Good wireless keyboard. Back lit, some gaming...

Hi there.
Need a wireless keyboard for my son and have no clue. Would spend about 100-120 dollars I guess. Obviously prefer less, but one something reliable.

He has a mechanical one and it's great, but the usb connection on the back of the keyboard is stuffed, due to the connection constantly being bumped and it drops the connection occasionally, which is not good in the middle of a game.

He'd like it back lit as if possible.
He's not a competitive gamer, but does play ARK, 7 Days To Die, some tower defense stuff and also types a lot of documents (loves the mechanical for that).

I think that's everything he said.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think a back lit, wireless, mechanical keyboard exists. At least not in that price range. Better off forgetting about the wireless aspect and get your son to be more careful. Any real need to be wireless?

  • I wouldn't look beyond logitech. The important thing to consider is the battery life. For example my apple keyboard battery life pales in comparison to my logitech's (Read 3 weeks vs 6 months). There are a lot of options within your budget in this page.

Even the cheaper ones should be good enough for a casual gamer. Keyboard performance is not as important as mouse performance while gaming.

In that pricepoint you won't find a decent mechanical, backlit, wireless keyboard unless it's a dodgy brand (and you don't want a dodgy brand mechanical keyboard unless you want a very frustrated son).

Your best bet would be the Filco Majestouch Convertible 2 which is bluetooth wireless and mechanical. But it's going to set you back closer to $300 and you won't get backlighting.

The other option would be the Rapoo KX 60 which is mechanical, backlit and wireless for under $100 however it's not a fullsize keyboard and reviews say it's very squished and you're not going to be getting the quality of the better brands (you get what you pay for with keyboards).

If you're after bang for your buck you're way better getting a solid mechanical KB brand with a wire (eg the Ducky Shine 5) - I'm pretty sure I could drop a brick on my Ducky KB and it wouldn't miss a beat, and the USB cords/connections on them are built to last.

  • Thanks for the replies everyone.
Yeah, he does need to be more careful but he has a cramped set up and has the keyboard on his lap as he sits in a recliner.
He gets home from his late shifts after school and falls asleep with it on his lap and that USB connection can get a few knocks. It also gets knocked when it gets put on the side table the monitor sits on.

I'm wanting to get it as a surprise gift, so that's why I'm asking.
If it's not mechanical or doesn't have back lighting, so be it, but yeah no chord or one that has a rock solid connection and not a USB would be the way to go.

Thanks guys. Bloody hard when trying to buy something you have little experience with.
