What's The Cheapest/Best Value Antioxidant Anti-Aging Cream Available?

I've heard sunscreen is not enough, but it seems hard to find an affordable cream, or a good value one.

What is the going rate for snake oil?

  • +1

waste of money!!! use normal moisturiser, like sorbolene.

No such thing as 'anti-aging', words on beauty/skincare products are 90% marketing words.

The best thing you can do for your skin is use a 30+ sunscreen for the day and a decent moisturizer at home. As for moisturizer, there's different textures (eg. creams (thick), lotions, gels. ) for different skin types (eg. oily, dry, sensitive etc), some work and feel better for you skin and may work better with other products like makeup.

    • My face still produces acne occasionally, but my face does feel dry. Is there a good brand of moisturizer that is runny enough to not clog my pores and worsen acne?

      • +1

I'm a little dry and oily at the same time (weird) and I find cream types to be too heavy and thick, almost like a mask. I've been using water gel types like Nivea Aqua sensation (its more like a mix between water gel and lotion so its pretty light), plus La Roche Posay Baume B5 cream for drier spots and I've found improvement. If your face feels dehydrated, you could try Hydraluron Jelly under the moisturiser, or mix a bit of it in with your moisturiser or even sunscreen.

Priceline often have opened samples for you to try, you could check it out, get a feel of what kind of texture you prefer first. Hope that helps.

      • ALDI brand works for me

  • +3

    Aldi -Shhhh, it's a secret.

  • If there is a magic potion Ms Gina would have it.

Sorbolene & Glycerine moisturiser can be bought for few bucks per litre.

  • Exercise

  • Come on! Try that.

  • Lamar or Cult51…not.

    Wash face with bicarb.

    • but but but…. it's 3D… so it must be worth the $5000 per litre.

    • Does it work well? I might have a try, what's the process?

      • +1

Google "bicarb face scrub" where you will find lots of articles. It makes the skin feels smooth. Learn that from the nurse who works for a cosmetic surgeon,

        • +1

Ah, just seen this, thank you very much indeed!

        • +1

I did just now, thanks for that.

Most search hits were pro-bicarb for the skin, but one stood out strongly anti — Reddit: Please do not use baking soda on your skin

It talked about caring for your skin barrier, and how too acid or alkaline a substance seriously stuffs with it.

          Does that sound reasonable?

        • +1

@Member 0230: spotted that too but it's always been the debate of bicarb or not, so one needs to make your own decision. Cosmeticeutical sells you cream for $300+ when $3 is available.
You can bicarb many things which actually work eg read this and use as natural remedies.
          Tried:
          dip some to brush teeth
drink water with a small tea spoon of bicarb
          deodorant on smelly shoes.
keep a little bit in container in glove box for minor cut or clean stain on the shirt.
All works wonderfully as books say, but I am not persistent enough as busy.
Just find hard to keep an opened box of bicarb fresh all the time, I have tried to seperate them into different containers and make sure I don't mix the one for the face with the one to wash the dishes.
Let me know if someone have any tips.

        • @eatwell365: I must say I've tried quite a few of those as well: toothpaste supp/alternative, deo, and all-around household cleaner that replaced many of our chemicals.

Yes, keen to hear if others have been using it on their face consistently and long-teen with good results.

Paula Begoun and Beautypedia revolutionised my life a few years ago. It's nonsense that all you need is sorbolene or glycerine to prevent aging, although I would say 99% of the beauty industry is also nonsense. Paula explains it all. As for preventative aging, spf, antioxidant serum, and an aha or bha is a good place to start. I love Paula's choice antioxidant serum, but I know she recommends Olay regenerist as her drug store alternative. Beautypedia critically analyses all the makeup and cosmetics to see which ones actually measure up - go to the website and you'll see her cheap store bought reccommendations - downside is that it's a lot of American brands, but we have a few.
Ps. Having dry and oily skin is a normal skin type, and having acne well into adulthood is also common - but both are treatable :P

Witch hazel is amazing. It will rid you of all wrinkles after just a few months. It's natural, cheap and smells great! Check out some reviews on the net, mind blowing.

    • Yes, it is great. Used that after bicarb face wash. Think it was only $7-$10 a bottle. It is like a face toner.

  • Been using the WH everyday for 2 months, wrinkles are going away. This bcarb will be a welcome addition.

I feel like we have OzBargained wrinkles…

  • Ali G has a cheap solution which he discusses with the founder of 'the body shop' (forward to about 4:40)

I use bio oil on my face, it really does keep your skin looking great. I have also used the palmers face oil from Priceline or Coles. This also works really well and doesn't cost much. Good diet and drinking lots of water will keep your skin great.

  • repco has 5w30 on sale at the moment

works wonders, not great smelling, leaves a bit of a residue - but CHEAP !

    • how do you use this?
put on daily or when shifting gear up.

