That's a lot of data and a lot of international calls. If you don't need so much data/calls, consider this:
    - the iphone costs $1229 which is $51.20 / month (over 24 months)
    - the ipad costs $829, or $34.54 / month (over 24 months, assuming the wifi version, $7 more for the cellular version)

So in total it's $85/month. And if you can find a suitable plan cheaper than $60/month you might be better off buying the devices yourself.

    • both are lte
so to buy both you need to lay out well over 2k upfront

      • +3

True. I can't edit my post so here's my updated calculations for the cellular iPad:

        $51.20 (iphone) + $41.20 (ipad) = $92.40/month, over 24 months. Paying $2058 upfront.

So if you can find a suitable mobile plan for less than $52 then this deal might not be for you. There, how's that for accuracy? :)

        • cheers.
          but i'll skip this.

        • I think this bundle allows two sims though, for data sharing??

In which case, you might need to buy two plans or get a 2-sim plan, which would be pricey.

I'm not interested in buying so someone else can check that out.

        • @justtoreply: Data sharing is a one-off $5 with any optus plan, i think… including prepaid

    • -1

The other variable will be whether you're better off getting just the phone in a plan and buying the iPad outright, or vice versa. I'm not sure what single device plans are going.

    • You must be rich paying full RRP when you do shopping.
      Jealous!

  • Does this allow tethering? I currently pay $90/month for mobile broadband via a 4G USB stick (22gb quota). Only $55 more to get an iPhone 6s and an iPad Air 2 +cellular seems like a good deal if I can tether my laptop to the iPhone…

    • Get a mobile 4g access point. Use the iPad Sim in that. Portable wifi

      • Right, I easily know the tech details of installing a SIM card anywhere that can take a SIM card (bought my first modem in 1983, started my area's first ISP in 1994 ;-), but the question is, does the Optus network do something to detect whether a device is in use that is not a phone or tablet, and rule it illegal, or does Optus allow users to use this plan as a pure network data SIM as opposed to a tablet data SIM? I believe I've heard that they did detect non-tablet usage and cancel SIMs, in connection with their $2 days or $3 days.

        • That I'm not sure. I don't use optus anymore. What I usually do is get a phone on a plan and sell the phone and continue to use the sim in my iPhone. Used sim in mifi and was never a problem.

        • I really would not worry about this.

      • +1

Better still, you can pool data with Optus. Ring Optus and ask them to add an additional SIM to your plan, $5 once off fee I think. And that's it. This way you get to use all your quota between iPhone+iPad+SIM (where you use the SIM in your existing USB stick).

And yes, you can tether from iPad and iPhone at no cost, it just uses your pool of quota.

You can pickup a pocket wifi modem on the cheap, ozbargainers have got some for $7 on here, otherwise $30-40 can at least get you something. Then just pop that SIM inside.

        • Thanks for that — Didn't know the plan had data pooling. I've got an entire box full of 3G, 4G USB sticks and wifi boxes, so that'll work well for me!

    • You can buy a Pocket wifi
or if you need more data

Optus has an option 70$ for 50GB Data on pocketwifi.

Data is shared so you can tether it from your iphone Too.
      .

Let me know in case you need this deal can get 1or 2 months free too.

      Thanks

      • Is that truly with Optus as the company I'd contract with, or with another provider I'd contract with who uses the Optus network? $70 for 50GB pocket wifi sounds interesting. Not sure which deal will work better for me. (Sorry, just saw the notifications today…)

        • Yes its with OPTUS.

  • I would think so as it is a standard optus plan so should be no different

  • this is the offer for millionaire, not for me, thanks

    • +2

      I understand your joke :)

But really, I know lots of people who have iPads and stuff and aren't millionaires (I know a 3 year old boy who has his own iPad).

And because of crazy house prices half of Sydney are millionaires now.

$145/month for just one of the many on-going household spending is a lot to ask for.

    • -2

These plans are targeted at people who are failures at maths and economics.

$145 per month is a ridiculous amount to pay for a 64GB iPad and an iPhone. Having them lost or damaged means a massive ongoing commitment for something that doesn't even exist any longer. 24c months is a long time.

It's cheaper to purchase these devices outright and then shop around for a SIM. Preferably prepaid, as that gives better overall value on the connection. Most importantly there is nothing locked in, so there is flexibility to change to a better deal (Optus mobile data = shit) or if circumstances change (eg: lost job).

      • yep but you need $2000 upfront plus lose the interest received on this

        • ROFL @ Interest ??

You'd be pushing to get 5% per annum in ANY savings account. If you actually had $2000 then you'd be repaying a Credit Card or other loan, not leaving it in the bank.

Whilst the potential interest lost is irrelevant, the savings you'd make by not contracting would more than cover any interest.

And if you don't have $2000, you'd still be better off putting the $2000 on a low interest Visa/MasterCard (eg: ME @ 10% pa) and paying it off over 24 months it'd cost you an average of $2000 + 10% = $2200 / 24 = $91.66 per month.

That still leaves you $145 - $91.66 = $53.33 per month for your SIM.

But the main advantage is… you ARE NOT LOCKED IN FOR TWO YEARS, and you don't have to put up with the shithouse Optus mobile data and call reception.

        • @llama:
Leave money in an offset account tax free set off against your mortgage lets you pay off house quicker

        • @llama:
Your interest repayments are incorrect for the credit card
Repayment at 10% over two years is $93/month
And your locked into debt which negatively impacts your credit score

        • -3

          @aussman:

Your interest repayments are incorrect for the credit card
Repayment at 10% over two years is $93/month

ROFL… WOT? Great example of why these kinds of deal attract people who are bad at maths.

$91.66 or $93 is irrelevant when the difference in overall cost is hundreds over the 2 year period.

And your locked into debt which negatively impacts your credit score

So you're saying that being locked into $92 or $93 per month repayment (which can be extended or paid off earlier at will) is worse than being locked into a fixed $141 per month contract? Hmmmm….

      • I don't get it, if you buy outright and you lost/damage the device, is that mean you get your money back?

        • -1

No, of course not. However if you bought it on a plan, then your repayments don't stop if you loss/damage the device.

The difference is… if you couldn't afford to buy it in the first place, then how could you afford to replace it? Even if you don't replace it, you still have a $141/mth commitment to deal with.

        • @llama: Ic, so IF I can afford it then this is a better deal than buying outright, right?

  • Amazing deal and the first ever unlimited minutes to Pakistan!!!

    Optus deal is:

Unlimited texts and mins to Oz/countries as above + 26gb data yep 26gb data!
    IPad Air2 64gb.
    Iphone 6s 64gb.
    $145/month.

    I'm currently paying $55/month iPad Air with 4gb data Telstra + $80/month voda iPhone 6 128gb with 9gb data + unlimited mins/texts in Oz + 300 international mins so $135/month total.

This is an amazing deal for only $10/month extra - all that data and the unlimited international minutes!!!

  • if you can easily pay up-front, do it by all means, it's for people paying monthly, and this is competitive. No need to tell people failed math as if they don't know how to add up numbers. There is always pros and cons of this …
