  • do you still have any Kenya Wakulima?

I bought it back in Oct during the 4 pack sale and its the best coffee ive had in ages

or do you have something similar?

    cheers

    • Yes I have a couple of kgs of the Wakulima left but I also have some new crop of the Kenya Wamuguma which is very similar and a real stand out! Available through through our website :-)

      • can you do a deal on either one?
happy to buy 2x 980g (btw why not 1kg? such a specific number)

also how does the Colombia Finca Las Margaritas compare to the kenyan varieties?

i used to think the kenyan ones were really bitter and colombian varieties were better, but recently found the reverse true. so confused

        • +4

It's quite subjective and also what brewing method you use would effect which coffees are more suitable and roast profiles. The Kenyan Wamuguma and Wakulima are fantastic as a black coffee and will suit a light-medium roast to really bring out the unique florals. They have a great acidity and the Wamuguma has a really intense Rhubarb aroma. This isn't to say that they can't be enjoyed as a milk coffee though.
The Colombians tend to be more in line with what people are used to. To give a very generalised overview:-

Colombian coffees are routinely listed among the top three coffee-producing countries in the world. The classic Colombian profile—as with other better-quality coffees from Peru, etc—brings together a mellow acidity and a strong caramel sweetness, perhaps with a nutty undertone. Sweet and medium-bodied.

Africa The birthplace of coffee. African Coffee, like the continent, is rich in colour and flavour. Tastes vary from the beautiful clean, washed winey and floral Kenyans to a big chocolate, earthy Yemen bomb to massive dark fruit notes of a natural Ethiopia. So many different profiles and a true testament to what a unique product coffee is.

Unfortunately I can't offer a deal on the Wamuguma as it's 3 times more expensive and will require me to perform an individual small batch roast for you. It would need to be added through the standard web listing.

Here are the 2 individual coffee cupping notes for you.

          Colombia Finca Las Margaritas

          Kenya Wamuguma AA
          Cupping Score: 91.0
          Region: Thika
          Varietal: SL28 / SL 34
Processing: Fully Washed / Sun Dried
          Altitude: 5280 feet
          Harvesting Season: January – April
Fully washed blend of SL28/SL34. Aromas of chocolate and sultanas with a syrupy mouth feel, mild grapefruit acidity and clean flavors of brown sugar.Complex and intense!
Wamuguma is one of two washing stations associated with the Ritho Coop in the Thika region of Kenya. This Coop is located on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains, which form the eastern border of the Great Rift Valley. The Coop has a membership of approximately 2,000 farmers, and half of the members deliver cherry to the Wamuguma washing station.

        • @mannabeans: Hi Rep

          Really appreciate the details provided

understand the pricing for the Wamuguma

But are you able to do a deal on the wakulima?

i.e. same as this deal with 1x980g wakulima and 1x980g Colombia Finca Las Margaritas for $59.95?

Ill order the wamuguma separately since its standard price

          Cheers

        • +2

@furythree: The Wakulima is actually the same price as the Wamuguma and requires me to do a small batch roast so I'm only really breaking even on the sale but as a one off I'll do it for you :-) Please leave notes in Paypal :-)

        • +2

          @mannabeans: thanks! this is fantastic
dont worry, if it tastes great ill order more next time to make up for the break even

im actually happy to pay a bit more to get the wamuguma if that helps since youve completely sold me
dont have to pay bargain basement prices all the time if it helps support an awesome local business

edit just placed an order and left a note
          thanks again

        • +2

(btw why not 1kg? such a specific number)

For postage costs, to keep below the next charging step up which is > 1kg I believe.
Need to account for packaging etc too.

        • @javab0y: Thanks that makes sense

        • @furythree: Thanks very much, very kind of you :-) I shipped out your order with the Wamuguma today. Hope you enjoy

        • @mannabeans: Awesome Thanks! look forward to it!

Hi Pulseidon, the prices of coffees can vary greatly and we like to rotate through different specialty coffees and adjust the price accordingly.

The Colombia Las Margaritas listed in our deal is a direct trade microlot coffee and the farm placed in the Cup Of Excellence. For this reason it is slightly more expensive than the Brazil Cerrado that is listed in the deal you posted a link to.

