  • Hello. Whats up?

      The sky.

      • Haha, that's an unusual answer and made me laugh!! Took me about 3 seconds to understand that hahaha:)

        • +14

Its jan 2nd now. I think you should stop drinking.

        • @Gimli: At least until the next alcohol deal comes up :)

    • Occurrences of the cliche and unfunny "the sky" answer in response to the question "What's up?"

    • +13

      My cholesterol :-(

      • Better or worse after christmas?

        • Worse

    • +4

      My blood pressure

    • Last I checked there was a whole universe above my head.. Ohhhh there it is again.

      • There's one below your head too.

    • +22

      With respect, that's rather harsh.

OP, as a Mechtronics Engineer, what do you actually do?

      • +18

My current role is in a small company that services the rail industry. At the moment I get thrown into all sorts of projecrs, lots of pcb design for industrial electronics to replace obsolete modules, CADing up enclosures for manufacture. And a lot of power electronics commissioning.

        • +2

and in laymans terms? not useful explaining something to someone using acronyms the first time round.

        • +1

          @Thenarrator:

He uses 3D software to make designs of tech stuff - PCB is the green circuitry boards you see. CAD is the software he uses (AutoCAD).

        • @DrStinge:
And CAD is computer assisted design

    • +4

Didn't know you had be famous to start an AMA.You might actually learn something nxr.

    • +33

This is an engineer that isnt stacking shelves at coles. He has made it in my opinion.

    • +2

      :D

    • Probably about as special as you oh except it's almost certain they have better social skills.

    • +4

Everyone has something special, life stories, experiences to share. Saying that just made you less special.

    • +1

With respect, you're nothing special. No questions.

This from a guy who takes condiments from fast food outlets in order to save money.

  • Hi Notcreative…can you give us some insight into "mechtronics engineering".

    • +3

A lot of small companies who cannot afford three separate engineers, electronics mechanical and software are choosing to employ mechatronics engineers for most of the work that is not super specialised.

      • where do you work and are they hiring?

I studied mechanical engineering with a minor in mechatronics

  • +3

    Hey, Notcreative!
I recently suggested this career to my son, who's 10 yrs old and very creative :), also interested in physics. I was only going by the title of your profession, rather than any factual or knowledge base, of what it actually entails.Would be very interested to hear , how is it that you came to choose this career and how it's going so far.

    • +4

I have had a fascination with electronics, machines and tools since a young age. My parents supported this by letting me open up old gadgets, buying me radio shack kits and mechano sets. When I was choosing a uni course I was finding it hard to select a single discipline and this seemed like a good way out. At the moment I am finding a lot of the industry unaware of the existence of my kind, since I hardly see any jobs posted. But I see the need rising since we are comfortable with a lot more than a pure mechanical or a pure software engineer would be. Don't get me wrong, those two disciplines have a lot more knowledge in their respective fields but sometimes a person is required who can combine the two.

  • +1

I have a friend who is also fairly newly married and a mechatronics engineer but he lives in Perth. He is finding it hard to find mechatronics jobs locally.
Any suggestions for job opportunities for my friend?

    • +1

I am a mechatronics engineer working and living in Perth. I suggest your friend to focus on process control (systems) career since it is the only relevant industry I can think of. Since I was not specialised in any of the engineering field, I had a difficult start, but I have been working in process control in a mining industry for the last 10 years.
The mining and manufacturing (or even brewery) industries have evolved a lot with the Operational Technology (OT) start to becoming a necessity and I reckon a mechatronics engineer skill set is very well suited for the job.

      • I agree with chazfg, no one seems to be looking for mechatronics engineers per se but there are a lot of roles that we are well suited for. Ask your friend to look at engineering jobs and see what position descriptions he likes the look of. Its going to be hard but if he fits the role, he may be able to convince the employer that his skill set is a good match as they may be used to just posting adds for electronics or systems engineers and not including mechatronics engineers for these positions.

