    do almonds even drink milk?

    • +12

They would, but dont have alms.

    • Only when they're breastfed…

Ingredients List: Filtered Australian Water, Organic Almonds (3%), Organic Agave Syrup, Organic Sunflower Oil

You are really buying "milky" water

    • +2

Yeah, I found this brand very watery. Better off buying raw almonds and firing up the blender.

      • +1

The other ingredients add sugar and fat.

    • +3

I was quite partial the the ocassional splurge on almond milk a few years back until actually reading the label and discovering there's only a tiny handfull of almonds in the product. Total BS it's allowed.

      • +3

Yes, we should ban it because you didn't read the label and had totally made up, excessive expectations about what it was made of.

        • -1

          Nuh, it is misleading advertisement.
They should have said Almond flavored water instead of Almond milk.

I have similar experience as well, one of the Vitasoy Soy milk used to have GMO logo but now its gone.

    • +7

Cow milk is also mostly water. Thats what milk is; water with a small amount of sugar and fat.

      • -1

It's still 100% cows milk though.

        • +4

This product is 100% almond milk, says it right on the label just like the cows milk does.

        • +1

The REAL question is how do you milk an almond

        • +1

@maxmoustache: Some baby almonds will just have to go without.

  • +3

Nothing beats Almond Breeze by Blue Diamond Almonds. It froths better than other brands for coffees. I would love an Aussie brand that could match this quality.

    • -4

I bet it tastes great in your weak orange frappacino latte.

    • I also find Almond Breeze to froth the best of all store-purchased almond milk (I like the vanilla almond milk in my latté).
Bonsoy froths the best of the store-purchased soy milk I have tried, but I have issues digesting it (any soy milk actually).

    • Almond Breeze was 3 for $5 a couple of weeks ago ($1.66) at woollies.

  • lol 5% almond and 95% non-almond

  • +6

Lots of people talk about how it's mainly just water, but what's the alternative? 100% almond milk no water?
If you like the taste and you need a dairy free alternative to milk, almond milk can be a good, low calorie option.
As some have said, you can make your own almond milk fairly easily too without the additives if that matters to you, though at this price it's cheaper than making your own.

PS what's milk mostly made up of anyway?

    /rant

    • +3

… you need a dairy free alternative to milk …

but, besides being white, this is not in any way an alternative to milk - unlike (even cheapest, Coles) Soy Juice (ala. "Milk"), it has protein, no A, B12 or Calcium vitamins added to provide equivalency. It really is, flavoured water.

        • Nice link ;)

The thing about milk and soy milk is that they are nice enough to drink straight, without adding to anything else. I once tried almond milk and it was just horrible. Never again.

        • +1

Utter bullshit, except one fact - there isn't a dairy farmer alive who wouldn't like Soy Juice to disappear off the supermarket shelves.
Anyone willing to spread FUD or disparaging anecdotes about Soy and other alternatives for (high profit margin) human consumption is welcomed. Ironically, they don't have any issues with Soy for (low cost) consumption by their livestock.

          @AlexF: Yeah it's a satire website.

        • @snackerjoe:

          Yeah it's a satire website.

hence the "Utter bullshit …" except the single, poignant fact.

        • @snackerjoe: really? soy nice enough to drink alone?

Soy is probably the most difficult to get used to IMO, with the most strong flavour of any of the milk alternatives I've found. I'm sure there's people that learn to like it, and I've heard there's a new brand that is much more mild than the horrible stuff I've tried on and off since the 80s.

Cow's milk is also surprisingly strong too when you've not drunk it for years. Most people will just be used to the taste, but it hits you when you're not used to it.

Most goat's milk has a strong after taste, but that really depends on what the goats have eaten. I've had sources where there's no aftertaste, just a smooth flavour less strong than cow's milk.

Oat milk tends to be pretty mild IMO depending on the brand. Almond milk is somewhere in the middle.

        • @RJK: Recommend Bonsoy if you want a soy milk you can drink alone. Fun side story Bonsoy was using Kombu (kind of seaweed) in their milk for years which resulted in extremely high iodine levels and some regular drinkers becoming very sick. Lost a $20m class action law suit in Aus. They've reformulated since then but it's still delicious.

      • +4

Agreed that it doesn't come close to matching it nutritionally, however I have tried water with my muesli and unlike almond milk, it is horrible. "Alternative" rarely means 1:1 substitute.

        • +1

Exactly. Most people I know use milk alternatives just for the normal uses: tea, cereal, baking, etc.

    • what's milk mostly made up of anyway?

if u need dairy free milk buy dairy free milk

it exists in pretty much all supermarkets

      • lactose free milk is different from dairy free milk.

        • +1

you can buy that as well…..

  • I like dogs. Doesn't mean I like dogs' milk.

