Can anyone recommend a laptop for working/studying

Can anyone recommend a cheap and good quality laptop for me?

The budget is $500 (the cheaper the better).

The laptop will be used mainly for working/studying (word, excel, outlook, etc), browsing and watching movies/youtube.

I am looking around 15" and it will be used at home only. I will carry it around (kitchen, bedrooms, etc) but it most likely won't leave the house (so a good battery life is a plus but not very important).

I prefer windows 7 (if not touchscreen) or windows 8 (for touchscreen).

Everything else is optional.

I was looking at i5 laptops but I think i3 might be enough. Ram size, HDD size, DVD, etc is not really important for me.

I am not in a hurry to buy one so can wait until June/July.

I was thinking of getting HP 15-AC184TX 15.6" Intel i5 8GB RAM 1TB HD Laptop $553 (After $25 Off & Cashback)(harveynorman.com.au) or Asus F555UJ-XO044T 15.6" Intel i5 4GB RAM 1TB HD Laptop $572 (After $25 Off)(harveynorman.com.au). But I think it may be an overkill for me? Any thoughts?

  • the deal you mentioned was yesterday's Harvey Norman's '1-day sale' or so it stated in the Daily Telegraph advert. I had a check on their website yesterday afternoon and it seems they may have been willing to extend it to Sunday somehow but those are pretty damn good prices compared to a couple of years ago, i bought my HP Envy 6 for the $700 mark - it's a core i7 3rd gen. processor. those specs look pretty good. Asus and HP are good brands however, Acer is not as great imo.

The i3 on the front page https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/233630 is pretty good and will leave you with change.
