10kg Riviana Basmati Rice Woolworths $8.99

1560

Call me naive, but this appears to be an enormous amount of basmati rice for a very low price. In the past I've been glad to get 5kg at this price.

        • and you still not finish that rice after more than a year??

        • @brongz: finished, flatmate buys nowadays.

        • maybe they are ageing it …… with the low interest rates, and poor stock market, it seems better value to invest in basmati and age it yourself ……. bit like buying current vintage wine……. and then you know how old it is rather than what is on the label.

A product that gets better past it's best buy date …… no wonder it's never on special due to getting close to best buy dates.

    • +1

      I always prefer india Gate

I get it whenever its on special, even if its only $5 off

    • +2

Costco sells India Gate Premium which is very good but not as good as India Gate Classic. Also ever since AUD went down the price is now $59. The best basmati is Daawat which you can buy from Indian grocery stores like mks spices n things in Dandenong (Melbourne). They were having a new years sale last week.

      • how much per kg for Daawat from Indian grocery store please?

    • +2

Not as good as Khohinoor, but I can't seem to find it anymore and the last time I bought it it was $80 for 20kg. If anyone knows where to get it in brisbane please let me know.

    • That's not classic, it's the grade lower.

  • +6

I find the Taj brand at Woolworths much better tasting than Riviana. Of course it's no where near as cheap!

    • +5

True, Riviana taste terrible compared to some other basmati brands.

      • +3

I was about to post the same comment until I saw yours. TAj classic is the best.

        • +1

i find it better than Dawat or India Gate as well.

      • might be the way people are cooking it …… all basmati seems to taste the same once you add some saffron …… biggest variation I get is how much water I added rather than the brand.

        • I did a comparison and there was a big difference between brands. Sunrice was the best of the cheapies. This one was somewhere in the middle.

    • Agree, Taj is the best after tried so many brand.

  • +1

I'm as miserly an Ozbarganer as most and I've bought the 5kg bags for $5 but I think I'd be prepared to spend more per kg, once I've run my stockpile down. A cup of rice as the base of a meal, 25 cents or a dollar?

Stocking up on these bags in preparation for the inevitable zombie apocalypse is of course a prudent course or action.

    • Then there will be a dilemma question, drinking or cooking rice ? I hope you make without being eaten

  • +2

Sorry, no search results were found containing "925427".

  • At first I thought it was 5kg for $8.99 which is normal half price, only then to realise that it's 10kg
This is too cheap to resist

  • Damn, I just bought 5kg of rice last week for $8.75 and then this, why was this not in the woolworths catalogue?

    • Clearance. Special consignment.

  • Wasn't in the Bull Creek (WA) store and now not online either..

    • Went to two stores in no luck (No spot on the shelf suggests this is a clearance item)

    • thanks for the heads up, also trouble finding in WA

  • +1

I would say Daawat is the best out of all premium basmati rice. Yes it's more expensive but tastes way better. Also, some brands I previously tried from Coles/woolies claim that they're basmati but in reality they were not true basmati ( I don't remember exactly brand name tho). India gate classic would be my second choice.

  • +1

Are we taking the food away from the locals …… I thought bangladesh has trouble feeding it's people ……. if we stop buying their rice will the locals have more to eat and we don't need to send foreign aid ?

    • Agreed and for our own backyard…where are our local barra, lobsters, prawns, cherries, mangoes, lamb …. Our Australian families are having more Vietnamese frozen banana prawn and Barra South African lobsters, R2E Instead of Kensington,

    • +1

Apparently a large proportion of foreign aid goes to paying Australians their wages while they do 'service' overseas!

    • So how much does Australia provide Bangladesh as foreign aid??

Taste like crap, give me jasmine rice over this anyday.

  • any tips how to cook Basmati Rice please?

    • +2

Water, rice, rice cooker, electricity, wait.

    • Apply water and heat.

    • With water

    • +1

FWIW I've tried a bunch of different ways with Basmati and IMHO this is the best methodology for the result vs hassle/time.

