Easy Way to Find out When I Got My Full Licence? (Car Insurance Quote Question)

Hi All,

Car insurance quotes (e.g. Woolworths) ask the question: at what age the main driver first got their full licence (not P). I genuinely cannot remember. Before I embark on more official channels (like contacting VicRoad licences) to find out, is there an easy way to find this info? Like some official gov site I can logon to?

Also, how accurate does this info needs to be for a quote, is an estimate good enough?

Many thanks for your input.

did you get a 3 or 5 year renewal? (in NSW its 3 or 5 year renewal) owork backwards from that

i.e expiry, 5 years, then if you didn't get another renewal, ur p's and l's
    that should be approximately right

    • Thanks, that's an idea!

  • seriously? you can't remember? to within a few months….wow

    • you must be still young … wait till a few decades have passed :-)

i'm 47, have moved countries 3 times, had 12 cars at last count, but i know i passed my test in the last half of 1985

that's how i answer questions about my licence

to the best of my ability

        anything else would be untrue

i'm guessing you're older than me? if so, then if you reply to the insurance company that you got your licence before you were 20 (for instance) then that would be a true reply

I dont blame OP, i only had license for 3-4 years and I struggle to remember already. Heck, I struggle to figure out how old I am when someone ask lol my excuse is because I was born on December. I guess some people are just genuinely not good with years

OP I reckon an estimate would be enough, if you have been a full license for over 10 years, I dont think it makes much difference. You could try getting 2 quotes, one with 20 and one with 40 to see if there are differences. i am interested to know too :D

        • Wow, you have an amazing memory then. Probably better than the average person :-).

Thanks for the tip about answering. Has to check if it is a field allowing free text, or if it is a drop-down list with discrete ages to choose from.

        • @Azn310:

I can relate to what you say about remembering dates/age etc :-) - and the brain seems to deteriorate even further as the days go by.

Actually, it is not so much the policy price difference I am concerned about, but whether it has any effect on claims. Whether an insurance company can use technicalities like inaccurate info, on aspects that should have little relevance, to reduce/delay/deny claims.

          @bluesky:

If your in your 40`s and you say you got your licence at 17, and it was actually when you were 18, can you really see that making a big difference.
If you said you got you licence at 39, that would make a difference……

        • @albanyson: I sort of think so too, but thought I'd ask anyway, in case it is an easily obtainable piece of info.

  • Isn't the date you got your licence on your card? I'm in WA and mine is, just add a year or whatever to that.

    • No, this info is not on the VIC licence. Handy to have that on the WA licence.

I just checked. My WA licence only has expiry date……no start date….

Really? On the back mine says 'issued in Western Australia blah blah' and gives the date I passed my test. It was in 2000 though so maybe they don't do it for earlier ones. It's been on there on all the licenses I've had including the newer style.

          @Talonparty:
          Yep, correct you are….!!
          Was going to say
“Nope, def not on mine. Expiry 2018, so couple years old.”
And just had a more thorough look….just above the codes….in the really Really small writing.
          (currently eating humble pie)

          Correct you are

The big expiry date was what caught my eye

Maybe time for the eyesight test

        • @albanyson: I'm going to scrutinize mine now :-) I have bad eyesight, and I often miss things … Nope, definitely not for the VIC licence. But wish it has this info.
