Big IPS 144hz G-Sync Monitor

My beloved Dell U3014 30" monitor has died in the ass.

I am pretty disappointed as it is only just over 3 years old and hence out of warranty.

Not what I expected from a Dell :(

Anyway I guess a replacement is required.

I am not going to go smaller than 30", and I guess I should look at the following:

  • IPS panels
  • 144hz capable
  • G-Sync capable (I am an Nvidia man)

The field of monitors is pretty slim - The obvious choice being the Acer Z35
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/34211

But $1799 for an Acer!
Ugh Acer in my mind equates to cheap price, cheap quality, mum and dad user hardware.

Should I look at say a 55" LED TV instead?

    has died in the ass

Not a good way to die

  • will be luck of the draw to get a panel that has 0 issues

also at that size you need to go in store to see if you notice the pixels at such low density 2560 x 1080 after using your dell which is a bit higher

but yeah pay that for gsync otherwise the BenQ XR3501 is a cheaper 144hz alternative without gsync

  • Its not out of warranty. https://youtu.be/uE8BB-ioNRw

Its suppose to last what you expected it to. I expect a monitor to last many years. I have 2x 10 year old monitors still working in my house and most of the tv's / displays I have over my life have last a very long time as well…

    • Love this video. I got xb321hk Acer beast IPS 32'' G-SYNC. Guess what. Small poke/hole at the centre right down the screen. Quality ???? It is a brand new. I have to return it but replacement could not be filled as no stock from supplier for more than a month. :(

Don't think that is possible at this point in time, the largest 144Hz G-Sync monitor I know of is 27". I believe there is a 30" G-Sync but that was 60Hz only and 4k.

    • Acer do two big monitors that are G-Sync

      The 34" X34 is only 100hz
      http://www.digitalstar.com.au/acer-predator-x34-34-curved-34…

and the 35" Z35 is up to 200mhz and its a VA panel

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Acer-Predator-Z35-Curved-35in…

      • Hmm… I stand corrected, although a 30" IPS with 144Hz and G-Sync is something I have yet to see myself.

The Z35 was also $1308 after $100 coupon (~$491 cheaper than StaticIce) at DSE yesterday. Today it's $1382. Keep an eye out for another $100 off coupon if you're interested in this model.

        • Maybe check the box and at least the Styrofoam in store for any sign of damage.. the (first) one I got is/was damaged. Time to do a in-store RA & if rejected, time to go to PayPal or my credit card dispute =)

        • @Lukian: One store (one particular staff member) was nice enough to swap it over on the spot for me. Good luck finding anything other than display stock left (which might be nicely discounted - winkwinknudgenudge!).

  • isnt a Z35 a VA panel? I dont think there is an IPS panel in the market that meets all your stated requirements.

    • It is VA. But for gaming there isn't a huge amount of difference (in quality). They're both considerably better than TN?

      • I have not used a VA before, but it is supposed to be an in between.

I have a dual monitor setup with one TN (144hz) and IPS (60hz). TN gives a slight tint of yellow when viewed at certain angles. But if you look at the monitor straight on, there is almost no difference to an IPS. IPS has a true 10 bit color and the TN is 8 bit (true 6 bit overdrive to 8 bit). Some people claim that they can tell the difference, but I for sure found very minimal noticeable difference when gaming. As for response time, TN is 1ms gtg and IPS is 5ms. Unless you are some CS pro, an average user cannot tell which is which for sure. In fact the one that made all the difference to me is 144hz. It makes everything smooth as butter.

I think IPS is overrated unless you need extremely accurate color reproduction for professional graphic work (not to even mention $$$). For gaming, I would take 144hz, lower response times (of course) and G-sync if you got the dough to spend over the type of panel.

For people who absolutely dont want TN, VA is the next best choice.

        • Response times under the refresh rate is all you need. Naturally higher refresh rate to a certain level is beneficial to fast paced games. At least until you hit a maximum of 1/200th of a second (200Hz) which is fighter-pilot level visual identification.

        • @Lukian:

Lol if anyone needs 200hz to play a game, means that the person is seeing everything in matrix like slow-mo at 60hz which obviously that is how fighter pilot see things.

        • @KaTst3R:

          slow-mo at 60hz

Probably not, AFAIK the only game that has its speed affected by FPS is Fallout 4… the game speeds up the higher the frames. Otherwise, all games should run at about the same speed regardless of the FPS, it would just look more fluid.

