Let's not ozbargain this for the sake of genuine diabetics who could benefit from this

    • +5

I will give you more than 1 vote if I can!!

    • +8

They are usually 100% mail-in rebate anyway at most times.

Well said. U got more likes than the Deal, and ur comment deserve it.

I am a genuine diabetic, and last time this promotion was on the stock got cleared by ozbargain.

      • How do you know?

        • Got an email saying that they were out of stock a few days after getting the confirmation email. At least that's what they led me to believe.

      • Chemist warehouse always has a promotion on these, buy accu check meter worth $40 and you get $40 cashback (at least here in WA), not sure about other states

      • +4

I'd gladly not be rid of diabetes and even trade with yoj and not be subsidised, but that can't happen. What's not subsidised is the lollies, actual supplies like pump sites and canulas and never truly being able to just do what ever the hell you want, even if you can come close with a pump, it's not the same. Diabetes isn't a bad condition of you manage it, but your attitude is terrible.

        • just turned diabetic …tires as hell….I can sense my nerve ending deteriorating …. that tingle / fire feeling. not over weight …… bad genes…… big impact of vitality …… if my income falls, so do my taxes …… hope someone else will pay more.

the impact of diabetes on the economy must be enormous …..

        • @garage sale: You do no have to suffer from complications. I will just leave this here for you. https://www.pinterest.com/typeonegrit/

        • thank …. we live in denial until visit the doctor :-(

  • +19

    OzBargaining this seems silly imo

    • +11

I agree but for those ozbargainers who are diabetic, it would be a good deal to know of too in the true sense of finding a good deal.. so I probably would still + the OP for posting the deal out of the good of the community but hopefully people who don't actually need it don't just get one for the sake of getting a free item.

      • +7

Your GP may have free ones in the practice for diabetics (mine has free Accu-Chek Performa). Otherwise ask your chemist as there are often different brands & models with Cashback.

The money is made on the test strips (subsidised for diabetics). The ink jet printer business model of health care.

        • i got the meter for free and get the needles for free for insulin but i dont get the test strips subsidised or anthing else, either your lucky or diabetes council and clinic are lying to me

        • @gothioso:
          I don't have diabetes, but did a search…

Ask your GP or clinic if you qualify for a NDSS card (or else PBS subsidy) for diabetics. It has been discussed in this deal. Fill out the application form in the NDSS link below, or at your health provider.

Subsidised 50 strips cost around $8.20, or 50c if a pensioner, $1.30 if have health care card. See order form in link below. Normal cost is around $50!

Full details of NDSS & registering for card
The NDSS delivers education and information services to people with diabetes. It also provides a range of diabetes products at a subsidised cost. It is an initiative of the Australian Government administered by Diabetes Australia, and is free to register.

The NDSS gives you access to a large range of subsidised products that help you to affordably self-manage your diabetes.
          These products include:
          subsidised blood glucose testing strips

Delivery of NDSS products is free.
(Chemists may act as agents, providing strips etc at NDSS price.)

You can get a further discount on some NDSS products if you hold one of the following concession cards:
          Health Care card
          Pensioner concession card
          Safety Net card
          Department of Veterans’ Affairs card.

If you order one of these without a genuine need you are a douchebag. Save them for people who really need them.

    • +2

or maybe those ordering it without a genuine need is a prick who wants to get prick by needle

  • +11

Accu-Check meters have always been free. Good find OP for those unaware.

    • +2

      thats what i thought

      thanks for clearing that up.

      • +3

        I like to be transparent.

  • +1

Thanks, got one for my Mum who is type 1. Cheers.

  • +1

Thanks to the OP. Actually need this for a friend to keep an eye on gestational diabetes instead of having to go the pharmacy to do it.

    • +3

She will need to buy the strip and pricker thing ….. it's not like in gattaca

  • +2

this might get abused. Warning in description should be added to ensure only insulin dependants get it (or anyone with a medical condition requiring sugar monitoring).

    • never mind, title has been edited.

    • People don't realise it uses consumables so if you don't have a need it's a waste

  • +10

These things are always free. It's the printer pricing model where the printer is cheap but the cartridge is very expensive.

    • +1

To be specific, you have to buy the testing strips and the lancettes.

    • These things are always free. It's the printer pricing model where the printer is cheap but the cartridge is very expensive.

I'll wait for a deal where they pay me to take one.

  • +2

These can be had for free quite easily, because they make money on the strips.

    • +1

As Make it so says, there is almost always someone doing these for free. they have the printer & printer ink business model.

