Download Speed in Less than 1MBPS

I have purchased TP-LINK TD-W8980 N600 Modem and installed it today. I noticed that I am only getting download speed of 1MBPS.

I am currently with TPG and I understand that my internet speed should be far more than mere 1MBPS.

What I am doing wrong and how to fix this issue?

  • call tpg

  • I think it might just be today, being Christmas, that everything is under load resulting in lower speeds. I'm trying to download games on Steam at the moment, earlier I was getting 13.1MB/s, now I'm getting 29KB/s. :p

  • In Berowra, it's always less than 1MBPS. Heck if it was even that, it would e awesome :D

  • welcome to australia.

Your internet speed depends entirely on your distance from the exchange. I am far from the exchange, and get 500kB/s. Totally normal.

What's your modem stats? What speeds were you getting before?

  • What's the house cabling like? is it cat5e? or the original phone cable?
How many phones do you have in the home? do they all have filters?
How far is the exchange from your house?
Are your neighbors having issues? remember telstra own all the cabling from the houses to the exchange in most areas.
Are you using wifi or cable? if on wifi how far away from the modem are you?

Jump on the tpg forum and ask for help it will save time sitting on hold.

  • Sounds like this is a new issue associated with OPs new modem install. Aside from above questions, what was your speed before installing this modem?

Suggest also googling the modem model no and TPG and settings. Make sure you got all of this setup properly.

  • I had problems with speed earlier in the year. I have been with TPG for many years and the norm was around 11,000-12,000 Kbps. I started getting around 8,800 Kbps, and then dropped to as low as 1,800 Kbps so phoned TPG after vigorous testing of connections and cables in home. Long story short, they blamed my old router which I doubted was the problem, but decided to buy a new one anyway to eliminate possibility. Minimal improvement, still had intermittent speed problems, TPG sent their technicians out who tried various things but indicated problem was in the street - Telstra. TPG then blamed problem on my wireless on new router and told me to connect by cable, then when I phoned to advise this was not the problem they told me the cable I was now connected with was the problem and switch to wireless. Went around in circles for months before giving up after they tweaked the connection at their end to reduce speed for more reliability. I have been on around 8,200 Kbps since then. Apparently they will not ask Telstra to fix a problem which cant be pinned down to nearer than "somewhere in the street"!

BTW, I bought the TP-Link W8960 router modem. Not the easiest to set up if following instructions, had to reset to default settings a few times before getting it right. One problem I later realized I had also had was that when PC went into sleep mode it would cause new router to reboot - being a complication in trying to sort out TPG problem. This was resolved by making some setting adjustments that I came across when googling the problem.