The Kenya Wamuguma that I was discussing in the thread above actually costs us 3 times more than the Brazil Cerrado in your deal and is cupping at 91 which is up there with the best of the geishas.

I do like to run some of the more specialty coffees but can certainly look at posting a slightly cheaper option on the next deal :-)

      • +1

Hey - yours is a great deal and I didn't mean to rain on your parade by any means! Just thought some people would prefer your types of beans and some might prefer the ones the other place offered.

I don't know much about coffee but am keen to learn more and will definitely look to get me some of your beans in the future!

        • +4

I hit up Mannabeans around once a month. The beans never disappoint!

        • +4

No problem, just passing on some info :-) It can be quite confusing with so many coffees. This year we'll be shrinking our range but offering more direct trade and specialty coffees with a real focus on quality, sustainability and farming practises. This way we get full traceability back to the individual farms and can pay premiums back to help the farmers with development.

Some of the other milled coffees can be great but hard to get traceability and sustainability. With milled coffee many farmers will bring their coffee to the washing/processing station and it is all mixed together. They are paid the daily rate but you don't know which farms the coffee came from and aren't going to be able to get exactly the same coffee next time.

        • @mannabeans: This is all very interesting and I definitely appreciate efforts to encourage sustainability and traceability!

I have my eye on a Porlex grinder and Aeropress - will your beans work well with that brewing method? (I know nothing about this stuff and am doing it on a student budget haha)

        • @Pulseidon: No problem, I frequently use an Aeropress myself and love it. I always take one when travelling. The porlex grinders are also good but it depends how many coffees you drink. If you're like me and have multiple a day then it can get a bit tiring on the arm haha

Yes these coffees can all be enjoyed using Aeropress. If you're drinking black or espresso then a lighter roast on some of the more fruitier Ethiopians can really be an experience :-)

        • @mannabeans: I usually have just one coffee as part of my morning ritual (can be a very different story during end of semester exams though haha)

I'll look to order my Aeropress soon and some of your beans to go with it! Thanks very much for all the info

        • @mannabeans:

What about those of us who simply want good coffee at a good price, and have been counting on Manna to deliver (well, literally)?

        • +2

@elektron: nothing will change in this regard :-) I value our loyal Ozbargain customers and will continue to offer good coffees at a good price. I have no intention of increasing prices at the moment.

        • +1

@mannabeans: Thanks for the reassurance, Simon.

  • +2

I may have to try some of these coffee beans, I have noticed you post a lot and they always sound tempting

    • Fantastic! Always happy to welcome a new customer and do some caffeine deals ;-) Hope you enjoy the coffee

      • I have not ordered yet, may try a smaller size before ordering up large, just to be on the safe side.

        • +1

They're premium beans, better than anything you'd get at a supermarket and at this price it's not much of a risk even for a very risk-averse person :)

        • @elektron: I'm well aware they are a premium bean, and I don't usually drink supermarket stuff unless I am desperate. It's getting stuck with almost 2kgs of beans that you would prefer to be something else.

Then there is the time it takes to get through 2kg of beans…..there is a short timeframe to get the most out of your beans (yes even whole beans), and after they start to deteriorate

        • +2

@aim54x: Happy to offer a smaller quantity if that helps you out.

Shipping is a bit of a killer but I can do $35 delivered for 1kg on either of the coffees for you if that suits.

Otherwise feel free to order a free sample through the website. $2.95 shipping :-)

        • +2

@aim54x: I had the same reservations initially, but then took advice from someone on here and usually go for the 4 x 480g and freeze 3 of the bags, then thaw them for 24 hours before opening to ensure there's no moisture when they're opened. I was speptical about this approach but really can't tell the difference between beans that have been frozen vs those that haven't.

        • @mannabeans: thanks, the reply was very much directed at the prejudice in the preceding comment.

  • Curious why the weight is 980g and not 1kg? What happens to that 20g?