  • These offers are usually also for people with impaired glucose tolerance Pre-Diabetes. However the expensive strips are not subsidised like for diabetics.

  • -1

At the rate post-Christmas confectionery bargains have been up-voted around here, I can see this becoming a VERY popular offer.

    • Already got mine free. But the strips are too expensive, so never used.

I'm not diabetic. Was advised to get one of these by new GP, but my specialist said not to bother. Turned out raised glucose was temporary side effect of medicine withdrawal. By time I got machine I didn't need it.

  • +1

If you do not have a NDSS card then you will pay full price for consumables.

    • Most strips are on the PBS if you are a diabetic with registration. Needles are free.

      • I think that NDSS works out cheaper than PBS unless you have a concession rate for PBS, but I'm not 100% sure that's just what a pharmacist told me a few weeks ago.

  • +1

I thought it was bike computers at a glance at the pics… following the bike gear bargain earlier… hmm

  • Which is the cheapest to test?

  • Trying to get one for my grandfather, but it looks like you lot have OzBargained the site. It won't even load now. That's a LOT of diabetics on here! -_-

    • Just go to the chemist and buy one. They will have the rebate leaflets handy.

      • Thanks for that. Anyway I waited a few minutes, refreshed and it seemed to go through. All good now!

  • +2

These are always free. It is the consumables that will clean out your pockets.

  • -5

    Normal price, no bargain.
It just the old razor blade model, same as ink-jest.

    • What Manic says is true.

I think he meant inkjets (rather than jest). But essentially you have to pay for needles and strips. (Although some of these are potentially subsidised)

Diabetes can get many such meters for free or at a very low cost. If cost of strips and needles are not stated I think this is deceptive as this meter is otherwise useless.

  • +2

Almost all meters are free with a rebate. The expense is in the strips. It's like printers. Cheap product expensive refill!

If you or a relative are diabetic, speak to your doctor or diabetes educator who can get you a free meter and strips. Anyway, you want to be using the right meter for yourself not just the cheapest.

  • +2

Thank you for the link, got one coming to me and it looks fantastic. Have an old Abbott blood tester and it's on it's last legs giving me false readings all the time.

Good to see OzBargain look out for us Type 1's here ; )

    • These free deals are posted regularly.
But best to ask your chemist, GP, specialist or diabetes educator for advice. Usually lots of free models to choose from.

  • +2

The higher end Accu-Chek meters models (i.e. Performa, Performa Nano, and Mobile), if purchased from Chemist Warehouse, are always virtually free after ROCHE's cash back offer anyway (except for Performa Nano, which is $1 after cash back).

This is nice for people without convenient access to a Chemist Warehouse. For those who may have a Chemist Warehouse nearby, it will be faster to go into store than waiting for the post, although they will have to pay first and wait for the cash back.

    • +1

Also at other chemists. Just check price is around that of Cashback offered.

May be available free at GP for diabetics. Mine has the free Performa model. That way the GP also does the paperwork for the NDSS card, for subsidised test strips etc. Best option for those with diabetes as you don't want to deal with it alone.

  • -6

Way too many goody goodies here today.
Motto: We Ozbargain therefore we scourge.

    • -3

We do like collecting negs, don't we…

Unfortunately if the deal is OzBargained, it may not be available to those who need it on medical grounds.

But OzBargaining for a free button battery…

Hide comments from user Bargitrage… tick.

    • -3

What sort of batteries do these Accu-Chek Performa meters have in them. Need something like a 3032 I think.

  • +1

Got this for my dad who's a diabetic and he's not on here or online really. Thanks for putting this up!

  • hi guys, where can I get the Accu-Chek Performa test strips for cheapest price =)

    • If not diabetic, but needing to watch glucose levels (eg pre-diabetic), try eBay, but watch out for use by dates. Otherwise discuss subsidised strips for diabetics with your GP - see advice below.

    • +2

It depends who it is for, and whether the person has got Medicare.

For Medicare holders with medical needs, if they are diabetic, by being part of of National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS), they may get it at the subsidised prices ($16.50 for 100strips, or lower if concession holders, see https://static.diabetesaustralia.com.au/s/fileassets/diabete… ). If they are not diabetic, or not part of NDSS, they may discuss with their doctors to see whether they may be eligible to have them on prescription under the Pharmaceutical Bnefit Scheme, and get it at the PBS subsidised price. Nonetheless you will need to speak to your doctor eventually.

For outright private purchases, chemist warehouse seems to be the lowest, $49.69 http://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/58969/Accu-Chek-Perfo…, but of course you can ask if other pharmacies can match the price.

