  • this or i5 750?

    • this is much better

      • +4

agreed but it is on a more expensive platform with the 1366 socket and using the X58 chip, instead of the cheaper 1156 socket and p55 chip
but this is so cheap it pretty much covers teh cost difference in the two platforms, and is well damn worth it

Do you find that when you open several applications your computer starts to lag?

Yes, my operating system is poorly designed and wastes resources.

You wouldn’t settle for anything else second rate in your life

I wish. Have you seen my car, house, etc! ;-)

        lmao!

How does having more cores make my computer more "intelligent"?
Am I gonna have to worry about my computer judging me while I do certain unsavoury acts?

    • +4

your computer already judges you - then blogs about it :P

    • +2

No ACMA will do this courtesy of the government's mandatory ISP filter ;-)

    Can we customise the PC?
    Thanks,

The slowest component on a PC is the OS and the next is the hard disk.

throwing CPU only helps CPU hungry applications not everything!

I do have a i7 930 and my OS still stops every now and then.

PS: Sorry danilochan, the first line of your message just got me started!

I think you have to look at it from a consumer point of view. An "old and slow processor" could be something like a P4 2.8GHz for example. A computer that has a 2.8GHz P4 processor probably also has a slow 250GB hard disk and 512MB of RAM. Opening several applications will probably make the whole system sluggish.

A Core i7 can make the system much faster, not because it's a core i7, but because a newer computer will have much better specs. More RAM, faster HDD or SSD, more powerful video card for Aero, etc.

So his description is technically correct - an i7 processor will make your system more responsive compared to an old processor like a p4, simply because the rest of the computer that comes with it will be more up-to-date. :)

And what if he replaces his old P4 2.8GHz computer with the i7 and retain his other components? (this may mean upgrading the motherboard to accommodate the processor but we are hypothetically speaking here…)

From my point of view, what he is trying to convey is that just having a powerful processor does not necessarily speed up your computer as there are many other factors involved and that not every computer will have the best components. But like you said, generally speaking, a computer with a powerful processor will be accompanied by more efficient parts as well.

      • Yeah as you said "Technically Correct" is true. Processor speed not alone can fix the performance issue. If that is the case we will not be having SSD.

If you want to reap the biggest performance, replace your spinng disk with SSD and see the difference for yourself! You don't need to change the motherboard for that!

        • I just upgraded my Core2 Quad to an i7 930 last week. There is no appreciable difference with general tasks, even under heavier multitasking (I frequently have 60-90 windows open). But when it comes to cpu-intensive tasks, the i7 blows the core2 quad away!

I embraced SSDs a while back and they're simply amazing. I have an old small Fujitsu P1610 laptop with a Core Solo 1.2Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM running W7 happily, simply because it has an SSD. The exact same laptop with a spinning HDD is unbearable with W7 on 1GB. Hopefully we'll see some SSD deals on here one day!

My 3 years old Quad-core 2.4 still works fine

    • hurrah, good for you! :)

  • good deal, but misleading comments…..still give it a +ve cos its $50 cheaper than MSY, and its delivered.

  • My computer slows down due to virus protection running.
I could turn it off and my T7200 on my laptop would run like a i7 930.
But what would I use a computer without virus protection for?

    • +1

Obviously someone's going to shifty sites..
If you go on legit sites like news sites, and banking sites, and don't click obviously dodgy links that lead you to some other website you have no clue about, then you dont need virus protection.

      • Agreed - shifty sites and dodgy emails are the biggest sources of malware.

Good virus protection does not slow down your computer as much as he says either.

  • Heaps cheap compared to MSY

Bought mine like a month ago

  • awesome. my emails can go that much faster. no seriously i7's are the best thing to happen to intel ever since they released C2D. obviously average joe wont buy i7 because they simply buy things off from hardly normal

  • isnt it cheaper to get a 920 and over clock it

im running mine at 4.5ghz :)
calculate 10 million sig figures of pi in 4 mins

    • Can you get a 920 for less than $319.95 delivered?
Did you spend extra money on better cooling?

The 930 is a good overclocker too.

  • +2

Lol, thanks for the good laugh guys, love the comments at the beginning, especially about the wife ^_^

  • What sort of motherboard would this require - with the current mwave free ship offer might get one from there! ;-)

Does this look like the right mobo for a decent price