        • @ProjectZero:

Sorry I was actually being sarcastic and joking !!! But good point you brought up there with regards to Fallout. Another exception is game emulators, they run at super speed when your fps and refresh rate is about 60.

        • @KaTst3R: lol zoom! went right over my head XD

Good point about the emulators though, wonder how much easier to play now that monitors can actually refresh at 120hz… i remember playing emulators that was going at 120fps but stuttered like mad because I couldn't see some of the frames lol

  • You got unlucky there with the Dell, always used Dell monitors & they are solid. You should perhaps try your luck with a couple of support calls they might look at it if its just out of warranty as its a premium monitor. Worse case you could still probably get a few hundred selling it as busted.

  • The Z35 from Acer seems overpriced since a 34" LG that does AMD's equivalent of G-Sync (Freesync?) is only $700

    https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&…

Lol would be better off to buy the LG and a new video card - also then I wouldnt need to run a heater in winter thanks to AMD :)

    • From everything I've read, Freesync is massively underwhelming and not worth the effort. Sadly this means that Nvidia can charge a large premium on G-Sync equipment due to lack of any real competition.

Also I wouldn't be spending $1800-1900 on a G-sync ultra-wide monitor unless you're really serious about gaming at those crazy resolutions. This will also require a serious gaming rig to back it up (GTX 980 or 980Ti+ GPU wise).

      • The U3014 is a 2560 x 1600 monitor so resolution wise, these 35" Acers would actually be a step down.

        I have an overclocked 4gb GTX770 and play at 2560x1600 in BF4.

        • For the Z35 yes, but the X34 is 3440 x 1440 which would be a few more pixels to draw. Also games like Witcher 3 and GTA 5 set to high may require a bit more grunt with eye candies set to max.

Personally I see the X34 as a far better choice over the Z35.

        • @Cobalt_:

X34 is only 100hz and 1" smaller. But higher res…

Is G-SYnc up to 200hz noticably better than G-Sync up to 100hz?
Having only had non-G Sync 60hz monitors until now, I don't know the answer

        • @GreatWhiteHunter:

This video explains the technology quite well:
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMsRjSOLw3M

Basically the point of G-sync is to provide a visually tear and stutter free experience while allowing you to crank up the game details and effects. Without tearing and stuttering you get a much more fluid experience and the overall frame rates don't matter so much as long as they remain above the 40+ FPS range.

If you are playing games at 100 - 200 FPS, chances are you are not pushing your system and not getting the most out of your graphics card. If this is the case then you're just burning money by buying a G-sync monitor in the first place. The fact they even produce a 200Hz G-sync monitor just means they are trying to capture the e-peen market who don't really understand how the technology is supposed to work.

Have you tried arguing your rights under the ACL for a repair/replacement?
    https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

Warranties are separate from your automatic consumer guarantees. The consumer guarantees which apply regardless of any warranties suppliers sell or give to you, apply for a reasonable time depending on the nature of the goods or services. This means consumer guarantees may continue to apply after the time period for the warranty has expired.

For a monitor which was sold for over $1500, one would reasonably expect to get significantly more than 3 years use out of it. Furthermore if the monitor died as a result of a common fault/defect (think capacitor plague as an example) then the manufacturer is obligated to rectify it.

Downside of arguing for your rights under the ACL, you will have to put up a bit of a fight and potentially lodge a complaint with the ACCC if the retailer is unwilling to repair/replace your items.

    • The monitors power button and other control buttons stopped working.

I couldn't switch it off and I couldn't change any of the settings.

When I called Dell technical support they asked me to unplug it - I said "Are you sure" they said "YES"

I did it, and it wouldn't switch back on!

LOL I knew that would be the case.

Anyway they are going to sort something out for me I think.

      • Also for what it's worth I think the whole monitor issue traces back to a faulty Displayport cable.

Don't ask me how, but it seems a faulty display port cable can make Dell U3014 monitors unresponsive to presses of it's power/menu buttons…

Whilst this isn't a 30" monitor… I believe this would be the best choice IMHO.

    http://www.mwave.com.au/product/asus-rog-swift-pg279q-27-wqh…

    Asus PG279Q Swift $1199, 165hz g-sync with IPS 2560x1440. Missing 160 pixels vertically and 3"

    • That has some nice specs but the size is just too small.

      Want BIG not little.

My gf says 3 inches matters a lot…

Also $1199 for a 27" - my God Nvidia and manufacturers are gouging on G-Sync…

      • yeah seriously… although I personally use a U2713HM atm, so I would love to get my hands on the ASUS lol
