  • The extra $189.90 is from student discount.

    • +1

I did not apply for it. I am happy with whatever discount they give.

    • It could be that he ordered from the Microsoft US website (payment currency selected as AUD). I'm guessing because at the bottom of the receipt it says "Sales Tax" instead of GST. Though I could be wrong as the tax is 10%. If anyone came across the discount code that works on Au Microsoft website then please share.

  • +1

Haha, the website under "tech specs" says Full HD screen with resolution of 1920 x "1800". That's a very squared looking laptop XD.

  • +4

Eh.. still pretty steep for a rather basic config.

At least it uses a standard M.2 drive that can be upgraded .

  • But the refurbishment version. You can easily buy a i7 8gb 256gb sad model for around 1.7k.

    • +3

You will find that most of the i7 processors will consume battery a fair bit more than i5 processors and with that model you also get the QHD touch screen that also consumes a lot more power, I was after something that can last an entire work day without needing to charge and that model reviews give it about 4 - 5 hours of battery

      • touch screen is good, it means it has glass so it's easy to clean and if things in your bag press on the lid, you don't get key board marks, which happens with my macbook air (plastic screen) but not macbook pro (glass screen).

Seeing more cheap phones with 1080p screens, hope to see more notebooks with 1080p screens …..

My son uses the i5 for his gaming (also has a desktop) and it's actually not bad for a notebook ….. couldn't see us paying extra for an I7 in a notebook.

        • I had the Toshiba p50t (touch screen) and I never used the touch screen, and the reflection from almost everything was horrible and also the fingerprints it attacked…

    • If those are the specs you're after, have a look at the Dell inspiron 13 7000. i7 8gb 500gb ssd for $1299

  • Have you received the cash back yet? I wonder if it would be void because you got the academic discount…

Need the laptop serial number but I have been told by someone at Microsoft that I can still claim the cashback :)

  • +1

I spoke to Microsoft online chat and asked what the discount was for as it was not on the invoice and was told I entered a promotional code at one time and it was applied to that. I still can claim the cashback amount. I don't know what code I entered, I tried a few from a few websites and none seemed to work at the time.

    • Hi there! Very interested in purchasing also, would you be able to share what websites you had a look at? Or maybe the steps you took to get the additional discount. Thanks!!!

      • Maybe OP can post their browser history ;)

  • What do people think of this laptop in comparison?

    http://metabox.com.au/store/b181/N150RD-Overview

    It costs: $1,743.00 but has Intel i7-6700HQ, GTX 960M 2GB DDR5, 15.6" IPS 1920 x 1080, 8GB RAM, 256GB M.2 SSD, 500 HDD, DVD, Windows 10 Home.

    • +4

The metabox is for gaming, this Dell is sleek and very portable which suits people that carry their laptop around. Each has its intended use, different ball parks so to speak

    • +2

It's a very different beast, and they're designed for quite different purposes.

XPS is supposed to be a portable workstation like the MacBook Air - very thin and light, with long battery life and glossy touch screen. The Metabox has a quad-core CPU and dedicated GPU, which is much better suited to gaming and other high-powered applications, but double the weight and with relatively short battery life.

Which one is better depends entirely on what you want from your laptop.

  • +1

Bah, no cashback on the xps 15.

  • too expensive for me :(

  • Typing this on an i5 9350, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. I bought it 2 weeks ago from the Dell Outlet for $1150.

EDIT: Sorry, I lie. Mine is a 9343 (older CPU). Still, I think it's better value.

    • $200 difference from what I paid and the trackpad has been fixed, usb-c, better battery life, faster cpu.

      • Yours is 8GB/256GB? I probably would have paid the extra $200 too, if that's the case. But the newer model wasn't available as as refurb at the time, and I am happy with my purchase.

EDIT: sorry, I see you are the OP, and that you got an additional discount. Well done, but it seems like other people won't get the combined discount.

Either way, the laptop is awesome. Congrats on your purchase.

Costs as much as a macbook.

    • +2

Macbook pro with the same specs is $2300, I bought a pro at the end of last year and just sold it for what I paid for it because it was heavy and awkward on the train and kept freezing after the recent update. I would never buy a mac again

      • +3

        For a 13 inch? I don't know I got my 13 inch retina with 8gb ram and 256gb SSD for about $1600.

If this had 256gb hard drive it would be more appealing. For the record I half regret not getting an XPS.

        • MacBook Pro 13" with Retina screen and i5 processor is $2000 at retail, according to the Apple website. But it's not hard to find 10-15% off, maybe more with a student discount.