    • 980g of beans and 20g for the bag :)

      • +8

That's correct. All standard website listings are for 250g, 500g and 1kg but for the Ozbargain deals we ship Aus Post express and need to keep at the 2kg mark otherwise shipping jumps by upto $5 and it would mean that I wouldnt be able to offer the more expensive specialty coffes at the cheaper Ozbargain deal pricing. :-)

        • Wow such tiny details, thanks mate.

  • Will you have beans available next week ? I've still got a good supply of beans left from my last purchase.

    • +1

Hey Jono, Happy New Year mate. It will be running for at least a week :-)

  • Hi Rep, A few friends and I would also like a deal on higher end speciality coffee like the Wamuguma mentioned above or Geisha. Would be great if you could post a deal soon.

    • @AlWiese I've just sent you an email about filter coffees :-) Please let me know if you didn't receive as it was to .gov and not sure about spam filters. Cheers Simon

  • +3

Thanks Simon. I've ordered 10 kg. For those that haven't tried Manna Beans I highly recommend them.

    • Thanks Alex, I got you're email with roast preferences. You're going to love the Costa Rica Black Honey as an espresso, I've been drinking it everyday for the last week already had 6 today :-)

      • Where is the best place to put in roast preferences? I think generally I would like a slightly darker roast than you usually do but didn't know if this was possible… maybe only for larger quantities? :)

        • +2

@Evil-Emo, For all standard website listings we small batch roast on demand and always offer to roast according to your preferences if notes are left in Paypal upon checkout. If no notes are left we roast to the profile that we deem as best for the coffee.

For the deal pricing we need to roast in larger quantities so can't always offer the same service. In alwiese's case(above thread) it was easier to accommodate due to the larger quantity required and also he didn't order this deal but paid higher pricing for some more expensive coffees

This being said you're more than welcome to still leave notes in Paypal with deals about roast preference or how you drink it (ie usually drink espresso or usually drink long black) Especially when some of our deals have a lucky dip component to them as I normally have a lot of different coffees being roasted and I'll always try to accommodate where possible.

Most of the deal coffees are roasted for the majority so that they perform well for milk based and espresso. It is more when people require some of the more expensive specialty coffees for filter/pour over or cold drip that we really need to roast to a lighter profile for them. Often we work out a separate deal by email if it's possible.

I'm going to try to restructure the deal listings slightly this year perhaps giving 2 options each time to cater to a wider audience. Perhaps a light-medium roast coffee option to cater more to people after specialty filter coffee :-)

  • fresh roasted. Normally how fresh when it get delivered? 5d/7d/10d/15d or longer?

    • +3

All of the orders placed today were roasted and shipped today so the majority of people will receive tomorrow by Aus Post overnight express.

Please bear in mind in this instance if the coffee is received within 1 day of roasting it may still have a bit of sourness for first couple of days. Generally speaking coffee needs 4-5 days to degas(sit and rest in the valved bags it comes in) The beans release carbon dioxide over this time and allow the flavours to develop.

You can still drink straight away but it's something to bear in mind as coffees develop at different rates and normally need a few days of resting before they really excel!

We don't usually send out coffee more than a few days old unless it is a 4 x 480g deal and we might send 1 of the bags marked with a 'Drink First' label which has already had 3-6 days to degas.

I haven't drunk anything else in my new machine and I love Manna's Beans.

    Great quality and service.

What coffee do you service in the shop please?

    • Hi Mchuelio, thanks for you kind feedback :-) We run jamocha at our roastery and normally a single (today it's Coast Rica Black Honey)

I can certainly vouch for the fact it smells good :-)

  • Any recommendations for the brewover..havimg my first go with it

    • Hi Paul,
Thanks for supporting our new product. I have some fantastic coffees for cold drip and filter for Brewover. Some personal recommendations would be Kenya Wamuguma, Kenya Maui, Ethiopia Mormoma and Ethiopia Bita Bonga.

If you shoot me an email with how much you need for Brewover (ie 250g, 500g or 1kg) and how much you need for other brewing methods(ie milk based, espresso) then I'll try to assist :-)

  • +2

Simon and Team are really great people, good service and friendly, good product, I got some filter coffees in Dec: wamuguma, geishas, costa rica, burundi, guatamala on Aeropress & v60. Recommended highly. Can you email me too i'm looking for high end filters again please.