Just get lactose-free milk. They've added the enzyme for you.
if someone "hates dairy", why would they want a bad imitation?

The label says "gluten free", which suggests the target market for this is very gullible people.
Maybe the dairies could retaliate by labelling their milk "cyanide free", as almonds contain all-natural cyanide.

    • +3

Lactose is not the only issue people have with digesting dairy. The proteins can cause some people a lot of grief also. And some of these people also have issues with the proteins in soy "milk".

Personally, I find almond milk just a tad too sweet. I prefer oat milk for most purposes.

      • +4

        oat milk

Pft.. You mean oats with added water.

        </sarcasm>

    • +2

Dogs milk is the best. I drink it straight out of the dog.

    • It's not an imitation. It's an alternative, ie. something you would use in place of. It's not meant to taste like milk.

"Gluten free" doesn't mean that the target market is vulnerable. Some processed drinks containing nuts have added thickeners or maltodextrins. People who can't tolerate gluten actually appreciate clear labelling like this.

    • @manic
Because lactose isn't the only property of cow's milk that causes problems for some people. It's not that hard to inform your opinion by the way.

I definitely understand why all these things must seem like fads to those who have always thought "food is food", but there are well established reasons for people who have chosen to avoid dairy or grains. Milk allergies and intolerances are increasingly common, and there's a growing body of evidence to suggest that cow's milk consumption isn't ideal for humans. Some people like baked goods, but don't want to or can't use milk for various reasons - simple as that.

should put quantity (1L) in the title

    • Thanks for the reminder. Done.

    For those of you who:

    Hate Dairy

who could possibly hate dairy? cream mmm zomg!

  • Nuts over milk is a better brand.

  • Does anyone know if the "unsweetened" almond milk is also on special?

Couldn't find it on Coles online store. I know woolies sell it.

    This deal is nuts!

Many years ago I read all these bloggers commenting on how Almond Milk was one of the best tasting milk-alternatives (as well as cashew nut, which doesn't appear to be commercially available yet).

I think it was So Good Almond Milk I tried at half-price and it tasted and felt very watery. Though I suppose unsweetened soy milk with no thickening agents (like maltodextrin) are pretty watery too and taste like liquid plastic.

It seems the prerequisites for being called milk are limited to its colour (and protein and mineral content are ignored).

    • It seems the prerequisites for being called milk are limited to its colour (and protein and mineral content are ignored).

There is dairy milk and plant milk.

    • I bought an Almond Breeze one from Woolworths the other week that was almonds and cashew. I'll be buying it more often now, it's much better than So Good (and So Good is better than Australia's own)

  • Zero calcium, great alternative

  • My local Coles (Potts Point) sold out of this the first day it went on special. As with most 1/2 price deals, they won't restock until next week when it's back up to full price.

    Are the almonds activated?

    • +1

I checked, they appear pretty lifeless.. :(

  • FYI - Almond milk at home: Almonds (soaked overnight), filtered water, a few dates (for sweetness) and sea salt + vanilla bean (optional). Blend, then pour the mixture into a nut bag/fine strainer to filter. Percentage of almond to water ratio is what you play with, I did about 1 cup almonds to 3-4 cups water. EDIT: Was going to call it ozbargain milk in jest however I don't recall turning much of a profit over the store bought almond milk, not enough to warrant a name like OZBARGAIN MILK anyway. But it does taste a sh*tload better

  • +1

sunflower oil in almond milk = no no, reason being it's omega 6 and inflammatory.

almond milk production is also really energy and resource consuming for the amount of nutrient it provides.

  • I wish the store bought ones are not as watered down, it is the reason why I still take the trouble to make my own cos it really does taste wayyyy better than any of the store bought ones. I add some salt and pinch of ground cinnamon to mine when blending.

  • Love almond milk but is it true the processed ones from supermarkets have a carcinogen agent? Am I safe buying organic almond milk from supermarket shelves? I stopped drinking after that and now back to skim dairy.

    • Well almonds contain cyanide… But not enough to kill you. :P

      • +1

        Did you know?

100% of the people who drink water, die.

        So don't drink water :P

  • Anyone want some water milk? Just pour a glass of tap water into your blender and blend for 1 minute.
    Delicious water milk!

    • Riiiiight….

  • I love this brand more than most. Thanks OP.

  • Almost every single non-cow or goat derived milk on the market is supplemented with sunflower oil, canola oil or carrageenan, which I'm led to believe are about as good for you as a nuclear blast.

I am not a food scientist or nutritionalist, but I'd advise you do some research before incorporating these additives into your daily milk consumption.

The only Almond Milk without these additives is a new brand I've just found literally yesterday in Woolworths (and am not affiliated with) called Nutty Bruce. Check it out.

It's pretty crazy how much interest/opinion this post has stimulated. Never my intention, but all good nonetheless. Maybe this deal needs a poll haha!