    • If he knows anything about 'Systems Engineering' and is an Australian Citizen with no criminal record (pre-requisites for a Security Clearance), have a look at the Defence Industry. When the government gets around to announcing the winners for the massive projects to build new submarines and armoured vehicles, the winning prime contractors will be desperate to staff up with good engineers.

      • I have five positions going at present in Albury Wodonga for a Defence contractor that does some interesting stuff. Must be tertiary qualified Aust citizen and able to pass a Defence security check. PM me for details. Cheers, Dan.

  • +5

Isn't it "Mechatronics" ? How can you spell your own discipline wrongly !?!?! It is a sin !!!

    • +11

I guess you will have to call the bikies on me

      • You know im just kidding…! cheers

    • I thought that, stereotypically, engineers were bad at spelling…

  • Hows it hanging man?

    • +1

Enjoying the new year break. Saw the Melbourne fireworks in real life for the first time today.

  • +5

What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

    • +2

      42.

    • +1

Air speed? Wouldn't that be a spit then?

    • +3

      African or European swallow?

  • +4

i think you mistaken ozbargain for reddit

    • +12

      Wait, Reddit has eneloop bargains?

  • Hi I am a mechanical engineer that is graduating next February. I am also from Perth

I am just wondering, what are the differences between mechatronic and mechanical engineering in your company?

Also, do u have any vacancy for mechanical engineers in your company? :P

    • We don't have any mechanical engineers as we mostly do power electronics, the mechanical aspects of my degree are useful for designing enclosures, reverse engineering obsolete parts, designing the hardware for new electronic components and things like working out the thermal performance. All of this does get validated by third parties when required.

Sorry, we are a very small team of engineers and our work mostly electronics and electrical :)

    Go Ahead, AMA

    My name ain't Ama, buddy.

    • +3

      don't call me buddy, guy

      • +4

        Don't call me guy, friend

        • +3

          Don't call me friend, dude

        • +3

          Don't call me dude, man

        • +1

@Marbel: Don't call me man, Pal

  • +10

    Which Hello did you mean?

    Is it:

A- Hello, is it me you're looking for

B- Hello from the other sideeeee

    • +2

I think B, not a good enough singer for A

  • +4

why did you get married so early on? I'm 25 as well but dont even wanna go near the idea of marriage.

    • +8

Don't know about @notcreative, but when I met a beautiful girl who also happened to love me, it was in a word AWESOME. Been married over 10+ years and they've been great years.

    • +4

      In short, what Member0230 said.

  • +1

So tell me about you career to date, how hard was it finding your first real job.

Also what is your current salary? ( I want to get a feel of how "good" the industry is )

    • +1

Started with this company as an intern while at uni. Offered me a job after I graduated. Been with them a little over 2 years currently in the 60-70k region.

      • If you know, what kind of salaries do guys with more experience get? Or what are you expecting in your late 20s and 30s?

  • How do you juggle:
    -Full-time engineering job
    -Part-time study
    -Helping parents with side business
    -Being married
-Living with parents while being married (which may cause friction)

Do you go through all things every day, or set aside time for each?

TLDR: how do you manage your time doing all these things?

    • +3

I really enjoy the work, so the time passes by pretty easy.

With the part time study, I listen a lot of lectures as audio driving to work. Try to pick subjects (within reason) with not too many contact hours. Still the last 4 four weeks of the semester are pretty rough with no social life! Work is quite flexible with me going to classes provided I stay back to make up my hours on other days

Helping with the business happens mostly when I am on semester break and my wife plays a big part in the contribution too.

We are on the same page with most of this so there is a lot of understanding, we both are happy to work a little hard in the initial years.

Its tricky, but its a matter of adjustment. We all communicate openly so its not too bad. Sometimes the wheels fall off but its nothing that cannot be put back.

TLDR - Social life suffers, lots of planning, everyone helps out.

  • West ham or Liverpool?

    • I don't follow sports, I'm really bad at keeping track.