2 cup basmati (I don't rinse or wash beforehand, IMHO this is only needed with Jasmine/White rice types)
3 cups hot water from tap (water is always 1.5x amount of basmati)
Lil bit salt (optional but I prefer, do to your taste)
Lil bit of any oil e.g 1tsp. (again optional but I prefer)

Give it a few stirs and put lid on, high heat. Once it comes to a boil reduce the heat back to a simmer. 7 mins at this then turn off heat. Leave with lid on for 10mins. Serve. :-)

      • like it - simple. how long/how do you keep the leftover please?

        • +1

Yes, it is very simple - one of the reasons I like it - but also gives very good results.

Leftover rice…? Umm well I tend to find that it's best reheated via microwave in a container or something with a lid with a couple of teaspoons of water put on - leave the lid on a few mins after you've heated for even spread of heat and water content.

2 days max for eating normally - otherwise I'll either make friend rice out of it (which tends to work best with 'stale' cooked rice) or feed to our front yard birds - who are very partial to it.

Great thing is you can find what works for you and the above method is so quick and simple (no rinsing & only ~7mins of ACTUAL cooking, the rest via residual heat) that you can easily justify cooking another batch. :-)

  • +1

I cup off rice first rinse it with water 3,4 times, put in pot which can easily hold another 3,4 glass off water put on stove and let the water boil and add 2 table spoon of oil and 1 table spoon of salt when water starts boiling time it for 5 minutes or you can check the rice is it really soft and long than take off the pot and drain the water there you go have yummy basmati rice.

If you don't drain the water from basmati rice than these rice cannot be any healthy from other rice

  • Than you can add red kidney beans, salad and tuna and a another yummy dish

  • Is this healthy at all, like brown rice? or if someone was watching their waist line this would be like normal white rice and bad for your diet?

    • Basmati rice is good for people with diabetes.

      • thanks for that, but it's not low on carbs?

        • I don't really know much about Basmati rice to tell you the truth. My father has diabetic problems and he was recommended to eat Basmati rice because it is low GI instead of normal long grain rice. You should google it up.

        • @DarkOz: cheers I come up with this, if it,s accurate that's a lot of carbs per 100g

Calorie and Nutrition Values for 100g of White Basmati Rice
          Calories 349
          Protein 8.1
          Carbohydrate 77.1
          Fat 0.6
          Fibre 2.2

        • @yacman: type 1 diabetic dog here. Basmati Rice = Lowest Glycemic Index of any other rice. Less insulin spikes, which really is good for anybody, but doggone awesome for diabetic dogs like me'self.

        • @dogebargain:
I thought Doongara was? I'm getting more bloody diabetic signs myself (frequent urination, thirst; poor wound healing etc) :-( so I'm getting interested. Anyways, Doongara is darn hard to find in the most common stores so I've been sticking with basmati.

        • +1

          @HN Professional:

They both sit at around 50 GI. with that said, taking into account availability and cost, doongara probably isn't quite worth it. Basmati is absolutely fine :)

If you're on the verge of diabetic symptoms, adopt a high veggie and fruit diet and cut back on your meats and dairy - it will most likely usher those symptoms away, provided your pancreas is still able to battle past it.

        • +1

@dogebargain: Veggies yes (except starchy ones), fruits no (only in moderation). The problem with diabetes is sugar, which fruits contain a lot of. Meats and dairy are okay in moderation. You want to avoid excess fat so you don't get fat (also not good for T2DM).

Also you mentioned "diabetic symptoms", but the reality is people usually have diabetes long before they notice symptoms.

        • +1

          @jazoom:

slightly under ripe bananas have a glycemic index of 32. very, very low. fruit sugar and refined sugar are two different things.

Meats and Dairy is another thing, but I don't touch them and have seen vast improvements in sugar level stability. Red Meats have been known to cause diabetes. Red Meat increases type 2 diabetes risk by around 20%, processed meats are up at about 50%. Theres a reason why theres an epidemic, even though people are cutting refined sugars. So many other dangers.

Youre definitely right about the veggies. high fibre grains and veg is the way to go - cleansing foods :)

        • +2

@dogebargain: I don't think people are cutting refined sugars as much as you think. You'd be surprised how many people visit the doctor with a Coke in their hand. (I'm the doctor).

And sugar is sugar, as long as it breaks down to glucose it'll have the same effect.

