SSD Reliability

Hi fellas

got one of the 480GB sandisk ultra II back in a sale 2 months ago and it has already died on me… not detected in bios or anything at all tried different computers and cables etc …. only 2 months old!!!!!

I was using the computer fine that night turned it off as usual.. in the morning turned it on and nothing!

anyone else had any bad luck with there ssd drive?

I seem to have bad luck but I honestly reckon HDD are more reliable then ssd… ive had 3 ssd die on me in the past 5 years … yet I still have hdds that are back from 2008 that are still working lol

is there anyway to tell if the drive is going to die or early symptoms?

  • You got unlucky. Most of the SSDs I've dealt with are quite reliable (apart from old OCZ SSDs). HDDs definitely fail more frequently nowadays.

Check your power supply though - if you have a noisy 5v rail in your computer that could certainly cause issues.

  • u sure it's dead?

have you tried the other power and data cables?

    • yep tried different cables and also in a whole different computer

  • SSDs tend to be reliable these days, especially if you buy from a big brand name such as the one you bought.

This is unlikely but have you kept the same PSU for the 3 dead SSDs? Maybe it's faulty and frying your drives? I can't think of other ways you could have 3 drives fail prematurely except by plain bad luck.

In any case it looks like you'll just have to exchange for another one under warranty. These things happen.

  • I'm planning on getting one of the higher-end SSDs to be sure it doesn't kark it. I have had plenty of mechanical drives die on me so I wouldn't say they're indestructible at all.
I haven't been using an SSD for long so I can't say how reliable they are other than anything must be better than the dozen broken HDDs I have left around.

  • i have the exactly same SSD from the amazon deals installed. might just go back up in case

  • +1

The most reliable are Intel, however they're usually 20-30% more expensive than other brands.

    • I bought mine intel 535 240gb from 20% off Kogan ebay sale for $99 delivered and so far so good

  • Either you have bad luck with SSDs or you have a bad system for SSDs. Like all things in life you do get a dud sometimes. 3 failed SSDs in 5 years is too much.

    • I know right! it's very frustrating

  • A conspiracy from "Big Hard Disk" to discredit the the upstart SSD players. Next we'll be hearing about how SSD is packed full of chemical contrails and was involved in the faking of 9/11 and the moon landing.

    • not sure what you mean but you must have a big collection of tin foil hats

      • +1

Yes, but a tin foil hat didn't help JFK when he got shot for his pro-ssd sentiments. Tin foil lined armadillo hats are the only way to protect yourself.

  • FYI the drives I had failed were OCZ Vertex 2 'E-series' a OCZ Agility 3 and now the Sandisk Ultra II (OCZ's died within 24 months) the Ultra II was 2 months

    • +1

Now that's not surprising lol. Spend a bit more and get intel/samsung.

      • The ocz vertex 2 was $280 and only 128gb so not cheap… The agility 3 was the warranty replacement after it died….. But i thought id have better luck with sandisk and only got 2 months i just cant win here surely sandisk are reliable???

        • +1

Nope. Samsung or Intel and maybe Crucial. Avoid the rest. OCZ is trash. I wouldn't use that if you paid me. They went bankrupt for a reason. Buy an 850 Pro or EVO.

  • The only ssd drive ive had for over 2 years that hasn't failed me is a fujitsu 240gb only downside is i cant get firmware or updates as fujitsu seem to have abandon them

  • Shat! Was pondering beefing up a couple of machines and these sorts of feedbacks put me off…

  • Did you RMA the drive and get a new one under warranty?

    • Yes, all approved and I am waiting on the new one to arrive

      • Good outcome then hope the next one works well! =)

        • Just got the new drive arrive today… installed and working.. lets see how this one goes !

  • update - I've had my replacement drive since Jan 28 and it's still going strong, no problems yet so far.

the first drive must have been a bad one

  • i do a weekly backup of my 1tb sdd to a wd red so that in any event i only lose a weeks data [mainly browsing and gaming so no biggie]
