  • As an aside, I got glucose test strips a while back and used them to test Lactose-free milk I made myself by crushing the lactase tablets.
It does work but overall it's not full conversion, can sour milk, and saves maybe 30% cost.

    thanks op got 11

  • They should hand these out with maccas happy meals..

And the fruit you buy, the pasta, the brown rice, vegetables too, they all contain carbohydrates. Diabetics cannot process carbohydrates, it's not just about glucose or sugar. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, it is not caused by eating happy meals or junk food. Type 2 diabetes is mostly a lifestyle choice, from eating too many carbohydrates though, not just junk food. This is why you get "skinny" Type 2's that eat "healthy" foods.

      • “Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease”

        Learn something new each day

Add that to the list of autoimmune diseases that seem rampant these days. Thanks for the education :(

        • No worries. It's frustrating as a parent with a Type 1 child when people don't understand and just assume they have eaten too much junk food. It's a 24/7 non-stop job, keeping our child alive.

The diseases are VERY different, T1's stop producing insulin and the cause of it is unknown at this point.

Type 1 is a death sentence in countries that don't have access to insulin, so we are very lucky in Australia to have the NDSS and most things subsidised. Offers like this are important too as meters like this are extremely important in keeping T1's alive.

  • Any actual diabetics looking at getting one of these meters, these are not the most accurate of meters. The "Freedom Freestyle Lite" from Abbott is the most accurate when compared to lab drawn bloods. They are also free for diabetics: http://myfreestyle.com.au/freestyle-family-offer/

Freestyle/Abbott have had theirs free for years! I got one for seeing what certain foods do to my blood glucose/ketones (non-diabetic)

Best treatment of Diabetes (both types) is diet, specifically low carb. LCHF, no carb, keto, paleo etc. Anything that stops those ridiculous spikes.

    Enjoy!

    • Heck yes, our T1 has a HbA1c of 4.8% due to LCHF. It is criminal that Diabetics are told to eat a high carb diet and it is why there are SO many T1 children (and adults) with complications.

There is a better way, you can get off the rollercoaster.

  • I know that there is a lot of hate on this deal, but I didn't realise that Diabetes meters are usually free. I have a couple of family members who are too slack to check their diabetes (recent diagnosis, not very bad yet) and I know for a fact that they don't have meters, so I ordered a an Accu-chek & an Abbott so really there is no excuse for them not to check anymore. If it wasn't for this deal, these people wouldn't have meters.

    • really there is no excuse for them not to check

      Let the excuses begin…
They will need to buy the expensive test strips before they can do anything. With 2 different meters, you / they'll have to buy 2 different sets at around $50 for 50! If they don't use them before expiry date, that's around $100 wasted. (Some brands used to include 10 strips with meter. There are cheaper deals in strips at eBay, but time before expiry is usually less.)
The manufacturers will love you long time ;-)

Also testing does need a bit of education of how & when to test, plus what the results mean. Not fun when they're avoiding the testing & information already.

Sometimes wanting to help people to get tested for issues they are avoiding… can cause unexpected consequences - like being told to mind your own business. I've seen people explode into rages over similar issues. Hopefully that won't be the case.

My GP does the test free. (Well nurse does test & Medicare / taxpayers pay) It's just a simple diagnostic to check blood sugar levels with one of these Performa meters. Certainly not much use for diabetic as they need regular daily monitoring of levels. But good to check your levels each visit & discuss results. (Best to book same time each visit for more consistent & meaningful measure of glucose level.)

      • Well I got another family member who is doing the daily checks, so every so often the other will see the one who does and get a reading even though the symptoms have already gone away. I guess the smart thing to do would be to get the same brand/model of meters for each of them and bum a few strips for when they feel the need for it.

        • I tried to bum a few stips to try out my free meter, from the Nurse at the GP - but failed :-(

It does make more economic sense to all use the same brand / model if possible. The strips are expensive & are usually different for each brand / model. I didn't realise that until I went to get a meter. Plus if the family member has subsidised strips…

Hope the testing is a success & everyone is OK. Hope you have checked your levels - unfortunately diabetes tends to run in families.

  • So just for good measure, does someone else want to comment on here that these things are usually or almost always free as well (clearly without reading prior comments!?) If so, don't worry, it's not like 20 other people before you will have posted the same comment or anything…! :p

  • Thanks OP

Definetly need a new machine since my Optium Xceed is getting pretty old.