        • +1

          @jazoom:

Not surprising. maybe i'm a little too optimistic :P

nope you're absolutely right. but in an active lifestyle, the type of sugars do definitely make a difference in insulin spikes. I can have a banana no problems before a workout or bike ride, but a can of coke and i'd have a huge spike then probably a drop. don't drink Coke, but know enough about its ingredients to know how my body would react to it :S

        • @dogebargain: Thanks for the info and sorry for the late reply - been offline for a few days.

    • Brown rice is wholegrain. You can't beat that, for the average Joe.

  • The 25KG bags of long grain I buy is $36/25kg($1.44/kg). Basmati rice is more expensive so it's a great price at $0.90/kg. I am going to stock up later today if I could find any left.

    • Where do you buy a 25kg bag from?

      • You can find them in most Asian grocery stores. Mostly in 25kg bags but some in 20kg bags. The cheapest one is Sun Long which is a long grain by Sun Rice at around $36 the last time I bought some. Most people prefer the premium grade Thai jasmine rice but they are $40-$50/25kg.

  • Thanks OP, I still have 7 x 5kg bags in the cupboard from early last year on a Coles deal(bought 12x which was ~$1.75/kg but when combined with 1st time online shopper rebate it was around $1.40/kg).

But this is an amazing deal, especially as surely EVERY OzBer has discounted WW/Wish cards - snagged another 40kg.

    • Where do you store all this rice?

      • +2

Spare cupboard, doesn't take up that much room (with the extra 4 x 10kg bags it'll be about a 60x80x30cm stack).

Wife loves to make fun of me but we'll see who's laughing when the Zombie apocalypse hits eh? ;-)

        • Haha, won't the cupboard collapse with the extra weight?

  • +1

just to give the heads up.
Went early to my local woollies.
Do not see this on the shelves. Only had 5kg Of this brand for $17.99 or Taj brand for $19.99.
Went to another Woolies - same thing.
Cannot find in this week catalogue.

Spoken to the store, they say this is a discontinued line in their atore.

Stocked up few bags online instead. First order free delivery.

    • did you order it through the product # 925427? It says "No products found" when I use the deal URL.

      • yes, I did use the deal URL. ?sold out or try again.

Have just tried again, still working. I did have problem on payment and called customer service for a manual checkout.

        • it's gone again.. looks like they might have trouble fulfilling in some stores too. I'll give this one a miss .. but thanks for your reply..

Basmati from Woolworths is often not what it is meant to be. I remember buying some rice couple of months back clearly labelled Basmati (brand was Taj I think) but it certainly not basmati. Basmati Rice has long grain and is fragrant which that was not. check the origin - As I remember there was supposed to a geographic control that only rice grown in certain areas can be called basmati. Best Basmati is from himalyan foothills around Dehradoon in north India.

  • What is the difference between India Gate Basmati Rice Harrooz and classic? That's the only one i can find on special. :(

  • Is this riviana brand rice long grains ? Anyone tried cooking it .. don't know if I should bki fly order some online as my local store had none

    • +1

      Enlarged photo for you

      • Thank you very much !!!

  • Wow, is there that much difference in taste between the different brands of basmati? I don't eat it particularly often, so whenever I do, it tastes no different to me.

What should I look for in a basmati? Is Pakistani better?

  • +3

It's very silly. Ordered 3 bags and after one and half days got notification that items are out of stock.

If you can't fulfil the order, why to take it in the first place?

  • +1

Did anyone receive their online order?

Order arrived this morning was 1 case of Crown Lager which I did not place, instead of 4 bags of rice. Both are similar amount.
Driver insisted me to sign even the order was wrong. Called CS and driver came back in 15 mins. A refund was obtained.

Just replaced 2nd - probably won't come as well and got mucked around.

    • Phoned their customer service yesterday to see if able to confirm there are stock which they couldn't and said "if it doesn't say out of stock online, there should be stock." Placed ordered again and received email to say no stocks this morning.

Never have been stock for a while. Just muck customers online.

Bait and switch me to a case of Crownies, I was half tempted to say leave the delivery after all the trouble.

  • Lol at woolies and they are useless

  • +1

I called some stores, Innaloo and Floreat have low stock.
    Stirling/Westminster has a few.
I purchased online click and collect and used the $5 of $50 code.