The XPS with student discount is less than $1400, which makes this a really great deal. It's actually over 200 grams lighter than the MacBook Pro, which is quite a feat.

        • +1

          @klaw81:

Yeah this is ozbargain though we never pay retail!

$1400 is pretty good but I still feel like 256gb is the minimum we should be going for. Increase the size of the hard drive and it will bump the price up $100 at least. The XPS is awesome for its infinity screen which really brings the size and weight down.

        • What does retina actually mean, is there a minimum spec it needs to be to be called retina by Apple?

Edit: probably easier to say the actual resolutions rather than saying retina so we can compare. Thanks

        • @diddy50: A retina display, based on how Apple markets it, would be any display where individual pixels aren't distinguishable from the next when the device is used at what they consider an appropriate distance. Their different devices as such have different ppi values since a watch or phone will be held closer to the user than say a laptop or desktop.

It is largely marketing speak but and yeah, hard resolution figures makes comparisons easier when used alongside the display size.

        • @Smigit:

Retina display isnt that special. Sure it looks good but it is any other decent quality display. Actually in scenes with lots of black it is hard to make out the details.

        • @Circly: Well it's the same as any other high resolution display. As I mentioned, it's just a marketing term they use when referring to them. All it implies is that the resolution is high enough that at a certain distance pixels don't stand out from one another, e.g. a diagonal line should look smooth not jaggered and curved lines in text should appear smooth etc.

Apple uses the term 'Retina Display' when referring to various different displays they have, including what I believe to be OLED in the Apple Watch which is a different technology to what they use in displays on other devices.

Black levels and the like are a different matter entirely. If Samsung, LG, Sony products were being sold by Apple, they'd also meet the criteria and be referred to as retina models.

        • +1

          @Smigit:

Yeah i know but isheep would tell you it is the best thing since sliced bread.

    • Go and search for the reviews on it and read about the phantom screen touch issues.

I thought 128gb ram for that price

  • Looks thin :-)

  • I'm also interested in getting this laptop but just wanted some further clarification. It says "Only AU$1,549.00** after AU$350.00 cash back when you buy this Windows 10 PC today!" when you click the link. I tried the online chat and they said the same above "Academic 10% offer may not be used in conjunction with cashback offer." You can see the 10% discount from AU$1,899.00 to AU$1,709.10 on the page so $350 cashback from that would be $1359.1. So does that mean you will only get a partial cashback refund that would equate to $1549 only?

    • I think that's the effect of the Ts & Cs stating "Refunds will take into account the discount."

Regardless of whether you say you're a student (which reduces the price to $1,709.10), or use the regular site, the product page still says the final price is $1,549 after cashback. This is consistent with the Ts & Cs. I don't think the OP (or anyone else) will get it any cheaper than $1,549.

  • OP, if you didn't use the student discount, could you kindly check your browsing history to see which promo code you applied so that it wouldn't void the cashback. Thank you

    • try this link, I am not signed into Microsoft store, using incognito mode on my browser and it shows the price
      "AU$1,709.10 incl. GST
      (was AU$1,899.00) save : AU$189.90"

      http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/Dell-XPS…

      • its the student disc being applied. doesnt matter even if u use incognito. try other browser and it will come up as 1899…but worth a try 2 apply student discount and try cashback.
I did chat with them and they said cant claim both :-( I am not risking it then until someone confirms :-)

  • +2

Let us know if you end up getting the cashback and how much porsche804!

    Thanks

  • The cash back amount has changed for the laptop I'm looking at… Was $200 cash back now $150…

  • Did you received your cashback OP . I have been told my MS chat support that you will be declined cashback if you get student discount.

    • still waiting for the cashback, it says it can take up to 60 days after the application. I asked when the discount was for when I was making the purchase and was told I entered a discount code that I don't remember doing, I made sure I saved the chat afterwards so if they want to decline the refund then I will dispute it.

      • +1

Discount code ? Which one , I only see option of selecting ur school and then it takes u to shop page . I am not getting any discounts or discount code that I can apply.

        • In checkout, down the bottom left.

        • @porsche804: Ah OK. Thanks . Do you what was the code ?

  • Is this one with a touch screen?

  • Is this as good as the macbook air? Im going to purchase one or the other and theyre both the same price.

    • My wife has the Macbook air and prefers my xps, it feels nicer and does not have an inch bezel all around the screen, also I can play all the games I have on it without an issue, she tried the sims and the fan in her Macbook air just goes nuts. I don't see a reason someone would buy a Macbook air.
