Travelling to USA in Mid/Late June 2106. Buy Now or Cheaper Flights Will Probably Happen in Next Few Months?

I've got a wedding in New York in July and would like to go over early to go to LA and Vegas beforehand at the end of June.
I've been looking at flights the last week and most of them with decent carriers are up around the $1800-2000 mark. Are these just high while the demand for these flights is low/average or will they get worse?

It seems inevitable that some decent carriers will post deals of stuff under $1500 right?

Anyone travel to the USA in late June/July last year? If so, did cheaper fares come around closer to your departure month? (ie April/May)?

    Most of the deals you will see here (if any more come) would be for flights from east cost of AU to west coast of USA (i.e. LA/SF).

    Not many deals for getting all the way to NY so you might be left with booking the LA/SF-NY leg separately

    End of June/ Start of July is school holidays time! Flights are never cheap then. Just an FYI, we went in low season (oct/nov) with Qantas for $1299 return BNE->NY

    How long is a piece of string.

    Where are you flying from? That impacts any fare deal. Especially as this is Oz school holiday time, but each State starts at a different time

    Vic & QLD start on 24 June SA July 8th Other states seem to be July1st

    Plus how long are you staying? Again this impacts fares

    If fares are lower than $1K then I would buy now, Over $1.2K I might wait.

    e.g.

    Syd - Lax Jun 19- Jul 3rd
    AirNz via AKL = $1240

    Syd - LAX Jun 17th - Jul 1
    AirNz via akl = $1016

      I can fly from Sydney or Melbourne or Brisbane to LAX.
      my dates are 23rd June to July 15th.

      Yeah I was hoping for sub $1k but I'm guessing there will be some flash sales as they look to fill capacity in a few months.

          hey that sounds great.
          I'm looking now and the cheapest Virgin flights from Brisbane to LAX return on the 23rd june to 15th july are like $2000. Did you do brisbane to LAX or melb/sydney? Can't seem to get anything near that from any cities.

          i found them on skyscanner, went to book and they said they were no longer available. price went up to 1470 lol.

    FYI I visited the US last year in July. I booked my flights mid/late February and got tickets from Adelaide to Sydney and return for $1300 return with some internal flights in the US..

    So it is possible to wait. But its a gamble.

    Thanks for your input everyone.

    I ended up getting Adelaide to LAX return from late June to mid July for $1240 with Virgin on BYOjet
    Figured it wasn't bad since it's all through Virgin and that makes it a $1000 flight from Sydney to LAX and $120 each way with Virgin to get to/from Sydney.

    Good tip on BYOjet is to pay with paypal and link your credit card (if you want points but don't want the ridiculous $47 '3rd party referral fee' of 1.9% on the credit card.
