Wine Club Recommendations

Used to have a 3 monthly wine delivery of a mixed dozen from Winephoria, who have since gone bankrupt I believe. My contact details were passed on to Vinomofo who have approached me to take over the 3 monthly delivery.

Does anyone else subscribe to these plans and/or have any recommendations? Looking to spend no more than $160 per delivery.
I prefer the wine plans as i hate going to the bottle shop and standing there trying to pick out different wines.

I prefer the wine plans as i hate going to the bottle shop and standing there trying to pick out different wines.

While I get the 'hate standing there trying to pick out different wines', I really don't understand why people go for wine plans/clubs. There are so many avenues nowadays for purchasing wine that you really don't need to be taking whatever gets sent to you - remember, most mixed packs and plans end up with ordinary wines that benefit the company (e.g. returns from other orders, bin ends, poor vintages, slow-selling stock, dumped stock with high margins etc etc) rather than the individual

Personally, if you're outsourcing someone else to choose your wines for you, you're already behind the eight-ball. Unless you personally know and trust your wine club broker, it's best to do a little research and purchase yourself. For example, follow threads in here http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/frequent… (the vinomofo and dan murphys threads especially) for insight on some great value stuff from experienced buyers.

If you still really wanna go down the 'club' route, look at winedirect, naked wines, even david jones and myer have wine clubs! There's cellarmasters (owned by woolworths) but those guys are not a good bunch. I;m sure there are many many more, these are just off the top of my head.

  • Have a read about Naked Wines. Mostly positive stories around, open business model, great way to support smaller wineries, easy to cancel, and great wine (my personal experience).

    • My wife subscribes to this. They're pretty good.

    • Hi,

I posted a deal back in October https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/216600
about Naked Wines but the OzBargain referral links are still there).

Anyway, the wines are pretty good, I like the Mixed offerings because I can try new wines from emerging winemakers and support them.

I hope you find some nice wines.

I used to use Naked, but not since I switched to Vinomofo. You'll get much better value there I would say…

        • Can you please clarify? In your opinion, better value there - there meaning Vinomofo? (since you switched to it), or Naked Wines? Thanks. I have tried Naked Wines as well, but not Vinomofo.

@bluesky: I don't use the Vinomofo club, I buy by the case. But I find that Vinomofo is able to source really great quality wines that often come with high wine critic ratings, for a fantastic price and which you can also cellar if you like. Naked Wines quality is more a cleanskin quality, they're not rated, they're only produced for the company. Vinomofo seems to have the buying power now to source very desirable, quality wines at competitive prices. They really know their stuff. I would have a lot more confidence in their selections, even if they do slip in a few slow sellers.

        • @Sweet3st: Thanks, I see what you mean. I occasionally see Vinomofo deals posted here, not regular club deals. Those must be the bargain deals to look for(?)

        • @bluesky: Yes, it's worth keeping an eye on posts here and the Frequent Flyer thread mentioned above. Also, if you haven't used Vinomofo before you can get $25 referral credit off your first purchase. You're welcome to use my code… I can't post it here but if you look back at my past Vinomofo posts you'll find it. There is also a wiki of referral codes if you want to go random.

        • @Sweet3st: Sure, no worries. I will certainly keep you in mind for the referral when I am ready to try them. Thanks :-)

  • i just follow the booze deals here.

I'll point out what was a great deal -Parsons Paddock $36 for 6 bottles of cab sav or shiraz. ordinarily $13/14 at 1st choice, dan muprhy more.

the shiraz is great, the cab sav is even better.

should have stocked up on more.

I work for an online company called winedirect.com.au and so as to not have a bias opinion, vinomofo do come up with some brilliant wines. One of my family members used Naked wines, but they can be really hit and miss. getwinesdirect.com.au are a bit the same but tend to have more quaffing quality stuff very cheap similar to Naked wines although you can sometimes pick up a real bargain.

As a reference point, I am subscribed to all of the online merchants, it really pays to shop around. Some places will have amazing offers periodically. Vinomofo and ourselves use a tasting panel and only supply wines that we have sampled and think are of high quality and represent great value. I am a firm believer in only selling products that I have 100% confidence in and stick by a 100% satisfaction guarantee, i.e. I would hate for a customer to ring me up and say they hated some wine that I recommended.

From a business point of view, I view Vinomofo as our biggest competitors on the online scene but we rarely stock the same products. We operate on a smaller scale than them, but pride ourselves on the satisfaction of the customers that we have. If you know what you like, having an account manager like myself, or I'm sure Vinomofo have a similar account managers that can match wines to your particular taste and provide cellaring recommendations and serving suggestions eg. decanting etc.

I'd be happy to answer any more questions you might have if you want to flick me an email at [email protected]

    • It's funny you should post, because I'm pretty sure I'll go with winedirect.com.au, vinomofo are out of stock of their mix wine club package and your Premium Wine Club Mixed seems a reasonable value.

      • well there you go haha. Flick me an email Matthew, I'll see what I can do for you. There might be more I can do for you
