Have one, hate it. Garbage router. Got mine cheaper than this and it was over priced then. Won't go the distance with wifi. Open plan house, not a lot of walls, maybe reaches the next room. I have this on a timer to reboot it every 24 hours because if I don't, it locks up. Needs an egg cooker on top of it or a hot air chip fryer would at least make it handy. For some reason it likes to auto throttle any Android device that connects to it back down to 1mb/s while Apple is all gates open and full steam ahead.

Wait till they come down to about $70 and then use that $70 to put towards something that isn't garbage.

Oh, and don't bother contacting d-link for warranty or to ask if all the stupid things your newly acquired box of wires are normal thing, cause they don't care and won't return requests to fix said issues.

My biggest recommendation is to throw away the router and use the box it came in as its replacement. I don't know if it works any better, but I know it isn't doing any worse…

    • Oh damn it. And I thought I got a good deal. Reviews on the web aren't that bad!

      • It looks nice and modern, but I guess nothing beats the 'proper' antenna (s)

I think you got a dud one or something in your house doesn't get along with it.

I've had mine for just over a year now and haven't had any issues at all. I couldn't be happier with it and the range of the Wi-Fi is excellent in our house.

I've got 4 x android tablets & 2 x android smart phones connected to my wi-fi without any problems. Plus a PS4, network printer and a POE switch running 9 x security cameras….all running smoothly.

    • Adding my experience with this router: The range was excellent, but the other points I agree with.

Don't even bother putting a USB drive into it because the temperature will roast it.

It required regular power cycles, which was a big disappointment.

Sometimes it would stop working with Android devices for some reason.

I sent it back and am using my trusty Billion7800N again, which never requires power cycles.

  • I have the 2890 and it's served me wonderfully well. 5GHz signal is a little weak but that's probably the configuration of my house.
Is the 2900 worth an upgrade at all?

  • At this price you can buy the Asus AC68u which seems to be a real benchmark for consumer routers.

Have a look at the advanced feature set: https://www.asus.com/au/Networking/RTAC68U/ASUSWRT/

    • Couldn't agree more, Asus in my opinion are the best out there at the moment, I own both Asus and TPLink, Asus definitely beat TPLink anytime.

      not a modem

      • Ok, there is a modem version of this router. Personally I would use a dedicated modem and a dedicated router as the options for running alternative firmware seem to be greater that way.

  • I have a DSL-2890AL and it has been really frustrating. The wifi (2.4GHz) coverage is good but it the speed drops from 15 mbps to 2-3 mbps after a few hours of use. I will have to restart the modem all the time. The LAN connection is stable, no problem. I dont really know what to do. I have upgraded my firmware to the latest but still to no avail.
