Cheapest Option to stay a night and a day in Melbourne

So my plans for Melbourne fell through when a friend dropped out, and I now need to stay an extra day in Melbourne on the 24th night until midday the next day when I catch a flight back to Brisbane.

I've been looking at backpackers, but they're all in the $40 range, so I'm thinking I should just not bother getting accommodation - in which case I would need to store my bag someplace for the duration.

Damn Melbourne is an expensive place to visit. The flights are bad enough, but then you get stuck with a minimum $40 just to get to the city from the airport.

Are there any good 24/7 places to hangout in near the city?

Thanks for any tips :)

    $40 is expensive? Wow.

The last 2 weeks of January are absolute peak time as the Australian Open is on (Saturday 24th being the busiest), not to mention its also peak tourist season. Also you don't need to take the Skybus($36/RT). You can take the train/bus for a few dollars, see this thread.

The AO festival is on near Melbourne Park by the river. That will be open pretty late where you can sit and chill.

There are luggage lockers at Southern Cross Station (where you get off the skybus). Leave your bags there and then head to the casino. Pack a rug/beach towel and have a daytime nap in the botanic gardens.

    • I did that similar in Valencia in Spain. Except it was really just a small park on a bit of a big round about thing.

  • Go to the airport a day earlier and sleep on the ground or find a one night stand.

I have a free YHA overnight voucher if you want it. The voucher says original voucher must be presented on check in.