  • I am starting university this year with no definite major in my mind yet for Engineering. What are the major differences in Electrical/Computer Systems and Mechatronics Eng in terms of creating electrical devices or software for such (what I'm interested in). Some more insight into the daily life of a mechatronic eng can help. Thanks

    • +5

From the way the course was structured while I was studying, there are a lot of common subjects between the two degrees you mentioned. In mechatronics we did a little more CAD stuff and subjects like structural mechanics and machine dynamics that are purely mechanical. CAD is used a lot for modelling and manufacturing hardware etc.

If you're interested in software, I guess both courses will have a fair bit of that. In our course for eg. we had projects that involved building robots that could pick-up specific coloured objects while navigating a maze. There was a lot of software involved, at the same time the programmers in the team had to understand the limitations of the hardware they were working with.

I am not sure how the course is setup for the Electrical and Computer systems degree so I wont be able to compare them in better detail.

Daily life - I could be doing any of the following depending on what the project requires.

      1. Laying out a PCB and sending off to manufacture
      2. 3D scanning an old part to re-manufacture for a customer (20+ year parts where the OEM no longer exists)
      3. Upgrading a subsystem for an entire fleet of rolling stock vehicles ( power inverters, battery chargers etc. )
      4. Writing condition reports and investigations.
      5. Managing a production run of an electronic product ( pcbs, enclosures, test certificates, wiring, packaging, labeling)
      6. Programming a micro controller.
      7. Repairing a traction drive or any small component the client gives us.

Choose what you can see yourself doing every day. Enjoying what you do is very important.

      • +1

Thank you, it's hard to come across actual information of specific experences that different Engineers have especially just in highschool. Your information is valued I will think back once I learn the basics and have to choose my major.

  • +2

(Eng. Q.) What would you do if a woodchuck couldn't chuck wood?

  • +1

serious question, how do you make love when you live in your parents house? awkward not being able to make any noise etc

    • +2

Its a big house, we are on different levels and we choose to believe that takes care of the problem.

      • +2

What's the cubic capacity of your house?

        • I was in half a mind to actually work that out but I'm a little lazy today.

        • +10

@notcreative: Why not just seal your house (including all drains), note your water meter, then leave your taps on. When your house is full, check the water meter again. A - B = C

        • +12

@muncan: He would never have thought of that. He's not creative.

        • @eug:

          LOL wp

        • @muncan:

          That was great.

        • @muncan: you forgot to account for items in the house and leakage. A - B - D +(leakage) = C

        • @notcreative: I assumed you'd wait till your folks were out!

  • +4

    HELLO 25 YEAR OLD ENGINEER
LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU ARE 26 I WILL BAKE YOU A LOVERLY CAKE
    EAST WEST LINK CAKE
    SOUNDS GOOD TO ME
PS I WILL GIVE A PIECE TO SHOVEL READY DAN

    • +17

      wtf

    • "LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU ARE 26 I WILL BAKE YOU A LOVERLY CAKE"
Not sure if you trying to advertise bakery or just flirting

    • +1

      Underrated comment

  • why has their never been an order or australia given to a school cleaner or any cleaner other than Ian Kiernan(who really isn't a cleaner), who made this their lifes work?

  • You must have a good relationship with your parents to live with them. Do you have to pay them rent? What does your wife think about this living arrangement ?

    • +2

Yes its pretty good. We don't pay rent but buy stuff for the house, groceries etc (lots of ozbargains!). Wife and I both know we can get some serious savings happening this way. It gets a little hard for her sometimes since she moved out of home at a young age and is a pretty independent person.

  • +7

Is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

  • how many years of experience, what is title of your current role and how much salary you get.

  • +11

There is an engineer I know, he is always backing up his car when driving instead of driving straight usually like normal people.

    He is a reverse engineer.

    • +3

      ….dad?

  • ……..and "AMA" means ?

  • +1

What's your favourite bargain to date?

    • +2

Got an LG 3D 55 inch for around 800 last year. That was pretty good. An inspiron 15 7000 for a similar price. They both were pretty good vfm