    • Thanks Brisboy, very kind of you. Hope you had a great Christmas break and enjoyed the coffees :-) Please can you shoot me an email so I can match the Ozbargain name to email/customer.
      Thanks
      Simon

  • You guys should do a deal on the Brewover on Ozbargain

2nd time customer. Awesome experience with 4 pack. Looking to try the Costa Rica Black Honey and the Brazil Black diamond. Any chance on a deal of that ?

    Cheers,
    Nick

    • +1

Hey Nick, Happy to offer for $64.95 delivered if that suits!? funds can be sent through Paypal to [email protected]. Please ensure that a note is left in Paypal :-)

      Thanks Simon

      • Done!

        Payment sent.

        Cheers,
        Nick

  • 2nd purchase from me also, got the mixed 8 pack last time. Have been slumming it with terrible beans so looking forward to something of higher quality.

Edit. Whoops, accidentally ordered two packs. PM'd you you details for refund through facebook as only wanted one!

    • +1

Thanks for your order. I saw your Facebook message and have already actioned a refund and adjusted your order for you :-) funds will get credited back into your Paypal account.

      • Awesome, thanks very much. Looking forward to their arrival!

  • Thanks for the great deal.

Same as before, any chance of swapping non-washed to washed beans? My coffee machine/grinder does not like washed (sticky) beans.

    • Hey Luka, no problem. The Colombian is a high altitude washed coffee anyway so I'll just switch out the Brazilian for you. Please leave a note in Paypal :-) Thanks

      • Thank you again. Ordered…

  • Hi there, finally got the wife on board the coffee train but she has got her hands on A chemex pour over which we have been using instead of our espresso machine. I am amazed how black coffee done well outshines a good extraction on our espress machine!

    I had two questions:
Would you send out only one bag instead of two for half cost as it will last us until it is no longer fresh and if so which would you recommend out of the two for black with pour over?

    Warm regards,
    Russell

    • Hi Russell,

I have some fantastic coffees for pour over at the moment but they tend to be a bit more expensive and the shipping cost is similar to the 2kg deal. If you want something roasted specifically for this method then I have some nice lighter roast fruity Ethiopians.

I could offer 1kg delivered for $38 if that helps? Otherwise if you prefer one of the coffees listed in this deal then I could offer $35 delivered but they are more of a medium roast and not as suited for pour over.

If you decide to go ahead then you can send funds through Paypal to [email protected] and leave notes

      Cheers
      Simon

  • Hello Simon. Happy new year and all the best for 2016.

I just placed my order but would like 2 x 980g of the Colombian and forego the Brazilian if possible.

    Thanks and regards.

    • Not sure if you left notes in Paypal when you checked out but if you did then hopefully my the team would have actioned the request for you :-)

      • I failed to do so unfortunately. No worries though as happy with whatever arrives.

        • It's just because when the orders come in it can be the case that they are shipped the same day and sometimes I don't have a chance to view or reply the Ozbargain thread before this occurs.

Also it can be difficult for me to correlate an Ozbargain name to an order as there are no email or contact details attached to the Ozbargain user info.

If a message is also left in Paypal then it will definitely be seen when we are processing and packing your order and we will always try to assist where possible :-)

Sorry I couldn't be of more help on this occasion.

        • +1

@mannabeans: My oversight and appreciate your service Simon.

        • @cornbeef: Thanks Cornbeef, also forgot to say Happy New year and hope you had a great break over Christmas and 2016 is a good year for you :-)

        • @mannabeans: Thanks mate. Glad I kept the Brazilian. Ground some beans this morning and a very interesting coffee.

        • @mannabeans:

          Hi Rep,

Can you this deal on Ethiopia Yirg Kochere Wash Gr1 ?
          Cheers

      • Hey Simon I left notes but your team did nothing ;/

        • Please send me an email as there are no contact details attached your Ozbargain name so I have no way of matching you to an order.

Also if you can provide some information in the email as to what this is in regard to and what notes you left then I can look into it for you.

          Thanks
          Simon

  • Hey Simon, sent you an inquiry thru the messages. Thanks.
