Please Recommend a Diligent Bulk Billing GP in Sydney CBD or Chatswood

I just returned from a Bulk Billing GP in Chatswood. They had a sign on the counter requesting that patients only present with 1 complaint and not to take more than "10–15 minutes".

I introduced myself to the GP and started with the background of my complaint. The GP cut me off and recommended various OTC products. I enquired as to what the active ingredients in them were and the GP described a particular herb before stating that she didn't know specifically what was in them. The GP wrote me up a script and had me out the door in less than 5 minutes. Needless to say I didn't bother with the script and ~$70 of tax-payer funds was wasted.

I rarely visit a GP (or any other health professional) so I don't have a regular/local doctor. I usually wait until I have 2 or 3 serious complaints before seeking help. So I would like to find a diligent Bulk Billing GP who cares enough to get to know me and listen to the backgrounds of my complaints with a view for them to be my regular doctor.

Can anyone recommend a diligent Bulk Billing GP in Sydney CBD or Chatswood?

Thank you. :)

  • Not $70. It's ~$30 for bulk billed visits, especially < 15mins.
How about going to see a proper doctor seeing that you rarely visit doctors, the cost is negligible in the long run and you'll be much happier.
Most charge around $70 and you can claim back ~ $30 from Medicare. They are more attentive, and have an interest in doing their job right.

I live around the area. No good bulk billing doctors unless you are a pensioner.
However if you want a good normal doctor pm me and I'll point them out to you. I work in the area as a pharmacist so I have a good idea.

  • IMO This is a foreseeable outcome from the Government not to adjust the Medicare visit rebate so Australian people are forced to have co payment or GPs have to provide sub optimal service in order to cope with the cost of running a practice.

I could be wrong. IMO the 24hrs centre in Chatswood is always run by admin. Visiting doctors change all the time. Many are retiring doctors, part time doctors…who are there making extra dollars for extra hours. Most hardly work there and barely know you and time to know your family. Since they do not know you, why bother to refer you or write a script for stronger medication. Few exception - there was a female GP whose husband Is a cardiologist - excellent. Couldn't recall a time the receptionists smile, so have not revisited for years. Would not bother to get some of them to look after my sick dog - most of the time you get no script or just common medication. Always asked to come back again if not cure itself and to see somebody else. If there is anything wrong, unfortunately none of these doctors will take responsibility since you have seen so many different doctors. If seriously sick at night, would go straight to Royal North Shore.

Many GPs in Chatswood so check this out - a good review of a female GP there or this or find in yellow pages
The GP I would recommend is on suite 8, level one, 398-400 Victoria Avenue, next opposite to the old post office. 94152288. Diligent, mainly Chinese patients but open for all.

  • Late response but… like you, I haven't found any decent bulk-billing GPs in the CBD at all. The closest I found was in Rozelle (PM for more details). You can book an extended appointment (30-40mins) if you have multiple issues, otherwise the regular appointments are 20mins. The doctors won't push you out the door, but mine gets visibly uncomfortable if I have too many issues during the short appointment, and will ask me to reschedule to discuss the rest.

The upside is that the doctor I see there is the most caring and genuine GP I've ever dealt with! (And also knows her stuff - particularly with mental health / counseling).

  • +1

If I have to spend up to 30 minutes per consult with every patient with multiple complaints and only bulk bill, I won't survive. I would rather quit being a GP and look for other jobs. A tradesman probably earn a lot more than that.

    • knee-jerk reaction.
Bulk bill will soon or later extinguish as Government does not adjust the GP rebate according to CPI over the years.
If people like bulk bill and have worry free doctors service in future and for our kids, voice to the politicians.

  • Dr Galina Palachevskaiaat at square medical centre at world square is great. Bulk bills on week days.