For more information and details, go into a local pharmacy and enquire the pharmacists.

EDIT: eBay never came to my mind on this. Hence please regard my comment for brick and mortar stores.

      • +1

I would expect diabetics would know about subsidies & costs. So didn't think about giving your helpful response.

I was diagnosed (incorrectly) as pre-diabetic & told by my GP to get one of these (free) to use 3 times a day for a week! But test strips of 50 were so expensive, so looked for better deals.

        • I started typing my response before I saw your post - you post fast!

All good, learned something new about other buying channels =)

        • @zrmx:
Short responses are quicker to post :-)
The only reason to know about other channels is if you do not qualify on health grounds for subsidy.

    • Thanks guys. It is very helpful =)

  • +5

    Thanks OP got ten

    • +2

      Nice troll.

    • Why ten. I just got two?

    • +5

      One for each finger ?

      • +1

        hang ten!

    • -1

Ha ha ha… that's going to work out well for you when you can claim the rebate on only 1 unit.

  • What sort of batteries do these Accu-Chek Performa meters have in them. Need something like a 3032 I think (2 of)?

    • +1

You never have to buy batteries - you just ring accu-chek and they send you free batteries for the life of your meter.

      • +1

Well that comment just increased the Ozbargaining :-(

  • chemist warehouse have this FREE (rebate) for 80% of time in a year…

  • got one but not sure whether this will work as it is a unique code that you get when you get with the meter normally(as filled this in with the code i got when purchased 3 months ago)..type 1 diabetic here have the mobile version which is awesome as inbuilt catridge which is excellent, get the strips at discount price but if your not a diabeteic you would pay full price for strips $50 which is 50c a test http://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/60468/Accu-Chek-Mobil…

  • I got this last time they had the freebie offer. Was at every chemist back then. I got two accucheck performas. You didn't need to be a diabetic though. It was a refund of $40 to anyone who bought one. I bought one for myself (was having low blood sugar issues at that time, I tried giving up sugar LOL) and one for my husband who is diabetic. Cat ended up having diabetes so the monitor is used for the cat now.

But I registered it, and have asked for help with it over the phone (explaining the whole time it was for the cat) and they've been nothing but wonderful.

    • What's the optimal range of blood glucose for a cat?

      • Pretty much same as humans, my cat is in remission now and is in the 4's. She was up to 27 before her diabetes was under control.

        • 27???? That's at least one of its lives gone.

    • Cats just eat fish and biscuits, how can they get diabetes?

      • Carbohydrates. Cats and dogs do not get diabetes in the wild, it's because of the high carb kibble they are fed.

      • It is carbs from dry catfood that cause diabetes. My cat was a hills ($69 a bag) special catfood for five years due to another problem (crystals) and the dry catfood caused diabetes.

Now she only eats fancy reason chicken and liver pate and is in remission. If she stays on low carb catfood, she stays in remission and doesn't need insulin.

        • Do you mean fancy feast?

        • @nfr:

yes Fancy Feast - chicken and giblet pate - wrote the last comment at 3am or so LOL

  • Sweet deal…

    • +2

Your original comment was better ;-)

      • +3

I know, but then I saw the comment just above where the BSM was being used for a cat. I didn't want to appear to be a copycat.

  • +2

As a Type 1 who is currently using an Accu-Chek Nano, and putting the results into Excel to track my own trends, the idea of having the one they're sending me (the Aviva Connect) is awesome. Can track it online. Epic! Thanks OP, appreciate it.

    • Nice. Seems a good model for keeping track.

I've got a Performa from a previous offer. Out of interest I filled in the true details including I'm using the Performa. Result - you already have the optimum device for your condition.

As expected… No meter for you ;-)

      • Even selecting the Perfoma for me, gave me the Aviva Connect.

        • Device chosen by site is based on medical condition - you would need the monitoring as Type1. That's what you are doing with the data now.

I don't have your condition, so a lesser device is suitable just to check levels (but trend tracking would be nice feature to have).

I should have pointed out that difference in condition above.

Will be a step up from the Nano!

        • +1

Okay, heaps more sense now! But I read that like it would be nice to have Type 1? Trust me, it's not lol.

        • +1

          @iRMonkey:
          Updated last comment.
I live for food, so would never think such a heartless thought :-(
          Must get sleep…

  • +1

My dad is a Rep for a competing diabetes company and the meters are given away for free for the sole purpose of charging premium for the strips.

I understand the Ozb mentality for freebies, but these are honestly always free from numerous outlets or hospitals.

Is this a deal? Nope. Is it fun to get free stuff? Yeh I guess so.
