Board games for 4+ people?

My wife and I have been getting into board games and inviting over our friends, usually 4 to 8 people total.

We play cluedo, cranium, scattegories, monopoly, logo and taboo.

Are there any other board games that anyone can recommend?

twister, spice it up - be naked

Why was I thinking this exact same thing??

  • +5

Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, Settlers of Catan

They each have cheap apps you can use to get a feel for the game before you buy

If you set up an alert on gumtree or eBay it doesn't take long to find secondhand either

    • These three are regulars at our place.

      They're heaps of fun!

  • +5

Maybe try keys in the bowl…

  • Codenames, coup, one night ultimate werewolf, and cash n guns are some fun party board games.

Betrayal at House on the Hill is a pretty fun game for 3-6. Good replay value too.
Articulate is similar to Taboo but with Trivial Pursuit-esque categories.
Resistance is similar to Coup, Werewolf or Mafia.
King of Tokyo is an easy to learn dice rolling game.

    Cards against Humanity

older people don't get this game though. It's kinda pointless when you've got to explain every card.

      • And a few of the original edition reference U.S. pop culture that no one really gets. We usually weed out about 20 cards beforehand. However, I've heard good things about the Aus Edition!

  • Not sure if it counts, but I used to play Dungeons & Dragons back in the day, so many good times. I know it might sound geeky and anti social but it is far from it. Otherwise Cards against humanity is fun. Most card games I find are good like 500 or canaster

  • Articulate. Hearts. Texas hold 'em. Warlords and Scumbags.

Dominion. One Night Ultimate Werewolf. Munchkin is popular. Risk.

    How about Risk?

Avalon! Great fun, needs at least 5 players. Easy to learn.

  • I recently played Star Fluxx for the first time. There are other versions like Monster Fluxx, Adventuretime Fluxx, Pirate Fluxx, Stoner Fluxx, Monthy Python Fluxx etc.

Fluxx refers to the fact that the goals and rules of the game change depending on the cards you play. For someone like me who is overly-focussed on rules in life, this game was a challenge but super-fun.

    P.S. These are card games.

  • Squatter

  • Balderdash can be fun.

  • Snakes and ladders naked

  • Have a look at Rummiking , 2 to 4 players, great fun.

Where's the best place to buy Ticket to Ride, 7 Wonders, Betrayal at House on the hill etc?

Try online. Games paradise, ozgameshop, book depository, amazon. The drop in the $ has made online less competitive than it was a few years ago. If you're getting something from amazon you'd probs want to get a few as the shipping is pretty high, but doesn't increase much with each additional game.
Local stores might be ok too. In Perth there's Good Games and Tactics, not sure about other Cities.

      • Thanks! But yeah, the $ is making them very expensive :(

I have had good experiences with gamesempire.com.au

Yet to try gameology.com.au but the owner sometimes posts on ozbargain, seems responsive

Spent last night playing 7 wonders, very good! Download the calc app though to add up, much easier than paper.

Startrek catan if you like Startrek, even if you dont its hell fun and you dont need to know Startrek to play, same as SOC just Startrek prettys.

For 4 tsuro is quick and fun, sending people off the edge Nd all.

  • Mexican Train - a dominos based game. The dominoes are not your "average" set, they go to 15 numbers on a tile - 136 tiles to a set.

A lot of fun, easy to play but like chess skill you can become a master player if you learn the strategies

    From Wikipedia

    Equipment
A double-twelve set of dominoes is marketed as the standard for Mexican Train, and accommodates up to 8 players. Other sets are commonly used as well. The following alternate sets are common, depending on the number of people playing:

    Double-Six (2 players)
    Double-Nine (2–4 players)[1]
    Double-Twelve (5–8 players)[1]
    Double-Fifteen (9–12 players)
    Double-Eighteen (13+ players)
In addition to dominoes, the game also requires:

One token or marker for each player
A special spacer, known as the "station" or "hub", used to evenly space the trains around the central domino (optional).
Pencil and paper to keep score
Many sets of dominoes include a station and special train-shaped tokens for markers, and packaged games with a central "station" and custom tokens are available. However, the station piece is not strictly needed, and anything from coins to poker chips to even pieces of candy or slips of paper can be used as markers.

    Objectives
The object of all Trains games is to be the first player to place all of their dominoes. Dominoes may be placed onto the player's train, onto the Mexican train if available, or on the trains of other players under special circumstances.