      • as you said,,,,when changing your gear

  • +1

I'm a huge fan of Palmers face oil. Use it sparingly and put a few drops on wet hands to make it spread easily.
The best things for anti ageing are plenty of water and using suncreen

Wow I could go on and on and on about skincare. I've been around it my whole life.

Firstly your question is flawed. If you are asking what can make you look YOUNGER - nothing. You cannot look YOUNGER you can just stop yourself from looking older than your real age.
Good skin hinders premature ageing but you will still very look your age, just a preserved version of it.
A 60 year old with great skin will look 60 just with great skin. A 60 year old with bad skin will look 60 (or older) with bad skin.

How old are you? I've done SO MUCH research on this (I'm a model so a huge chunk of my income depends on me desperately trying to look like a damn child).
    What is your gender?
What is your lifestyle - smoking, work inside/outside etc?

  • Sounds awesome Beethoven. Can you share what you've discovered? Do you have any good DIY recipes for serums or anything good? :P

I'm on my phone so can't type too much.

It all depends on the person which is why you do need specifics.

there are so many factors when it comes to ageing and skin is only one. Your fat distribution changes too which is what determines youth.
I'm in my early-mid 20s and pass as a teenager because I have a round face.

Your weight. DO NOT gain weight. Pick a weight and stick to it. If you were 56kgs at 25 be 56kgs at 35, 45 etc. sure maybe go to 58-60 max in your 40s but don't just let yourself go. Ever.

There are a lot of sacrifices to looking young and you have to decide if it's worth it. I find it's something people ask then decide they aren't willing to make the sacrifices then whine. Like being thin. I don't look like a teenager because I go out eating Chinese food and wine every weekend or go to the beach or stay up going to midnight movies or parties. That's means i decided the pleasure I gain from passing as much Younger > from those memories. that said, it is very isolating.
Going out with a boyfriend and only eating 3 bites of pasta for dinner because of certain foods. Things like that. He gets annoyed, who wants to go to an amazing Italian restaurant where your girlfriend doesn't drink and eats 3 bites? I sure wouldn't. Then you get the "I'm not with you because you look 19."

      Skin
      - silk pillowcase
      - sleep on your back
      - daily spf 50
      - no alcohol
      - no smoking
      - sleep. 8 hours minimum.
      - positive thoughts - meditate daily. Marriage ages you.
      - don't get pregnant - a big one.
      - no sun. Subscreen protects but the best is actually avoiding the sun. Stay inside.
      - red meat
      - animal products. Vegans will age better if they do the other factors holding all other variables constant.
      - water
      - delicate exercise. Sweating can age you.

The list goes on and becomes very specific but like I said its extreme but I make the sacrifices because it's worth it to me.

      • Wow. That is a lot Beethoven. I hear lasers do a lot these days. If your job depends on it, I'd think about that too. Thanks for sharing :P

        • Anytime. PM me if you want/need any specifics.

          Laser for what? Skin issues?

        • 2 cents -
          1. make sure the laser operator has laser safety training - very strict in QLD but do not think compulsory in NSW. Injuries reported in the past.
          2. skin laser - result varies. a lot to do with marketing and placebo effect.

        • @Beethoven: Hi, sorry comment is so late. Laser definitely has good things going for it. Once you accept that a 60 yr old person won't look 20, and nothing ever (besides Botox) won't Fully erase deep wrinkles, there's a lot you can do.
There are lasers that are used to treat the appearance of wrinkles, sun damaged skin, acne scars, also to treat acne- as well as to boost the production of collegen which is useful for older skin.
If you were into keeping your skin young, I'd have a look. But like any good sceptic do your research and best to get advice from dermatologists who are doctors.
          This is a good start.

      • +1'd but "I'm on my phone so can't type too much."

  • A friend who is a nurse suggested the following. Best thing you can do for your skin and premature aging is to stay out of the sun as much as possible, do not smoke, get enough sleep, sleep with a soft pillow, minimise your stress levels and moisturise daily with, for example, QV cream.

Personally, anything I say would be no help at all and she tells me that all the time.

    • I don't understand the soft pillow bit….

      • Apparently sleeping on your face or part of your face repeatedly causes wrinkles, especially with a firm pillow. With a soft pillow less chance of wrinkly face.

Only repeating what I have ben told, I have no idea :-)

  • Search the internet for the main ingredients in anti aging cream, then buy the no-name brand with the same ingredients on the bottle…. from the chemist or priceline or something.

  • HGH or peptides work well lol

  • The best way to prevent ageing is to choose your parents carefully.
Ladies, you know your skin will mainly look like your mother's.
    Gentlemen, get a life.
Otherwise, sunscreen will help if you start early enough, but take care of the Vitamin D deficiency.

Genetics only plays a part. Like 10%. Lifestyle factors are the biggest.
