perfume under $50. How exactly do I make said purchase with no knowledge of the field and no ability to smell anything before I buy it?

    • +2

Go in store, there's usually testers available. Plus the shop staff often have a good knowledge of what's popular!

    • You can get samples (sprayed strip of card) free in-store, or you can purchase sample sprays (2ml.bottle) on ebay ~$7 delivered.

    • Tends to be a bit of a personal thing.. perfume that some people will like, others won't. However, I did buy some perfume today from Chemist Warehouse - "BVLGARI" (currently $49, the Jasmine one) that my wife hinted that she liked.

If you want to learn about fragrances, visit http://www.fragrantica.com

Keep in mind reviews of fragrances on Fragrantica are highly subjective; so always test in store if you're not sure.

    • Good luck! What I do is have a list of things including perfumes and then snatch them up as soon as they go on sale.

I've never had an issue with the Chemist Warehouse fragrances, just stay away from the ones that are not behind glass, they're usually cheap and rubbish. Good place to check out is basenotes.com. But take it with a grain of salt, just like my recommendations. :-P What smells good to you, may not to others and vice versa. Personally I would buy the smaller 40/50ml bottles and you will be able to get 2 for the $50.

Anyway, here's my recommendations in order of preference.

Terre D'Hermes - Not available on the site, so might be hard pressed to find it in store. But at $53 this is a steal. This is just quality in a bottle, has an orange earthy smell. Lasts as long as it takes to have your next shower!

Versace Pour Homme - Another quality fragrance and cheap. Women love this one as well…..if you are after compliments that is. Probably lasts around 8-12 hours which is good.

Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme - Great summer fragrance. Again, this lasts as long as it takes to have your next shower!

Paco Rabanne 1 Million - Love or hate, you may want to have a sample 1st. I love it and so do the ladies. :-P Lasts around 8-12 hours.

Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male - Another popular one. Not too dissimilar to 1 Million, but can't go wrong with this one either. Lasts around 8-12 hours.

Versace The Dreamer - Just quality.

Here's the next rung down on quality.

Versace Eau Fraiche - Great Summer fragrance. Smells like the beach! Cheap!
Rochas Man - Similar to the Dreamer, probably better in Winter.
Joop! Jump - Cheap! This is great quality and a good all round scent.
David Beckham Homme - At $11 you can't go wrong. A lighter version of Terre D'Hermes at a fraction of the cost. Doesn't last as long of cousre, but best of the cheapies.

I need to use up the ton I already have ;( Still got some CK from last years sale.

Is it only me or others find it as well that perfumes bought from Chemist warehouse usually wears off quickly and after few months you smell more of alcohal than fregrence itself ?

Same experience with CK Be and Hugo Boss Energise.

I had both in past but bought from Myer and those lasted for way long.

Most the fragrance sold at Chemist Warehouse (esp. men's fragrance) are EDT which is less concentrated than EDP. Also, sometimes the stock do sit on the shelves for a long time depending on how popular they are. The stock is genuine though.

ck be is well known for having terrible longevity

    • You also build up a resistance to smells if you smell them daily.

    • i feel the same..Dunhill pure and Hugo boss Soul, the one i bought from airport were excellent in terms of longevity but the one from chemist warehouse wore off quicky.

  • 10% off on = normal price :P

    • exactly

  • great, more chinese buying all health care products……… leaving us with nothing

    • Interesting thing, there's an asian travel shop (as in they do bookings) but on the side they sell Australian milk and formula.

      • because of this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Chinese_milk_scandal and australia has rigorous testing to ensure our milk and baby formula is safe to consume and is heavily regulated

        • True and look at stocks from following companies

Blackmores - after announcing they are entering this market.

          A2M - doubled in a month.

          Balamese - done really well.

More and more companies are entring this market that should help with supply.

Problem is only certain brands are popular especially Caricare, A2 Platinum and Balamese. Products from nestle and heinz can always be found in stock.

  • If you purchase for more than $50, you can use the voucher from the entertainment book for $10.