  • Try PIT if a card game is ok, or does it have to be a boardgame? PIT is simple fun with not many rules, loud and lots of laughs.

  • +1 for Settlers of Catan, and definitely for Pandemic. Both very family-friendly, and with Pandemic you work together rather than against each other (meaning either everyone wins, or everyone loses - no hurt feelings at the end of the night ;)

Also recommend a couple of great group card games -

Love Letter (and any variations, there are Batman ones, Lord of the Rings ones etc. but all the same game)
Exploding Kittens (get the red "child-friendly" box. The "Adults Only" version just adds a bunch of crudity and toilet humour).

  • We recently played Codenames which is a lot of fun, and can be played with 4 players, and easily scale up to 8.

It's a word deduction game, where players are split into 2 groups. Each group has a leader (or spymaster)

A 5x5 grid of words (the game comes with 200 cards with 400 words) is created, and the 2 leaders look at the secret key, to find out which words belong to their respective teams. The leaders then give a clue (a single word) to their team to try and guess which words belong to their team, and a number for how many words it relates to).

A clue of "Fruit, 2" would obviously mean apple and banana if they were options. A clue of "Mordor, 4" could relate to Ring, Mountain, Tower and New Zealand. These are simple examples, but with the variability and the words on offer, there's basically unlimited replayability.

There is 1 word, however, which is the assassin, and if your team guesses that, they immediately lose.

It's easy to explain to new players, and it's a game where knowledge of how it works doesn't benefit players. You need to try and pick clues which your teammates will be able to figure out.

    Chinese Checkers.

    • this is a great game, and requires very little teaching.

I'd recommend watching Tabletop. It's a great web series where Wil Wheaton plays a board game with some random minor celebrities. Not only is it fun to watch, but it basically teaches you a majority of the selected game without having to open the instruction booklet.

But that aside, Ticket to Ride: Europe, Alhumbra, Dixit, Pandemic or even Zombie Dice are a good start, and are all featured in Tabletop.

  • My favourites: Articulate, Agricola, Pictionary

You have to play Avalon, it will not only create new bonds but destroy all friendships and the years of trust you have built up with friends. Funniest game once you get the hang of it/understand tactics to pull off with mates. Trust no one. Especially your partner.

Saboteur is also a lot of fun if you're playing with 4+ people. You need to play a couple rounds before you start to get tactics to work together or the saboteur will just end up getting bullied every time. Also the game is very cheap, I think I got it for less than $8.

Coup is also another fun bluff game for 4+ people but it really depends on your group. Unfortunately my group is made up of 3 other couples who just end up making teams, or if I play with the full group most people are too friendly to "coup" and it just becomes a take turns to attack whoever attacked you first.

A more hardcore game would be Betrayal at house on the hill, it plays off scenarios but you need to really be into it and it takes a lot of time to get the group ready as there is plenty of rules and situations. Interesting game but you need to be in the mood for it.

If I had to get 2 games it would be Saboteur and Avalon, both are must plays.

    Hope you have fun!

  • If you are up for some non-traditional mediums, you can try Jack Box Party Packs 1/2 (1 is better with Fibbage and Drawful). Which is sold on all later gen consoles and the PC. Each party pack has around 5 boardgame-esque games which are all hilarious.

Unfortunately everyone needs a smartphone to play.

Amongst traditional boardgames, Saboteur 2 is probably my favourite. With close friends and a little bit of drinking, Imaginiff is also excellent

  • I've always found the Jackbox party packs some cheeky fun depending on who you play with. You view the board so to speak on a larger monitor so everyone can see, so you would probably need more cables to hook up a computer or laptop to a TV when playing. Or you can view from the computer screen. I'm sure most people will have smartphones or tablets at their disposal as you have to go to jackbox.tv and enter a game room code to play together. My favourites would be Fibbage and Defibrillator

  • I personally like short games rather than long draggy games

    My favourites are
Saboteur - very quick game (around 20 minutes each round) and very easy to pick up
Bang - longer but also really fun, and probably involves more strategy than Saboteur
Takenoko - very cute game involving bamboos and pandas

  • Ticket to Ride, Catan, Codenames & Takenoko - all great games!

used to be called billionaire. Really quick to pick up and good fun to see people play.

Spent 2 hours playing it last week…

  • I really enjoy Eclipse, Race for the Galaxy and Power Grid.
